Lisa Edelstein Not Returning for Season Eight of HOUSE
by Ethan Anderton Posted: May 17th, 2011 at 11:26 am

Last month we found out that Fox had finally renewed House for an eighth season and series stars Robert Sean Leonard and Omar Epps had already signed on to reprise their roles as Wilson and Foreman respectively. Now Deadline has word that Lisa Edelstein, who plays Dr. Cuddy, hospital administrator and on-again-off-again love interest for Hugh Laurie’s Dr. Gregory House, will not be returning for the eighth season. I’ve already said the antics on the show this season were getting a little out of hand, and I was hoping for an end sooner or later, and with a big departure like this, I’m willing to bet next season will be the last. Honestly, I just don’t see where else House can go as a character without rehashing his drug addiction and depression again. Any fans worried about Edelstein’s departure?

A new image from John Hillcoat’s The Wettest County in the World has gone online. The story centers on two brothers (played by Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy) who become bootleggers in the South during Prohibition. Musician/screenwriter Nick Cave wrote the screenplay based on the novel by Matt Bondourant. The outstanding cast also features Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Dane DeHaan, and Jessica Chastain. While I’m still waiting for Hillcoat to deliver a film that will blow me away, I know he has it in him and a script by Cave (who previously wrote Hillcoat’s The Proposition) is a good start. The Weinstein Company is close to picking up the film and if we’re lucky, they’ll distribute it this year to put it in the 2011 Awards race.

Photos from the film have been leaking out over the last couple of months and you can check out the latest one after the jump.

Cameron Crowe Talks Music Documentaries THE UNION and PEARL JAM TWENTY

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 25th, 2011

After having not released a new film in six years, Cameron Crowe is having a very busy year. If all goes according to plan, the writer/director will release not one, but three new movies this year. He’s been working simultaneously on his adaptation of We Bought a Zoo starring Matt Damon (filming just wrapped), the Elton John/Leon Russell documentary The Union (which just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival), and the Pearl Jam documentary Pearl Jam Twenty (set for release this fall).
The director recently discussed working on the three projects and the differences and similarities between his two music documentaries. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

A few set photos from director John Hillcoat’s The Wettest County in the World have hit the web. While the quality isn’t great, we do get a look at stars Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jason Clarke in their 1920’s get-up. We previously saw LaBeouf in the first set photo from the film last month.

A number of images from Woody Allen’s latest film Midnight in Paris have been released. The romantic comedy centers on a man (Owen Wilson) who is in Paris with his wife (Rachel McAdams) but begins going off on his own a midnight to explore the nightlife the city has to offer. The trailer for the film was released last month, and actually shows a bit of promise given that Allen hasn’t really made a worthwhile film in quite some time.
The cast includes Wilson, McAdams, Michael Sheen, Kathy Bates, Carla Bruni, Marion Cotillard, and Adrien Brody. Hit the jump to check out the images. Orlando Bloom and Juliette Lewis Interview SYMPATHY FOR DELICIOUS

In the unusual drama Sympathy for Delicious, actors Orlando Bloom and Juliette Lewis play charismatic frontman The Stain and bassist Ariel, part of a band on the verge of superstardom, whose manager Nina (Laura Linney) is trying to lead them down the path to fame and fortune. When they hold auditions for a DJ to add to their band, they meet Dean O’Dwyer (Christopher Thornton), aka Delicious D, who they discover possesses the otherworldly power to heal people and they decide to incorporate his gift into their live show, with disastrous consequences.
At the film’s press day, co-stars Orlando Bloom and Juliette Lewis talked about the appeal of doing such out-there roles, how they related to and identified with their rock star counterparts, working with Mark Ruffalo on his feature directorial debut, and being a part of such a passion project for screenwriter/star Christopher Thornton. Orlando also talked about his excitement to work with Peter Jackson again, reprising the character of Legolas for The Hobbit, and Juliette talked about her desire to get back out on the road again with her own band, The Licks. First Look at Shia LaBeouf in John Hillcoat’s THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011

While John Hillcoat’s The Proposition and The Road never completely clicked for me, I know he has a great film in him and I’m hoping that great film is The Wettest County in the World. Based off the novel by Matt Bondourant, Wettest County centers on two brothers (played by Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy) who become bootleggers in the American south during Prohibition. Working from a script by Nick Cave (The Proposition), the film has an incredible cast that includes not only LaBeouf and Hardy, but also Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Dane DeHaan, and Jessica Chastain. Oh, and Ellis will also be scoring the film. You need to be excited for this movie.

