New Trailer for THE THREE MUSKETEERS

Transformers 3: Blowin’ Up Chicago arrives on screens tomorrow so the taste for trashy blockbusters is in the air. The good news is that there are more ridiculous action movies on the way after Michael Bay’s latest ode to slow motion explosions. Today a fresh new trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson’s glossy The Three Musketeers update has arrived online in all its overblown glory. It’s not often that you get to see a trailer that proudly claims to be based on “the classic novel from Alexandre Dumas” only to seconds later show flying ships suspended by hot air balloons that I don’t recall being in the book. Fan of the series or not, this is one of those trailers that you kind of have to see in a “you’re not going to believe this shit” kind of way.
Hit jump to check out the trailer. The film stars Logan Lerman, Milla Jovovich, Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Mads Mikkelson, Gabriella Wilde, Juno Temple, Orlando Bloom, and Christoph Waltz.  The Three Musketeers opens October 14th.  http://collider.com/the-three-musketeers-trailer-2/99310/

4 International Character Posters for FRIGHT NIGHT

Four international character banners for Craig Gillespie’s Fright Night remake have gone online.  The film stars Anton Yelchin as a suburban teenager who must combat his sinister new neighbor (Colin Farrell) because said neighbor is a murderous vampire.  The posters feature corny taglines but I’ve heard good things about Marti Noxon’s script and I like the cast (which also includes David Tennant, Imogen Poots, Christopher Mintze-Plasse, and Toni Collette) so I don’t really mind if the advertising is unimpressive.
Hit the jump to check out the posters.  Fright Night opens in 3D on August 19th.

Jeff Bridges Still Attempting to Produce and Star in Adaptation of Lois Lowry’s THE GIVER

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 28th, 2011

Back in 2006, Jeff Bridges and producer Nikki Silver (full disclosure: I briefly worked for Silver in 2005 as a summer intern for her On-Screen Entertainment, but I’m 99% sure she doesn’t remember me at all) came close to adapting Lois Lowry’s Newberry Award-winning young adult novel The Giver.  Fox and Walden Media considered giving a greenlight with House of Sand and Fog director Vadim Perlman at the helm, but in 2007, the rights went over to Warner Bros and the project stalled.  Variety reports that Bridges and Silver have now reclaimed the screen rights and are now attempting to revive the film with Perlman still set to direct.
The book concerns a utopian society where all memories of the past reside with a sage figure known as “The Giver”.  When a 12-year-old boy is selected to be the new Giver, he learns of the hypocrisies and hidden truths of his world.  Bridges originally envisioned that his father Lloyd Bridges would play The Giver, but Lloyd died in 1998 and Bridges now says he feels old enough to play the role himself.  Hit the jump for the novel’s official synopsis.

Two Directors in Talks for "300" Sequel

Posted: June 28th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) has been saying that if Frank Miller wrote a sequel to "300" graphic novel that he would direct a film based on it. Snyder is now hard at work on the "Superman" reboot and Warner Bros has decided to move forward with the "300" follow-up with out him.

Deadline has learned that the film is now called "300: Battle of Artemisia" and the studio has narrowed down its list of potential directors to Noam Murro (Smart People, Die Hard 5) and Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown).

The script is written by Snyder and Kurt Johnstadt (300). The story is about Themistocles and the Battle of Artemisium, which happens during the exact same three days as the Battle of Thermopylae in "300."

Based on the fan-favorite video game franchise, 2006’s Silent Hill was panned by critics and never made a profit from domestic sales. However, reaching nearly $100 million in sales internationally and making Box Office Mojo’s Top 10 video game adaptations was apparently enough to elicit a sequel. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D creeped us out a couple of months ago with some carnival-themed set pieces.
Today we have some new images from the set, ones that take a closer look at some of our favorite characters and monsters. Sharp-eyed viewers among you might be able to spot Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix) looking creepier than I’ve ever seen her before. Bryan Cranston in Talks to Join Ben Affleck’s ARGO

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 28th, 2011

Casting seems to be moving right along for Ben Affleck’s next directorial project Argo. Just yesterday, it was announced that John Goodman and Affleck himself had joined Alan Arkin in the cast, and now Variety reports that Bryan Cranston is in negotiations to take on one of the lead roles. The film tells the true story of how the CIA and the Canadian government teamed up to rescue six U.S. diplomats who had been taken hostage by Iranians in 1979. The CIA’s ruse involved convincing the Iranian government that the diplomats were actually a Hollywood film crew scouting locations.
Cranston will play an Irish CIA agent from Boston who used to be the bodyguard to President Eisenhower. Goodman plays Oscar-winning Planet of the Apes makeup artist John Chambers, Arkin is set to portray a Hollywood producer and O.S.S. veteran, and Affleck is taking on the lead. George Clooney and Grant Heslov are producing. Given the caliber of Affleck’s recent work and the cast he’s assembled so far,  Argo is shaping up to be quite the flick. http://collider.com/bryan-cranston-argo/99368/

