Paul Schneider to Star in Broken Lizard’s THE BABY MAKER; Sienna Miller Reportedly Joins FREAKY DEAKY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 27th, 2011

We have a couple quick casting notes to report.  First up, Paul Schneider (Lars and the Real Girl) will star in Broken Lizard’s new movie The Baby Maker.  While Broken Lizard will star and the troupe’s Jay Chandrasekhar will direct, the script was penned by Ice Age: The Meltdown writers Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow.  Per Variety, “Story follows a married couple who fail to conceive after months of trying, prompting the husband to enlist his friends’ help to rob a Pasadena sperm bank, where he made a deposit as a young man.  All of the Broken Lizard members are expected to co-star, with Kevin Heffernan playing the protag’s crazy best friend, who hooks him up with an Estonian master thief, played by Chandrasekhar. Other Broken Lizard members include Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske.”
Why the sperm bank wouldn’t simply give him back his own seed is beyond me.  I’m also surprised that sperm keeps for that long.  Logistics aside, Schneider is terrific actor and it will be interesting to see him play against the Broken Lizard gang.  Hit the jump for some casting news regarding the adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s Freaky Deaky.

Trailer for THE WHISTLEBLOWER Starring Rachel Weisz

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 27th, 2011 at 8:47 am

The US trailer for The Whistleblower has gone online.  Based on real events, Rachel Weisz stars as a UN peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia who uncovers rampant corruption and a massive cover-up of criminal activity.  The film played the festival circuit last year to positive notices and I’m glad I’ll finally get a chance to see it in the near future.  In addition to Weisz, the impressive cast features David Strathairn, Monica Bellucci, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jason Isaacs, and Vanessa Redgrave.

First Clip from GREEN LANTERN

With the film’s release only a few weeks away, the first clip from Green Lantern has gone online.  The clip was shown on Attack of the Show before an interview with Michael Clarke Duncan who voices Kilowog.  In the clip, we see Kilowog training Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds).  What I really like about this clip is that previously we’ve seen Hal generate swords, chainguns, and a giant fist, but what’s so fantastic about the ring is that it can conjure anything.  Seeing what a seasoned Green Lantern Corps member like Kilowog constructs in this clip is pretty ingenious and raises my excitement for the completed film.

New Picture of Sean Hayes as Larry in the Farrelly Brothers THREE STOOGES Movie

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub   Posted: May 27th, 2011 at 2:54 am

Sean Hayes (Larry) The Three Stooges movie image slice
With filming underway in Atlanta on the Farrelly Brothers Three Stooges movie, the other day we posted our first look at Larry (Sean Hayes) and Moe (Chris Diamantopoulos) on set.  However, we now have a much better look at Hayes as Larry.  If there was anyone who doubted that Hayes looked like Larry, this picture will silence the naysayers.  However, we still don’t know how he’ll play the character, but I’ve always thought Hayes was an underrated actor, and I think he’s going to nail it.
The Three Stooges will be comprised of three 27-minute segments (just like the originals), the first of which see them as children raising all kinds of hell in an orphanage.  Hit the jump for a better picture. http://collider.com/three-stooges-movie-image-sean-hayes-larry/93280/

The first clip from director Alexander Payne’s The Descendants has been released. The film stars George Clooney as a wealthy landowner who tries to re-connect with his daughters. The clip really doesn’t reveal much in the way of plot. In fact, it’s pretty much just Clooney running. But Payne hasn’t directed a film since 2004’s Sideways, so any peek of his next flick, however small, is pretty intriguing.
Clooney stars alongside Beau Bridges, Judy Greer, Robert Forster and Matthew Lillard. The Descendants is set to be released on December 16th. Hit the jump to check out the clip.