New Red-Band Trailer for YOUR HIGHNESS
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 23rd, 2011

Universal has released a new red-band trailer for David Gordon Green’s Your Highness. Rather than recite them to you, you should just hit jump and check out the not-safe-for-work trailer even if you are at work. Live dangerously.

First Trailer for THE BIG BANG Starring Antonio Banderas
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 23rd, 2011
The first trailer for The Big Bang has hit the web. Directed by Tony Krantz (Otis), the film stars Antonio Banderas as a private detective who is hired to find a missing stripper. That’s about all the plot I’m able to boil down because, judging from the tilt-heavy trailer, this flick looks to be a bit of a mind-bender in the vein of Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The Big Bang stars Banderas, William Fichtner, James Van Der Beek, Snoop Dogg, Delroy Lindo and Rebecca Mader. Anchor Bay Films is set to release the film on May 13th.

Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE to Premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 23rd, 2011
Director Terrence Malick’s highly anticipated, and long in the works, The Tree of Life is finally being released this May, and now word comes that the film will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier that month. Variety reports that it’s still unclear whether Malick will screen the film in-competition or not, but The Tree of Life will definitely be there. Back in 2010, it looked like the film might screen at that Cannes Film Festival, but the ever-meticulous Malick didn’t feel that the flick was ready just yet.

The Tree of Life stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain and follows a life from childhood in the 1950’s to adulthood in the modern day. If the trailer is any indication, audiences are in for a very characteristically Malick experience (visceral, thought-provoking, etc.). If you missed it, be sure to check out Steve’s interview with Chastain in which she describes the experience of working with an auteur like Malick. The Tree of Life hits theaters on May 27th. The 2011 Cannes Film Festival takes place from May 11th – May 22nd. Hit the jump for the official synopsis.

*Christian Bale to Reunite with MACHINIST Director Brad Anderson for CONCRETE ISLAND **Stanley Tucci and Bill Nighy Join Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT KILLER ***Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce, Mia Wasikowska and Jason Clarke Join THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD

Christian Bale to Reunite with MACHINIST Director Brad Anderson for CONCRETE ISLAND

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 9th, 2011

Director Brad Anderson is looking to reunite with Batman himself, Christian Bale, for his next film outing. In 2004, Bale transformed himself into a small bird for Anderson’s psychological thriller The Machinist. During a recent interview, Anderson announced that he and Bale are looking to team up yet again for his next flick, Concrete Island, which he described thusly:
“The best way to describe it is it’s like an urban Robinson Crusoe story – a guy crashes a car into a highway interchange and is marooned in this weedy lot, injured, and can’t escape and he’s basically trying to survive in the middle of the big urban Metropolis.”
In the interview with Shock Till You Drop, Anderson said they plan to shoot the film when Bale can fit it into his schedule (which, more than likely, will not be this year). Bale is currently filming 13 Flowers of Nanjing with director Zhang Yimou, and will then move on to The Dark Knight Rises, the presumed concluding chapter in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Anderson is getting ready to release Vanishing on 7th Street.

Stanley Tucci and Bill Nighy Join Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT KILLER

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 9th, 2011

Two highly esteemed actors have joined the cast of director Bryan Singer’s (X-Men, X2) fantasy tale Jack the Giant Killer. Stanley Tucci is set to play the villain of the film, Roderick, while Bill Nighy will portray Fallon, the leader of the giants. The film is a darker re-telling of the classic “Jack and the Beanstalk” fairy tale, with Jack going after the princess who has been kidnapped and taken to the giants’ kingdom. No actor is currently attached to play the title role of Jack, but Kick-Ass star has been an early favorite and recently screen tested for the film.
The Wrap reports that Tucci’s character is an advisor to the king in the film and has plans of taking over Clositer. Nighy’s character of Fallon is two-headed, with the other head being played by John Kassir (the voice of the Cryptkeeper in the Tales from the Crypt series). When Steve recently sat down with producer Neal Moritz, he stated that filming on Jack was set to begin in March, so expect more casting news very soon as the production start-date nears.

Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce, Mia Wasikowska and Jason Clarke Join THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 9th, 2011

A quartet of actors are the latest to join director John Hillcoat’s (The Road) adaptation of Matt Bondourant’s gangster saga The Wettest County in the World. Gary Oldman, Guy Pierce, Mia Wasikowska (The Kids are All Right) and Jason Clarke (Public Enemies) are the latest actors to join the project. Shia Labeuof stars in the film which centers on a family of prohibition-era bootleggers. Tom Hardy and Dane Dehaan (True Blood) also star in the film alongside Jessica Chastain (Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life) as Hardy’s love interest. THR reports that Oldman will portray a gangster who enlists Labeuof and his friends has alcohol delivery boys, while Pierce will take on the role of an overtly violent deputy. Wasikowska is set to play Labeuof’s love interest.
When Steve recently sat down with Chastain at Sundance, the actress said The Wettest County is basically a 1930’s gangster film, and they start filming in Atlanta in March. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel.

Casting Call: Orlando Bloom, Imgoen Poots and Kerry Condon Join THE LAUREATE; Dane DeHaan Cast in John Hillcoat’s THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 28th, 2011

A couple casting stories for you today. Orlando Bloom, Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later) and Kerry Condon (The Last Station) have joined the cast of writer/director William Nunez’s feature film debut The Laureate. The film tracks the open love triangle between war poet Robert Graves (Bloom), his artist wife Nancy Nicholson (Condon) and American poet Laura Riding (Poots). Screen Daily (via The Playlist) reports that Bloom will topline the film for Media 8, which plans to look for financiers at the European Film Market next month.
Hit the jump for news on Dane DeHaan joining Shia LaBeuof, Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain in John Hillcoat’s The Wettest County in the World.

Newcomer Dane DeHaan (HBO’s In Treatment, True Blood) is the latest actor to join director John Hillcoat’s (The Road) adaptation of Matt Bondourant’s period thriller The Wettest County in the World. The screenplay from Nick Cave (The Proposition) centers on “a family of Prohibition-era bootleggers, and crimes committed by and against them.” We previously told you that Shia Labeouf and Tom Hardy had joined the cast as the middle and youngest brother, respectively, with Labeouf’s role being the lead in the film. Rising star Jessica Chastain (Terrence Malick’s upcoming Tree of Life) also stars in the film as Hardy’s love interest.
Up and Comers reports (via The Playlist) that DeHaan will play teenage bootlegger Cricket, who is crippled by rickets and is Labeouf’s partner-in-crime. Production is set to get underway on the film next month. Here’s a synopsis of Matt Bondourant’s novel:
Based on the true story of Matt Bondurant’s grandfather and two granduncles, The Wettest County in the World is a gripping tale of brotherhood, greed, and murder. The Bondurant Boys were a notorious gang of roughnecks and moonshiners who ran liquor through Franklin County, Virginia, during Prohibition and in the years after. Forrest, the eldest brother, is fierce, mythically indestructible, and the consummate businessman; Howard, the middle brother, is an ox of a man besieged by the horrors he witnessed in the Great War; and Jack, the youngest, has a taste for luxury and a dream to get out of Franklin. Driven and haunted, these men forge a business, fall in love, and struggle to stay afloat as they watch their family die, their father’s business fail, and the world they know crumble beneath the Depression and drought.
White mule, white lightning, firewater, popskull, wild cat, stump whiskey, or rotgut — whatever you called it, Franklin County was awash in moonshine in the 1920s. When Sherwood Anderson, the journalist and author of Winesburg, Ohio, was covering a story there, he christened it the “wettest county in the world.” In the twilight of his career, Anderson finds himself driving along dusty red roads trying to find the Bondurant brothers, piece together the clues linking them to “The Great Franklin County Moonshine Conspiracy,” and break open the silence that shrouds Franklin County. With director Patrick Lussier’s (My Bloody Valentine) 3D revenge flick Drive Angry 3D getting released February 25, Summit has released a very cool motion poster to help promote the flick. Starring Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, Billy Burke, and David Morse, Drive Angry 3D is about a tough as nails criminal (Cage) who breaks out of Hell on a quest for redemption. Fichtner plays a character simply named “The Accountant”, a mysterious demonic agent sent to retrieve Cage and return him to the fiery depths from which he came.  I did a set visit last year and everything I learned while there tells me this is going to be an extremely fun ride that you’re going to want to take.

