Bradley Cooper Joins Ryan Gosling in THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 1st, 2011

Last month, we learned that Bradley Cooper had been offered a role opposite Ryan Gosling in Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines. Well now it looks like Cooper’s deal is closed, as Variety reports that he’s now officially on board the crime drama. Written by Cianfrance and Ben Coccio (Zero Day), the story follows a motorcycle stunt rider (Gosling) who becomes a bank robber to support his newborn son. Characterized as being reminiscent of The Godfather and The Deer Hunter, Cooper will play a rookie cop who crosses paths with Gosling’s character.
The Hangover Part II star is a busy guy as of late, as he’s poised to play Lucifer in Alex Proyas’ Paradise Lost, is shooting The Words this month, and has been offered the lead in the remake of The Crow, though that project is currently caught up in some legal troubles. Production on The Place Beyond the Pines is set to start this July in New York.

Brandon Routh to Star in Lacrosse Film CROOKED ARROWS

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 1st, 2011

Superman Returns star Brandon Routh is set to topline the sports film Crooked Arrows. Steve Rash (Can’t Buy Me Love) will direct the flick which is set in the world of lacrosse, because every American loves a good uplifting lacrosse movie. Variety reports that the story centers on a Native American high school lacrosse team that is forced to join the prep school league. Routh will play the part-Native American entrepreneurial son of the tribe’s leader, who is forced to coach the rag-tag team in a league full of much better rivals. Todd Baird is writing the screenplay. Filming is set to begin in Boston this July. http://collider.com/brandon-routh-crooked-arrows/94155/

Lasse Hallström in Talks to Direct Adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ SAFE HAVEN

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 1st, 2011

It appears that every single one of author Nicholas Sparks’ books will become a movie. Director Lasse Hallström (Chocolat) is currently in talks to helm Relativity’s adaptation of Sparks’ novel Safe Haven. Hallström has some experience with Sparks adaptations, having helmed last year’s Dear John starring Amanda Seyfried. Dana Stevens (City of Angels) wrote the screenplay for Safe Haven, and Deadline reports that Relativity hopes to have production underway this fall. The story centers on a mysterious young woman who shows up in a small North Carolina town. As she begins to fall in love, her dark past continues to haunt her. Josh Lucas to Lead NBC’s Series Adaptation of THE FIRM

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: June 1st, 2011

On the big screen it was Tom Cruise who stepped into the role of Mitchell McDeere in the adaptation of John Grisham’s novel The Firm. But as we recently learned, NBC was looking to take the novel to the small screen, and now Deadline reports Josh Lucas (Glory Road) will play McDeere in the TV series that begins ten years after the events of the film and novel. After taking down the Memphis law firm of Bendini, Lambert and Locke, a front for the Chicago mob, Mitch found his life uprooted by spending time in the Federal Witness Protection program. But now he and his family decide to come out from hiding and get back the lives they once had only to find that danger from the past hasn’t completely disappeared and there might be new threats just around the corner.
This will be the first regular TV series gig for Lucas who recently starred in another legal drama in the form of The Lincoln Lawyer. Whether or not Lucas has the same commanding presence as Cruise in the role remains to be seen, but we won’t find out until next year since NBC is putting The Firm together as a midseason series. More casting for the series is likely on the way to stay tuned.

THE BEAVER Pushed Back to May 6 Limited Release; Opens Wide May 20

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 7th, 2011

I can hardly wait to see The Beaver, but it looks like I’ll have to.  This bizarre Mel Gibson movie will premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in early March, and was originally scheduled for limited release March 23 followed by wide release starting April 8.  The SXSW premiere remains intact, but Summit Entertainment has delayed the limited release until May 6, with plans to open The Beaver wide May 20.
According to THR, there are two primary reasons for the delay.  Director/star Jodie Foster is shooting Roman Polanski’s God of Carnage until mid-March, and the new release date frees her up to work the promotional circuit.  Secondly, the studio hopes to capitalize on two months worth of good buzz from SXSW.  Hit the jump to read the official synopsis for The Beaver, which stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) alongside Gibson and Foster.

Lasse Hallstrom to Direct THE HYPNOTIST

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 7th, 2011

Lasse Hallström will return to the Swedish cinema after more than two decades to direct The Hypnotist, an adaptation of the best selling crime novel by Lars Kepler.  The Hypnotist is the first in a series of novels revolving around Detective Joona Linna, which rank just below Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy (i.e The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels) on the list of Sweden’s most successful crime novels worldwide.  Svensk Filmindustri and Sonet Film hope The Hypnotist will launch a film franchise of similiar stature.  According to THR, The Hypnotist will shoot this winter for a planned 2012 release.
Hallström recently wrapped production an adaptation Salmon Fishing in Yemen which stars Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor, and Kristin Scott Thomas.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis of Kepler’s The Hypnotist.

Confirmed: Cobie Smulders Cast in THE AVENGERS

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 7th, 2011

cobie-smulders-slice
We heard over the weekend that Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) was close to landing the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive director Maria Hill in The Avengers, intended as a sidekick of sorts for Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.  Variety confirms that Smulders is wrapping up a deal with Marvel to appear as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in up to nine films.  The character’s name isn’t specified, but the bio — “Character would work closely with Jackson’s Nick Fury, and eventually becomes the head of the espionage and law enforcement group” — sounds very similar to that of Ms. Hill.
I love Smulders on HIMYM — partly because Cobie Smulders is an awesome name, but mostly because of her endless charisma.  I don’t know how big the role will actually be, but I’m excited to see Smulders in a film of this size.  Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner star in The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon and scheduled for release on May 4, 2012.  Hit the jump for a brief character bio on Maria Hill.