Woody Harrelson to Play Haymitch in THE HUNGER GAMES

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 10th, 2011

I guess it’s time for our daily Hunger Games casting story. It now looks like Woody Harrelson will be taking on the coveted role of Haymitch Abernathy, the only tribute from District 12 to ever win a Hunger Games competition who becomes Katniss’ mentor. John C. Reilly was previously being pursued for the role of the alcoholic Abernathy, but it appears that Harrelson will end up with the part. The actor was previously mentioned for a role in the film back in April, and now Heat Vision confirms his involvement.
Gary Ross is directing the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ wildly popular book trilogy. Set for release on March 23rd, 2012, The Hunger Games also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Wes Bentley, Elizabeth Banks and Stanley Tucci.  Hit the jump to read a synopsis. .......... http://collider.com/woody-harrelson-the-hunger-games/90040/

Stanley Tucci to Play Caesar Flickerman in THE HUNGER GAMES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted:May 9th, 2011

Stanley Tucci will play interviewer Caesar Flickerman in Gary Ross’ adaptation of The Hunger Games.  Here’s how the press release describes the role:
Caesar Flickerman is utterly familiar to all the citizens of Panem as the host of the Hunger Games. Known for his outrageous appearance and buoyant personality, his upbeat interviews of the 24 tributes – a boy and a girl from each of the country’s 12 districts – are presented on every television in the nation.  He is famous for turning any conversation around to the positive and finding humor in even the most dire circumstances.
It sounds like Tucci is playing the well-worn smarmy announcer character we’ve seen time and time again.  However, I do take comfort in the fact that a talented actor like Tucci has taken the role and will likely bring something new to it.  Hit the jump for the full press release.  The film also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Wes Bentley, and Elizabeth Banks.  The Hunger Games opens March 23, 2012.

Rachel Weisz in Talks for THE BOURNE LEGACY

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 10th, 2011

Hot off the heels of the news that Rachel Weisz is in talks to join Sam Raimi’s Oz, The Great and Powerful comes word that the actress is also in talks to star in Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy. Legacy is a reboot of sorts for the Bourne franchise, with Jeremy Renner recently landing the lead role. In Legacy, Weisz would play “an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Bourne.”
However, Deadline reports that scheduling conflicts may prevent the actress from joining both films. Apparently Weisz is in “deeper” talks for Bourne than she is with Oz (if there exists an infographic for the levels of “talks” actors are in, I’d very much like to see it). In Oz, Weisz would play the evil witch Theodora, who teams up with Kunis’ character to take over Oz. Raimi is set to go into production on Oz, The Great and Powerful this summer, while The Bourne Legacy is poised to start filming in September. There is a possibility that she could do both films, but nothing’s certain at the moment.

**Nicole Kidman May Star in OUR WILD LIFE **Rachel Weisz to Play Evil Witch in OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL **Casting Call: Adam Brody, William Peterson and Rob Corddry in Talks for SEEKING A FRIEND AT THE END OF THE WORLD; David Boreanaz in OFFICER DOWN **

Nicole Kidman May Star in OUR WILD LIFE

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 3rd, 2011

Nicole Kidman is apparently eyeing the lead role in Our Wild Life. The drama tells the real life story of Dame Daphne Sheldrick, a Kenyan wildlife conservationist best known for her work with elephants. In fact, Sheldrick hand-reared more than 70 elephants and perfected a milk formula used for baby elephants and rhinos. The Wrap reports that though Kidman isn’t officially attached, she’s taken a liking to the script by Jeff Stockwell (Bridge to Terabithia).
Phillip Noyce (Salt) is attached to direct, with Mandalay Pictures producing the film which has a budget north of $50 million. The sure way to acquire financing of that sort would be to lock in an actress of Kidman’s caliber. Production is expected to get underway in September.

Casting Call: Adam Brody, William Peterson and Rob Corddry in Talks for SEEKING A FRIEND AT THE END OF THE WORLD; David Boreanaz in OFFICER DOWN

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 3rd, 2011

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this evening. First up, Adam Brody, William Peterson and Rob Corddry are in talks to join Steve Carell and Keira Knightley in Seeking a Friend at the End of the World. The film, written by and marking the directorial debut of Lorene Scafaria, the writer of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, centers on the events surrounding an asteroid spiraling towards Earth, threatening to end all life. Variety reports that Carell will play a man whose wife leaves him once the news of the world’s end hits, prompting him to seek out his high school sweetheart. Knightley stars as his neighbor and adventure companion.
Additionally, Bones star David Boreanaz is set the indie Officer Down. The flick stars Stephen Dorff, Dominic Purcell (Prison Break) and AnnaLynne McCord (90210), with Brian A. Miller making his directorial debut. Deadline reports that the story centers on a doctor and security guard who live out each other’s daytime lives in their dreams at night. The security guard murders his wife, and then is hit by a car sending him to the hospital where the doctor works. I’d say things get a little interesting from there. Boreanaz will play a rival detective oppposite the cop played by Dorff.