Paramount has released the first trailer for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the fourth entry in the spy franchise. The trailer is pretty much everything you want out of a Mission: Impossible movie, and it looks like it could be the best yet. The action looks great without being cheesy or showy, and the cast assembled here is top-notch. Plus, freaking Brad Bird (Ratatouille) is making his live-action directorial debut.
Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames reprise their series roles, joined by Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway, Anil Kapoor, Léa Seydoux, and Vladimir Mashkov. Mission: Impossible III director J.J. Abrams is on board as producer.  Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens on December 16.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: June 28th, 2011

We’ve got a few casting stories for you this evening. First up, Scarlett Johansson is set to star in John Carney’s (Once) music-oriented film Can a Song Save Your Life?. Filming begins in New York next year.
Additionally, Wizards of Waverly Place star Jake T. Austin has landed the role of Huck Finn in Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn. Joel Courtney (Super 8) is in talks to take on the role of Tom Sawyer. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D is currently lensing in Toronto and produced by Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody.

Moss and McDowell join rising star Adelaide Clemens (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Vampire, Mad Max: Fury Road) and Kit Harington (HBO's upcoming series Game of Thrones); and returning Silent Hill residents Radha Mitchell (The Crazies, Surrogates), Sean Bean (HBO's upcoming series Game of Thrones, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: Lightning Thief, Lord of the Rings), and Deborah Kara Unger (Shake Hands with the Devil, 88 Minutes).

**Keanu Reeves to Direct and Play Villain in MAN OF TAI CHI **THE HANGOVER: PART II Trailer from Theaters **Trailer for CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. Starring Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling **Universal Offers Hugh Jackman Lead Role in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

The MPAA Pulls THE HANGOVER: PART II Trailer from Theaters
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 6th, 2011
The MPAA once again proved their incompetence and ineptitude by pulling a trailer they’d previously approved for The Hangover: Part II. JoBlo reports that “Warner Bros. sent an urgent notice to all theater owners notifying them that all copies of the trailer “need to be destroyed” and all current placements, including and especially Source Code, need to be removed immediately.” Warner Bros. plans to release a “new” all audiences trailer attached to Scream 4. That’s right: the studio is releasing an all-audiences trailer attached to an R-rated movie.

Since the MPAA can’t remove or destroy the trailer from the Internet, hit the jump to watch it and discuss what parts you think were objectionable to horrified parents who thought watching Jake Gyllenhaal repeatedly blown to bits was wholesome family entertainment. The Hangover: Part II opens May 26th.

Keanu Reeves to Direct and Play Villain in MAN OF TAI CHI
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 6th, 2011
Keanu Reeves plans to make his directing debut on the kung-fu flick Man of Tai Chi. Reeves also tells MTV that he plans to play the villain in the movie, which would be set in the present day but recall classic kung-fu films. And the film won’t lack for kung-fu fighting:

“There’s 18 fights. We’ve timed it out. It’s about 40 minutes of fighting,” he said. “I want to make a good, solid kung fu movie. Good story, good plot — but let’s get some good kung fu going!”

Hit the jump for more details on the project. Reeves is currently shooting on Carl Rinsch’s 47 Ronin, which is due out in 3D on November 21, 2012 and centers on a group of former samurai avenging the murder of their lord.
Reeves says that Man of Tai Chi is set as a bilingual production:

“We want to do it in Chinese and English, do it as kind of a co-production with CFG perhaps, which is a Chinese film group, kind of a studio. It’s tricky.”

The “tricky” part most likely refers to not only to the international nature of the project, but the notorious Chinese censors who will let Reeves know what he can and can’t put in his movie.

Trailer for CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. Starring Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 6th, 2011

crazy-stupid-love-movie-image-slice-02
Warner Bros. has released a trailer for the upcoming dramedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. and it looks surprisingly charming.  The film stars Steve Carell as a man struggling with his divorce and finding guidance from a ladies man played by Ryan Gosling. The strong cast also boasts Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei, and Kevin Bacon.  Crazy, Stupid, Love. looks like it’s going to have a tricky balancing act with making the humor not too broad and the drama not to schmaltzy, but I’m betting that I Love You Phillip Morris directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa can pull it off.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Crazy, Stupid, Love. opens July 29th.