First Teaser Poster for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: January 19th, 2011

We’ve been awaiting our first look at X-Men: First Class, and 20th Century Fox has delivered over the past couple days with a flurry of images.  The first (and very photoshopped) cast image left some underwhelmed, but we’ve since updated that post with a few stills of the cast on set that I think lend a better context to the look of the film.
To cap things off (or could there be more?), Fox has released a teaser poster for the superhero film starring Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Rose Byrne as Dr. Moira MacTaggert, January Jones as Emma Frost, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Lucas Till as Havoc, Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, and James McAvoy as Professor X.   Check it out after the jump.
The design is very basic, to the point that I’m surprised we didn’t see this before the stills.  It’s sharp, though.  I like it.

Mia Wasikowska Tries to Fit Both STOKER and THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD on Her Schedule

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: January 19th, 2011

Mia Wasikowska had a great 2010 as the star of the years second highest grosser (Alice in Wonderland) and the top limited release (The Kids Are All Right).  It follows that she’s in for a busy 2011.  According to Variety, Wasikowska is currently circling two projects: Stoker and The Wettest County in the World.
The Australian actress could ostensibly do both films, though negotiations are on hold while her camp tries to work out a schedule with the studios.  Both projects would link her to some interesting talent — Carey Mulligan and Jodie Foster in Stoker, Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy in The Wettest County — so I hope Wasikowska figures out a way to sign on to at least one.  Hit the jump for more info on both films.
Stoker was scripted by actor Wentworth Miller, and landed on the 2010 Black List of Hollywood’s best unproduced screenplays.  Oldboy director Park Chan-wook is in talks to make this his English-language debut.  The logline tags Stoker as “the story of an eccentric teen whose enigmatic and estranged uncle who returns to the family after the death of the girl’s father.”  The estranged uncle is reportedly a very meaty role, though it has not been cast as of this writing.

LaBeouf and Hardy are poised to star as Prohibition-era bootleggers in The Wettest County in the World, an adaptation of a novel by Matt Bondurant.  This is a passion project for John Hillcoat (The Road), who will direct from a script by Nick Cave (The Proposition).  The book’s synopsis:
The Bondurant Boys were a notorious gang of roughnecks and moonshiners who ran liquor through Franklin County, Virginia, during Prohibition and in the years after. Forrest, the eldest brother, is fierce, mythically indestructible, and the consummate businessman; Howard, the middle brother, is an ox of a man besieged by the horrors he witnessed in the Great War; and Jack, the youngest, has a taste for luxury and a dream to get out of Franklin. Wasikowska will next be seen in Jane Eyre, which opens March 11.

Mila Kunis and Adam Scott in Talks to Star in Seth McFarlane’s TED

by Ramses Flores    Posted: December 13th, 2010

Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and Adam Scott (Party Down) are in talks to join Mark Walhberg in Seth McFarlane’s (Family Guy) upcoming directorial debut, Ted.  The R-rated comedy is currently budgeted at $65 million and will star Walhberg as a Boston man (Wahlberg) whose childhood stuffed animal/best friend has come to life and still continues to live with him 25 years later.  McFarlane, who also co-wrote the film, will be voicing and providing the motion capture performance for the swearing, pot smoking, and delinquent teddy bear.
According to HeatVision, Kunis will be playing Walhberg’s girlfriend, who “wants their relationship to move to the next level and finally has enough of him living with his best friend Ted.”  The always great Adam Scott will be playing her boss, who she turns to for comfort.  Kunis can currently be seen in Black Swan.  You can next see Scott reprising his role in Parks and Recreation next month, and 2011 looks like it will hopefully be his breakout year with starring roles in both My Idiot Brother and Friends With Kids.