Rachel Weisz to Play Evil Witch in OZ, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL

by Eytan Hirsch    Posted: May 3rd, 2011

The lovely and talented Oscar-winner Rachel Weisz is in talks to play the villainess in Oz, The Great and Powerful, Disney’s prequel to 1939’s classic The Wizard of Oz.  THR declares that Weisz would play Evanora, a wicked and powerful witch who is set on obtaining control over the land of Oz.  Directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), the film will star James Franco as a traveling snake oil salesman and illusionist with a grandiose attitude.  After his hot air balloon is swept up by a tornado, he is taken to an enchanted land where he comes across real witches and eventually becomes the legendary Wizard.
We previously reported that Mila Kunis would be taking on the role of Evanora’s sister, Theodora, a good witch whom Evanora coaxes into turning evil after she is rejected by Franco’s character.  The two then join forces to rule all of Oz, and Theodora ultimately becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.  Yet to be cast is the third sister, Glinda (aka the Good Witch of the North).  After Kunis was cast, Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams, Kate Beckinsale, Keira Knightley and Rebecca Hall were all reportedly on the shortlist for the remaining two sisters.  Now that Weisz is set to play Evanora, there’s a good chance that one of these five ladies will play Glinda.

**Robert De Niro To Star Alongside 50 Cent Again In Freelancers **40 Actresses 40 and Over Killin' It on the Big Screen

Robert De Niro To Star Alongside 50 Cent Again In Freelancers
published: 2011-03-25 23:41:50 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Two days back I posted the trailer for the film Setup and had a pretty simple reaction: who the hell keeps hiring Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson to act in movies? But I should have gone deeper. Setup also happens to star both Bruce Willis and Ryan Phillippe, two still largely respectable actors who really deserve more than being co-stars in a 50 Cent pic. Why do I bring this up? Because Robert De Niro, one of the greatest actors of all time, has just signed up for his second 50 Cent movie.

Deadline reports that the actor once known for films like Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, will star in Freelancers, the first film since Righteous Kill that will see him performing alongside G-Unit's most famous member. Even worse, Forest Whitaker is also in talks to join the cast. Directed by Jessy Terrero, 50 Cent plays a young man who signs up for the NYPD after his father, a former cop, was shot and killed. After graduating, he begins working with his father's former partner (De Niro) and becomes part of a rogue task force.

I've been holding out hope that De Niro's reunion with Scorsese on The Irishman could possibly save his career, but I seriously think that it's just too late. What a shame.

All those in Hollywood who say there are no great roles for women over the age of 40 need to take a look at the work being done, and still coming from, the fantastic, award-winning actresses on our list. And if it's true that there aren't enough great roles to continue keeping these stars employed, the only solution is to write more, because these leading ladies' talents demand them.

Jennifer Aniston
Age: 42
Why she's hot: She seems to take in stride the world's insistence on making her the poster girl for unmarried-and-40-years-old women everywhere, all the while continuing to choose interesting flicks with unexpected co-stars like Adam Sandler and Brooklyn Decker.
Up next: She stars in 'Horrible Bosses,' a comedy co-written by 'Bones' star John Francis Daley and starring a line-up of some of the funniest guys in Hollywood, including Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudekis, as well as Jamie Foxx, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey.

Angela Bassett
Age: 52
Why she's hot: The Oscar nominee splits her time between TV ('ER'), theater (in New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis) and the big screen, where, this summer, she plays villainess Dr. Amanda Waller in the 'Green Lantern' flick.
Up next: She also co-stars with Paula Patton and Loretta Devine in the May wedding comedy 'Jumping the Broom,' and with Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine in the McG-directed action-comedy 'This Means War.'