Universal Offers Hugh Jackman Lead Role in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 6th, 2011

Universal has fallen behind in their race with Relativity to get a Snow White movie into development.  Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsmans was dealt a blow when Viggo Mortensen passed on the project, which stars Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Charlize Theron as the evil queen.  Now it looks like the studio is hoping to make up the difference in star power.  Deadline reports that Universal has offered Hugh Jackman the role of the Huntsman in the Rupert Sanders-directed re-imagining of the classic fairy tale.  Jackman was supposed to be at work on The Wolverine, but his schedule has opened up since director Darren Aronofsky left the project and shooting in Japan—the setting for the sequel—became untenable in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake.  Of course, Jackman is involved as a producer on The Wolverine and is actively seeking a new director, with names like David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) and Duncan Jones (Source Code) being mentioned as possible replacements.
Hit the jump for more on both Snow White projects.

Drew Barrymore to Helm Romantic Comedy HOW TO BE SINGLE
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 15th, 2011
Actress/producer/director Drew Barrymore is poised to helm her second feature film with an adaptation of Liz Tuccillo’s novel How to Be Single. The New Line romantic comedy follows the “love lives and break-ups of a group of New Yorkers over the span of ten years.” THR reports that Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn (Valentine’s Day) will script the adaptation.

This marks a reunion of sorts for the team that put together last year’s He’s Just Not That Into You, with Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen producing, and the screenwriting team of Silverstein and Kohn once again writing the adaptation. Barrymore made her directorial debut with 2009’s Whip It starring Ellen Page and Kristin Wiig, which was met with rather warm critical praise. Director Paul Feig Developing a Comedy for Jon Hamm
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 15th, 2011
I hate Jon Hamm. He’s devastatingly handsome, a fantastic dramatic actor, and — as those who have seen/heard Hamm on SNL, 30 Rock, or Doug Benson’s I Love Movies podcast can attest — a very funny man. What a jerk. Yet director Paul Feig, who worked with Hamm on the upcoming wedding comedy Bridesmaids, finds these qualities endearing. A working cut of Bridemsaids just premiered at SXSW (to positive reception), where Feig revealed to 24 Frames he is working on a new project to capitalize on Hamm’s comic gifts:

“[Hamm] is such a comedy nerd. He will quote lines from Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy. You’re quoting something even I can’t quote! He’s always wanted to do comedy. One of the next things I’m developing a project for him to star in. I think he’s so funny. He’s like Cary Grant to me.”

As the creator of Freaks and Geeks and frequent episodic director of Arrested Development and The Office, Feig too is overflowing with comic credibility. Feig even directed a season one episode of Mad Men, to prove that Hamm isn’t the only one who goes both ways. We don’t know the logline or even the development stage of the project — but based on personnel alone, I’m all in. Bridesmaids opens May 13.

"30 Days of Night" Director in Talks for "Daredevil 2"
Posted: March 16th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

David Slade (Twilight Saga: Eclipse, 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy) is in talks to direct 20th Century Fox's upcoming "Daredevil" movie, which will pick up where Ben Affleck's 2003 film left off. Affleck is not involved with the new movie.

THR says that the studio has yet to hire a writer, but we previously reported that David Scarpa (The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Last Castle) has been in negotiations to continue the franchise.

Sources say the new story line will be the adaptation of Frank Miller's "Born Again" comic series, which had the Kingpin learn the identity of the superhero and begin to systematically destroy his life.

"Scream 5" is Already in the Works
Posted: March 16th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

STYD is reporting that Dimension Films is searching for writers to pen their fifth "Scream" installment, despite that the fourth film has yet to hit theaters. This confirms that the studio is interested in developing an entire new trilogy.

When "Scream 4" was announced, Kevin Williamson (Scream, Scream 2) was writing the second trilogy, but was recently replaced by Ehren Kruger (Scream 3). Since Dimension is looking for new writers, it looks like neither Williamson or Kruger will be back.

Craven recently commented on the studio replacing Williamson. He said: "In some ways it's a Wes Craven film, and in way it's not entirely, because it's not a script I have control of. It's ultimately controlled by what the studio wants in the script. My job is much more bringing whatever experience and expertise and creativity I can. Look, there was a bumpy period when things shifted over from Kevin to Ehren. I signed up to do a script by Kevin and unfortunately that didn’t go all the way through the shooting. But it certainly is Kevin's script and concept and ideas and themes."

He added that if the studio wants him to direct the sixth film, he'll would be willing to do it.