Neve Campbell in Talks for SINGULARITY; Jessica Chastain Joins THE WETTEST COUNTY

by Jason Barr    Posted: December 13th, 2010

We have a couple of casting tidbits to send your way this afternoon.  First up, Neve Campbell is currently in negotiations to join Singularity alongside confirmed star Josh Hartnett.  Singularity will be directed by two-time Oscar nominee Roland Joffe (The Mission) and will take place in 1778 and 2015 concurrently.  According to THR, Campbell would play Hartnett’s wife in 2015 and would manage to “get stuck in a sunken ship while trying to retrieve a ring.”  The film is set to begin shooting in Australia and India in January.
Next, Jessica Chastain (upcoming The Tree of Life) has agreed to star in the Prohibition-Era-drama The Wettest County.  Chastain joins Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy as confirmed cast members in what will be John Hillcoat’s feature directorial follow-up to 2009’s The Road.  Per THR, Chastain will play Hardy’s love interest, a “a big city woman now living in a small town who at one time was mixed up with gangsters.”  The Wettest County is based on Matt Bondurant’s 2008 novel The Wettest County in the World: A Novel Based on a True Story in which Bondurant tells the story of his siblings and their bootlegging trials/tribulations in a purportedly dry Virginia.  Production on the film is currently aiming for a February 2011 start.

Alan Cumming Joins James Franco, Claire Danes, and Catherine Keener in MALADIES

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 7th, 2010

Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) has signed on to star opposite James Franco, Claire Danes, and Catherine Keener in Maladies.  According to THR, Maladies is the story of “a successful actor who retires at a young age due to what is believed to be a mental illness.” Earlier reports refer to Franco’s character as “a former soap star”;  this role is what initially inspired Franco to guest on General Hospital late last year.
The project is currently filming under the direction of Carter, whom Cumming describes as “the artist that James [Franco] has been collaborating with.” Cumming will next be seen as Sebastian in the Shakespeare adaptation The Tempest, which opens December 10th.

The Wachowskis Will Write and Direct the Modern Robin Hood Tale HOOD; In Talks With Will Smith

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 7th, 2010

Here’s a strong early contender for “Coolest News of December”: Andy and Lana Wachowski will write and direct Hood, a “modern, urban take” on the Robin Hood legend.  Naturally, the details of their approach is under tight lock and key at this early stage, though I know instantly I want to see the flight of the arrow through the Wachowski lens.  Heat Vision reports the siblings have begun the recruiting process, with Will Smith near the top of their wishlist.  (You may recall that Smith was offered the role of Neo in The Matrix, but turned it down to star in Wild Wild West.  This is you chance to rectify that unfortunate choice, Mr. Smith.)
After a few years removed from the public eye following my beloved Speed Racer, The Wachowskis now have a series of projects lined up.  As the siblings develop Hood, they will continue to assemble their Iraqi War Film CN-9.  Likewise, they will produce and perhaps direct Cloud Atlas — starring Tom Hanks, Natalie Portman, and Halle Berry — this summer.

Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy Visit THE WETTEST COUNTY IN THE WORLD With Director John Hillcoat

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 7th, 2010

Shia LaBeouf has long been linked to The Wettest County in the World, a period thriller from director John Hillcoat (The Road).  Of course, so were Amy Adams and Ryan Gosling, but those deals fell through.  However, 24 Frames confirms LaBeouf’s involvement and identifies Tom Hardy (Inception) as his co-star.
The screenplay from Nick Cave (The Proposition) centers on “a family of Prohibition-era bootleggers, and crimes committed by and against them.”  The film is an adaptation of the Matt Bondurant novel of the same name, based on a true story.  Hit the jump for the synopsis.
Boardwalk Empire has certainly whet my appetite for more dramas set in the Prohibition era, and the infinitely charismatic Hardy is a great addition to any cast.  Adams had to drop out of the project in late 2009 due to a severe case of pregnancy that has since subsided.  I can only hope that they get back in touch with her  to see if the schedules now line up.  Seems like a no-brainer, so long as they can keep her fiancĂ© and his darn sperm at a safe distance long enough to film.
Hardy will next be seen in the romantic comedy This Means War and the spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in 2011.  Hardy is set to play the villain in The Dark Knight Rises, rumored to be Dr. Hugo Strange.
LaBeouf will again run among the robots in Transformers: Dark of the Moon on July 1, 2011, and is attached to the John Grisham adaptation The Associate.  He is reportedly “very interested” in playing a young Lee Atwater in Young Republicans, though 24 Frames suggests production on The Wettest County might delay that film.