Annette Bening
Age: 52
Why she's hot: She was just nominated for a Best Actress Oscar (and won a Golden Globe) for her role in the 2010 drama 'The Kids Are All Right,' arguably her finest work ever.
Up next: She stars with Anthony Hopkins and Andy Garcia in the Garcia-directed and co-written drama 'Hemingway & Fuentes,' about the friendship that inspired Ernest Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea,' as well as the Rob Reiner-directed dramedy 'The Third Act,' with Morgan Freeman.

Halle Berry
Age: 44
Why she's hot: The very brief Dec. 2010 release of 'Frankie & Alice' -- in which she plays a multiracial woman with multiple personalities, including one who's racist -- earned the Oscar winner a Golden Globe nomination.
Up next: Her custody battle with ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubrey led her to drop out of the romantic comedy 'New Year's Eve,' but later this year she stars in the shark thriller 'Dark Tide,' with rumored new fling Oliver Martinez.

Sandra Bullock
Age: 46
Why she's hot: Her surprise Oscar win for 'Blind Side' came the day after her Razzie "win" for 'All About Steve,' and was followed by her very public breakup with cheating husband Jesse James. But she endeared herself to celeb watchers with her graceful handling of the scandal and her return to work ...
Up next: ... which includes 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,' a 9/11-themed drama based on Jonathan Safran Foer's novel and co-starring Tom Hanks, John Goodman and James Gandolfini, and 'Gravity,' a sci-fi thriller with George Clooney.

Cate Blanchett
Age: 41
Why she's hot: The Oscar winner can do it all: Historical drama ('Elizabeth: The Golden Age'), comedy ('Hot Fuzz'), animation ('Ponyo'), action-adventure ('Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' and 'Robin Hood') and romantic, whimsical drama ('The Curious Case of Benjamin Button').
Up next: She stars in the April 8 assassination thriller 'Hanna' with Eric Bana and Saoirse Ronan, and will reprise her role as Galadriel in 'The Hobbit.'

Helena Bonham Carter
Age: 44
Why she's hot: Her activities in 2010 included playing the Red Queen in 'Alice in Wonderland,' Bellatrix Lestrange in 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1,' and earning an Oscar nomination as Queen Elizabeth in 'The King's Speech.'
Up next: Bellatrix returns for the July 15 final Potter movie series installment, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.'

Glenn Close
Age: 64
Why she's hot: She traded Oscar nods for back-to-back Emmy wins for her role as ruthless attorney Patty Hewes on FX's 'Damages,' but she returns to the big screen -- or at least, her voice does -- in the April 29 animated sequel 'Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil.'
Up next: 'Damages' returns for a fourth season this summer (on DirecTV), and on the big screen, Close co-wrote, produced and stars in 'Albert Nobbs,' about a 19th century Englishwoman who pretends to be a man so she can support herself as a butler

Jennifer Connelly
Age: 40
Why she's hot: The Oscar winner will be stirring buzz with the upcoming release of 'What's Wrong With Virginia,' the Dustin Lance Black-penned and directed drama about a mentally unstable woman whose affair with a local married Mormon sheriff (Ed Harris) could ruin his family and political aspirations.
Up next: She co-stars with Harris again in the megachurch satire 'Salvation Boulevard' (along with Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear and Marisa Tomei) and is rumored to be co-starring with husband Paul Bettany in an adaptation of Philip Roth's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel 'American Pastoral.'

Courteney Cox
Age: 46
Why she's hot: She's forged a post-'Friends' TV comeback -- and earned a Golden Globe nomination -- with the hit ABC comedy 'Cougar Town,' and now she's headed back to the big screen ...
Up next: ... with the April 15 horror flick sequel 'Scream 4,' which reunited Cox with husband David Arquette and Neve Campbell, plus newbie 'Scream'-sters Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Adam Brody, Rory Culkin, Alison Brie, Anthony Anderson, Kristen Bell, Anna Paquin, Lucy Hale and Shenae Grimes.