Ben Stiller Says "Zoolander 2" is Already Filming
Posted: March 16th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Fans have been waiting for a "Zoolander" sequel for years, but Paramount Pictures never felt comfortable investing in a follow-up to a movie that never became a major hit. But then Justin Theroux (Iron Man 2, Tropic Thunder) wrote a script for "Zoolander 2" and things started moving forward.

Now in an interview with Closer magazine, Ben Stiller has revealed that the sequel is already in production. "We're filming the 'Zoolander' sequel at the moment," he said. "Derek is going to be back bigger and better than before - no catwalk is safe!"

Stiller added that Owen Wilson will also return to reprise his role. "It's ten years later and most of it is set in Europe," he explained. "I don't want to give away too much, but it's basically Derek and Hansel ten years later."

Mark Wahlberg is Now Working on "The Fighter" Sequel
Posted: March 15th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Both Melissa Leo and Christian Bale won Oscars for their performances in "The Fighter," but the film took years to get going, mostly because financiers didn't believe it could become a success.

Now that the film has grossed $118 million on a $25 million budget, Mark Wahlberg has been trying to convince everyone that it's a good idea to make a sequel.

He said: "I got bit by the bug, and now I’m trying to plant the idea in everyone's head that we should do — not five or six [installments] like 'Rocky' — but one more because the big thing that Micky Ward was famous for was his three epic battles with Arturo Gatti. So we're talking about possibly taking one more run at it."

Wahlberg never had trouble getting actors attached to "The Fighter," and doesn't believe he's have trouble this time either. "Everybody had such an amazing experience making the movie that I can't imagine they wouldn't want to go back," he explained. "But it's still kind of in the early stages."

Mike Figgis to Direct SECONDS OF HAPPINESS; Christina Hendricks, Julia Stiles, and Matt Dillon Join Cast
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 15th, 2011
Director Mike Figgis (Leaving Las Vegas) has stepped in to replace Neil LaBute in an adaptation of LaBute’s collection of short stories, Seconds of Happiness. The frame of the narrative takes place on an airplane and examines the interconnecting lives of various passengers through vignettes. Clearly, this will be just like Lost. Deadline also reports that Brendan Fraser and Kristen Scott Thomas will be joined by Christina Hendricks, Julia Stiles, and Matt Dillon. Hendricks will play a woman who catches her husband (Fraser) in a “compromising position.” Because I’ve never read LaBute’s book but have seen every episode of Lost, I imagine Fraser’s position has something to do with pushing a button every 108 minutes. LaBute is still on board to produce and shooting is expected to begin this summer.

Hendricks recently signed on to star in the ensemble comedy I Don’t Know How She Does It while Dillon is attached to co-star in Roman Polanski’s God of Carnage and Matthew Weiner’s You Are Here. Stiles recently co-starred on Showtime’s Dexter. Hit the jump for the synopsis of Seconds of Pleasure.

SILENT HILL Stars Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger Return for SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D; New Image Released
by Dave Trumbore Posted: March 15th, 2011
Five years ago, the original adaptation of the atmospheric, survival-horror videogame Silent Hill hit theaters with less than blockbusting results. However, since people tend to love multiple sequels to these games-turned-movies (see the Resident Evil series), it’s no surprise that Silent Hill: Revelation 3D has already started filming. Alongside up-and-comers Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington, the sequel will see the return of Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger, all of whom played characters who managed to survive to the end of Silent Hill. Here’s the synopsis:

For years, Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

Netflix Negotiating Deal to Distribute HOUSE OF CARDS Starring Kevin Spacey; David Fincher to Direct Pilot
by Jason Barr Posted: March 15th, 2011
In what could go down as a watershed moment in the history of television distribution, Netflix is in ongoing negotiations to distribute Media Rights Capital’s drama series House of Cards. Starring Kevin Spacey (who also acts as an executive producer), the series’ pilot will be directed by David Fincher (The Social Network) who is an exec. producer on the show as well. Per Deadline, Netflix outbid other potential suitors such as HBO and AMC by offering the series an unheard of two season (26 episode) commitment.

As that report points out, when taking into consideration House of Cards‘ hefty per episode budget of $4-$6 million as well as the marketing efforts involved in launching a series of its magnitude, Netflix is believed to have committed over $100 million to what would it be its first delve into the original programming market. For more on the deal and the series itself, hit the jump.

