I can hardly wait to see
The Beaver, but it looks like I’ll have to. This bizarre Mel Gibson movie
will premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in early March, and was originally scheduled for limited release March 23 followed by wide release starting April 8. The SXSW premiere remains intact, but Summit Entertainment has delayed the limited release until May 6, with plans to open
The Beaver wide May 20.
According to
THR, there are two primary reasons for the delay. Director/star Jodie Foster is shooting Roman Polanski’s
God of Carnage until mid-March, and the new release date frees her up to work the promotional circuit. Secondly, the studio hopes to capitalize on two months worth of good buzz from SXSW. Hit the jump to read the official synopsis for
The Beaver, which stars Anton Yelchin (
Star Trek) and Jennifer Lawrence (
Winter’s Bone) alongside Gibson and Foster.

Lasse Hallström will return to the Swedish cinema after more than two decades to direct
The Hypnotist, an adaptation of the best selling crime novel by Lars Kepler.
The Hypnotist is the first in a series of novels revolving around Detective Joona Linna, which rank just below Stieg Larsson’s
Millennium trilogy (i.e
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels) on the list of Sweden’s most successful crime novels worldwide. Svensk Filmindustri and Sonet Film hope
The Hypnotist will launch a film franchise of similiar stature. According to
THR,
The Hypnotist will shoot this winter for a planned 2012 release.
Hallström recently wrapped production an adaptation
Salmon Fishing in Yemen which stars Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor, and Kristin Scott Thomas. Hit the jump for the official synopsis of Kepler’s
The Hypnotist.

We heard over the weekend that Cobie Smulders (
How I Met Your Mother) was
close to landing the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive director Maria Hill in
The Avengers, intended as
a sidekick of sorts for Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.
Variety confirms that Smulders is wrapping up a deal with Marvel to appear as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in up to nine films. The character’s name isn’t specified, but the bio — “Character would work closely with Jackson’s Nick Fury, and eventually becomes the head of the espionage and law enforcement group” — sounds very similar to that of Ms. Hill.
I love Smulders on HIMYM — partly because Cobie Smulders is an awesome name, but mostly because of her endless charisma. I don’t know how big the role will actually be, but I’m excited to see Smulders in a film of this size. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner star in The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon and scheduled for release on May 4, 2012. Hit the jump for a brief character bio on Maria Hill.