Viola Davis
Age: 45
Why she's hot: The Tony winner has been stealing scenes (and racking up an Oscar nomination) in flicks like 'Doubt' with Meryl Streep, as well as 'Eat, Love, Pray,' 'State of Play' and 'It's Kind of a Funny Story.'
Up next: She co-stars with Clive Owen in the David Schwimmer-directed April 1 thriller 'Trust,' the southern drama 'The Help' in August and with the aforementioned Sandra Bullock in next year's 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.'

Judi Dench
Age: 76
Why she's hot: The Oscar winner, currently starring in 'Jane Eyre,' may be in her seventies, but she's showing no signs of slowing down, with an upcoming slate that includes ...
Up next: the Judd Apatow-penned thriller 'Stainless Steel,' an adaptation of the novel 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' with Maggie Smith and Tom Wilkinson, 'My Week With Marilyn' with Michelle Williams, Clint Eastwood's 'J. Edgar,' 'Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' and a return as M in the 23rd James Bond flick.

Tina Fey
Age: 40
Why she's hot: She already rules the small screen, made a splash on the big screen in front of the camera in 'Date Night' and wrote what remains one of the best teen chick flicks ever (and Lindsay Lohan's finest performance) with 'Mean Girls.'
Up next: The comedy 'Mommy & Me,' in which she'll co-star with Meryl Streep, and the comedy 'Mail-Order Groom,' which she's co-producing with Steve Carell.

Jodie Foster
Age: 48
Why she's hot: The Oscar winner has directed her first flick in more than a decade with the controversial, but rave review-drawing May dramedy 'The Beaver,' in which Foster co-stars with old pal and scandal-magnet Mel Gibson.
Up next: She co-stars with Kate Winslet in the Roman Polanski-directed movie adaptation of the play 'Carnage,' with Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley in the sci-fi thriller 'Elysum,' and she's writing and directing an as-yet-untitled sci-fi thriller for 2014.

Salma Hayek
Age: 44
Why she's hot: The Oscar nominee slides effortlessly between comedy, like her hilarious recurring stint on '30 Rock,' and co-starring in the Adam Sandler/Chris Rock/Kevin James comedy 'Grown Ups,' to co-starring in Oliver Stone's upcoming crime drama 'Savages.'
Up next: She re-teams with Kevin James in the James-penned action/comedy 'Here Comes the Boom' and provides the voice of Kitty Softpaws in Antonio Banderas' 'Shrek' animated movie spin-off 'Puss in Boots,' which hits theaters in November.

Diane Keaton
Age: 65
Why she's hot: The Oscar winner is starring in Lawrence Kasdan's upcoming drama 'Darling Companion,' about a woman who loves her dog more than she loves her husband ... and then the husband (Kevin Kline) loses the pooch.
Up next: And in another upcoming relationship drama, Keaton is scheduled to star opposite Ed Harris in 'The Look of Love,' in which she'll play a widow who falls for a man who looks just like her deceased spouse.

Nicole Kidman
Age: 43
Why she's hot: The Oscar winner, who received another nod earlier this year for 'Rabbit Hole' and also starred in the Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston comedy 'Just Go With It,' pairs with Nicolas Cage for the first time in the crime thriller 'Trespass,' directed by Joel Schumacher.
Up next: Kidman also stars with Rachel Weisz in the drama 'The Danish Girl,' a fact-based account of the first person to have a sex-change operation.

Diane Lane
Age: 46
Why she's hot: The Oscar nominee is likely to snag an Emmy nod for 'Cinema Verite,' the April HBO movie -- produced by James Gandolfini -- about the groundbreaking documentary 'An American Family.' The PBS series, often credited with being the first example of reality TV, followed the sometimes painful ups and downs of the real-life Loud family.
Up next: She plays Martha Kent to Kevin Costner's Jonathan Kent in Zack Snyder's 2012 'Superman: Man of Steel' reboot.

Queen Latifah
Age: 41
Why she's hot: The Oscar nominee already starred in the Kevin James/Vince Vaughn dramedy 'The Dilemma' earlier this year, and she'll return to her musical roots with her next project, the comedy 'Joyful Noise,' about warring members of a competitive choir, co-starring Dolly Parton and Kris Kristofferson.
Up next: She also returns as Ellie in the sequel 'Ice Age: Continental Drift,' and is producing and starring in 'Welfare Queen,' a fact-based comedy about the woman who helped usher in welfare reform when she scammed several hundreds of thousands of dollars in welfare payments.