John Cusack To Star In Screwball Comedy Dictablanda

published: 2011-03-07 22:09:34 Author: Eric Eisenberg
John Cusack doesn't always make the greatest movies in the world, but the guy is so incredibly likable that it's even easy to sit through some of the worse ones (*cough*2012*cough*) . That in mind, when Cusack gets something great to work with - like Grosse Pointe Blank or High Fidelity - it becomes something truly special. Dictablanda sounds like it could fall into the latter category.

Variety has learned that Cusack has signed on to star in the aforementioned film (which translates from Spanish into "Soft Dictator") that is described as "a screwball comedy of errors." Directed by Alejandro Agresti and based on a script by Agresti, Cusack, Kevin Morris and Paul Hipp, the actor plays a man caught up in an international situation. Hipp, who previously starred with Cusack in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil will co-star. Sold with the tagline "People don't die, they get killed" the film is set to go into production later this month in Argentina.

I truly love a well-made screwball comedy, and I must say that Cusack getting a co-writing credit instills great hope (he co-wrote both classic Cusack films that I mentioned above). Let's hope this is one to look out for come next year.

Malin Akerman And Jim Sturgess Will Go For Romance In Wildwood Inn

published: 2011-03-07 16:37:48 Author: Katey Rich
Malin Akerman and Jim Sturgess, both actors known primarily for being attractive more than their actual talent, were in two movies recently in theaters that showed off their genuine acting chops. Akerman currently stars in the fluffy comedy happythankyoumoreplease, showing off surprising depth in an ensemble cast that's mostly pretty shallow, and Sturgess starred in Peter Weir's epic The Way Back, leading with quiet force a cast that included Ed Harris, Colin Farrell and Saoirse Ronan-- no easy feat. In the last few months Akerman and Sturgess have proved that they're far more talented than we might have given them credit for previously, and now the two will be starring together in a film to hopefully prove it again.

According to Bleeding Cool, the two will enjoy some unlikely romance in Wildwood Inn, which will be the directorial debut of actor Christopher McDonald (known as Shooter McGavin Happy Gilmore among many, many other screen roles). The story takes on the somewhat preposterous plot of two couples visiting the same vacation home at different times, learning about each other through the guest book in which everyone writes notes about how much they loved the place, and eventually falling in love with the other partners in the couple. It sounds complicated ,but then again The Lake House-- which involved time travel-- was a hit, so who am I to judge.

No word on who the other halves of the couple will be, or even if Akerman and Sturgess will play an unhappy pair or will fall in love themselves. But for all the people who may doubt the two of them, I'll be looking forward to what they might bring to the screen together.

Producers Share Some Details About The New Blade Runner Film

published: 2011-03-07 06:42:07 Author: Katey Rich
When the news hit last week that another movie in the Blade Runner was very close to becoming a reality, there was both a lot of groans and excitement among the chattering nerd crowd. With the producers claiming no intention of remaking Ridley Scott's film, just expanding the massive sci-fi universe the movie was set in, it seemed possible they could really take off on the ideas of the first one and make it even bigger; it also seemed possible they could ruin the coolness of replicants and pleasure models forever.

Now io9 has caught up with producers Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson and Bud Yorkin-- among the only people formally attached to the project, which Alcon Entertainment is financing-- and they're making even more promises about how they won't ruin Blade Runner. While Kosove won't talk specifically about whether or not they've reached out to Ridley Scott, he promises that the director's "blessing to what we're doing is very important to Alcon. It's important to Bud [Yorkin], and certainly we have the greatest degree of respect to him as a filmmaker. He's one of the greatest living directors and one of the greatest directors of all time. So of course he's very important."

The trio wasn't revealing whether or nor they were planning a prequel or a sequel, and with no script in place it seems that they might not actually know; they did promise that replicants will be part of the story, and even went along with speculation that they could make a great prequel by showing the replicant uprising that preceded the first film. And they also name-dropped one of the most successful directors Alcon Entertainment has worked with, Christopher Nolan, in talking about what they want to make of the film:

"To be clear, we cannot remake Blade Runner. As a legal matter, we have not bought the remake rights we have no interest in remaking it we can only do prequels or sequels. But I think the methodology that Chris Nolan brought to Batman is precisely what we aspire to whomever the filmmaker is, whether Ridley comes back and joins us or it's someone else. It's precisely what we aspire to with Blade Runner, that's the template for us."

Note that they're not suggesting they'll bring in Nolan to direct the film-- he's plenty busy with his own stuff anyway-- but just that they're trying to mimic his skill and style. You can read a lot more of what the producers had to say about io9, and decide for yourself if it's encouraging. Something about their enthusiasm strikes me as genuine, and for the first time, I'm wondering if this prequel/sequel idea might work out well after all.