Laura Linney
Age: 47
Why she's hot: She stars in the April dramedy 'Sympathy for Delicious,' the much-awaited directorial debut of her 'You Can Count on Me' co-star Mark Ruffalo. The movie, which also stars Ruffalo, Orlando Bloom and Juliette Lewis, tells the story of a recently-paralyzed DJ who discovers he has the power to heal others, but not himself.
Up next: She's starring in a second season of her Showtime dramedy 'The Big C,' and she stars in the drama 'Morning' with Jeanne Tripplehorn and Leland Orser.

Melissa Leo
Age: 50
Why she's hot: The ecstatic Oscar winner for 'The Fighter' is on the big screen next in Kevin Smith's buzz-stirring thriller 'Red State.'
Up next: She also stars with Robert Duvall in the upcoming golf drama 'Seven Days in Utopia' and the comedy 'Predisposed' with Jesse Eisenberg and Tracy Morgan.

Jane Lynch
Age: 50
Why she's hot: The breakout 'Glee' star and Golden Globe and Emmy winner just returned to her big-screen comedy roots in the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost flick 'Paul.'
Up next: She does voice work in the April animated comedy 'Rio,' and, in September, she's releasing her memoirs, which will include revelations about the drinking problems she's previously touched on in interviews.

Frances McDormand
Age: 53
Why she's hot: She's been MIA from the big screen for a few years, but is back with a full line-up, including the crime thriller 'This Must Be the Place' with Sean Penn.
Up next: She's also in the July sequel 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon'; another sequel, 'Madagascar 3'; and will star in the movie adaptation of Elizabeth Strout's novel 'Olive Kitteridge.'

Helen Mirren
Age: 65
Why she's hot: She follows up starring in the action/comedy 'Red' by starring opposite Russell Brand in the April 8 'Arthur' remake.
Up next: The Oscar winner stars in the British drama 'The Door,' about the relationship between a writer and her housekeeper, and an untitled drama about a woman whose daughter is killed while working as a journalist in the Gaza Strip.

Mo'Nique
Age: 43
Why she's hot: She followed up her 'Precious' Oscar win by hosting her own BET talk show, which she also produces.
Up next: She's rumored to be starring in 'The Nye Incidents,' an adaptation of the graphic novel about a medical examiner who tracks down the killer of alien abductees.

Julianne Moore
Age: 50
Why she's hot: The Oscar nod for 'The Kids Are Alright' went to her co-star, Annette Bening, but she earned her fair share of great reviews for the drama. And she's following it up with another family tale, the July dramedy 'Crazy, Stupid, Love,' with Kevin Bacon, Steve Carell, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and Josh Groban.
Up next: She'll also co-star with Robert De Niro and Paul Dano in 'Another Bullsh*t Night in Suck City,' about a twentysomething Boston man who works in homeless shelters, where he often meets up with his troubled father.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, Kellan Lutz Meet With Tony Gilroy for THE BOURNE LEGACY – Updated

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 24th, 2011

It was about a year ago that Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass moved on from the Bourne franchise, but Universal isn’t ready to part ways with the lucrative franchise.  The studio hired Tony Gilroy, a man with writing credits on the first three Bourne scripts, to write and direct a titled The Bourne Legacy.  Though the title is borrowed from one of the books in the Bourne series, The Bourne Legacy is a standalone project – wholly original story which does not feature the character Jason Bourne.
In the absence of Damon, Universal needs a strapping young man to put on the posters.  The studio has begun the search for the actor to play a new assassin character with a “similar background” to Bourne.  Gilroy has reportedly met with Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, and Kellan Lutz about assuming the mantle.
[Update: Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, and Benjamin Walker have been added to the list of contenders.  Details after the break.]

Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz, and Rebecca Hall Considered to Play Yankee Wives in THE TRADE

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 24th, 2011

The Trade has a lot going for it.  The film promises to reunite Ben Affleck and Matt Damon on screen for the first time in over a decade.  It’s been suggested that The Trade could be Damon’s directorial debut.  And then there’s the premise, based on the true story of former Yankee pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson, who traded wives in 1972.  Sounds like a movie to me!
The filmmakers are reportedly considering Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz, and Rebecca Hall for the film.  The roles in question aren’t specified, but there are obviously two distinct female leads in this picture to lure actresses of this caliber.  However, this casting is dependent on The Trade going into production; if Kekich gets his way, his life story will not be a movie.  Details after the break.
Kekich was never keen on broadcasting his private life.  The double marriage took place in October 1972, but the news didn’t leak to the public until spring of the next year. Kekich effectively dropped off the public radar in an attempt to put the scandal behind him.  A source tells the New York Post:

Jude Law Boards Fernando Meirelles' 360

published: 2011-02-15 21:07:49 Author: Mack Rawden
Production is finally beginning on the long-anticipated Fernando Meirelles drama 360, and the high profile names attached to the picture are only becoming more numerous. Jude Law has now officially joined the cast, adding to the already stellar lineup of Anthony Hopkins, Rachel Weisz, Maria Flor and Karl Markovic. The talent is certainly there. Now it's just up to everyone to execute.

According to 02 Films, preproduction has already begun and principal photography will start March 21st and run through the end of May. The comprehensive story written by Peter Morgan of The Last King Of Scotland fame follows an expansive number of individuals as they make choices that ultimately effect not only their relationships but locations. Seven languages will be used at one point or another and shooting will take place in Paris, Vienna and Bratislava.

It's important for any film to gain critical acclaim, but it's especially important for a film like 360. With a nuanced product and multiple languages, it's going to take positive word of mouth to make the average American fork over his or her money. It worked for Babel; let's see if it'll work for 360.

Watch 6 Minutes Of The Adjustment Bureau

published: 2011-02-15 17:06:42 Author: Josh Tyler
If you’re not interested in seeing The Adjustment Bureau now, maybe you will be after watching these clips. From the trailers you know that the film seems a little bit like Dark City meets Inception, the story of a man (Matt Damon) who attempts to deviate from the path laid out for his life, only to discover that the hand of fate is a very real thing (comprised of guys wearing cool hats) and it isn’t happy about his choices. But these clips hint at something more.

Maybe I’m just reading into this, but a couple of these clips seem to indicate there’s an almost religious element to what’s going on, as if Matt Damon is in a fight against the almighty Jehovah himself. Religious people will find comfort in the idea that there really is someone out there, keeping an eye on them, and non-religious people are sure to cheer for the idea of someone sticking it to that bearded bastard up in the sky. If that’s what’s really going on here. Watch the clips and tell me what you think is up with The Adjustment Bureau in the comments below.

Is D.J. Caruso The Next In Line For The Preacher Director's Chair?

published: 2011-02-14 17:56:27 Author: Eric Eisenberg

Fans of the Garth Ennis/Steve Dillon comic series Preacher have been waiting years to see a movie adaptation, but their wishes have never been fulfilled. The project saw plenty of false stars in 2010, with Sam Mendes, Darren Aronofsky and Joe Carnahan all being linked to the project, but nothing has ever stuck (Mendes is now doing Bond 23, Aronofsky is doing The Wolverine and Carnahan is making The Grey). Now another rumor is putting yet another director in the big chair.
SlashFilm has gotten word from an unnamed source that D.J. Caruso, whose newest film, I Am Number Four, gets released this week, is now in talks to take on Preacher. Adapted by Big Fish and Go screenwriter John August, the series tells the story of an ex-preacher named Jesse Cutter who becomes possessed by a supernatural creature that gives him the power of God. After learning that God has abandoned heaven, Jesse goes on the road searching for him, and is accompanied by his ex-girlfriend and a vampire named Cassidy.

Having read a few of the books, I can't say that I'm too surprised that this project has been stuck in development hell for so long. The stories have some seriously graphic content that some studios would definitely balk at. To that same idea, I'm not sure if Caruso is the right man for the gig. While his early films, like The Salton Sea and Taking Lives have some of those elements, Caruso has
largely been making PG-13, teen-oriented films since 2007. Perhaps he's ready to get back to his roots.
