Michael Mann Confirmed to Direct AGINCOURT
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 16th, 2011 at 11:54 am

Last October, we learned that Michael Mann was considering an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s Agincourt. Today, ScreenDaily reports that Mann is now officially attached to direct and that Luc Roeg’s Independent is developing the project with Benjamin Ross writing the script. Roeg tells ScreenDaily that Agincourt now has “momentum”, but it’s still too early to predict a start date for filming. Mann recently directed the pilot for the upcoming HBO series Luck. He’s also been circling biopics of notorious Chicago crime boss Tony Accardo and Spanish Civil War photographer Robert Capa.

Cornwell’s novel tells about the famous 15th century Battle of Agincourt through the perspective of young fugitive Nicholas Hook who becomes an archer in King Henry V’s fight against the French. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Tilda Swinton, Michael Fassbender, and Mia Wasikowska to Star in Jim Jarmusch’s “Crypto-Vampire Love Story”
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 16th, 2011 at 10:30 am

Last August, we reported that director Jim Jarmusch had lined up talented actors Tilda Swinton, Michael Fassbender, and Mia Wasikowksa for his next film. Today, we finally have some details on the project and it sounds like a doozy. Jarmusch tells ScreenDaily that the film is a “‘crypto-vampire love story’, set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangiers.” Swinton, Fassbender, and Wasikowska will all play vampires with John Hurt in a featured role.

While I’ve grown more than tired with the glut of vampire flicks we’ve seen over the past several years, Jarmusch is obviously going to craft a vampire flick unlike any other. Granted, I’m not the biggest fan of his work, but I can appreciate that he’s uncompromising and original in his vision and I’m glad filmmakers like him can still get their movies made.

New Financier Comes on to HIGHLANDER Reboot; Justin Lin Still Attached; New Screenwriters Announced
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 16th, 2011 at 8:19 am

RCR Media Group has sent out a press release announcing they’re co-financing the Highlander reboot with Summit Entertainment and Neal Moritz Productions. For those unfamiliar with the premise, it’s about immortal guys called Highlanders who cut off each other’s heads until only one Highlander remains. Then he gets a special prize and a Queen song plays. The press release reports that Fast Five director Justin Lin is still attached, but keep in mind that his plate is filling up with other projects due to the success of Fast Five. Not only does Universal want to hit the gas on Fast and Furious 6, but Lin is also attached to Terminator 5. Does he want to make the first great Highlander movie (the original is campy fun, but not a great movie) or does he want to go to a film that’s likelier to succeed like Fast 6 or T5?

The press release also announces that Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Iron Man) wrote the screenplay, but back in February we reported that Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg had been hired to rewrite the script that was originally penned by The Wibberleys (National Treasure) . Neither Rosenberg nor The Wibberleys are mentioned in the press release, which you can read after the jump.

Chris Pine in Talks to Star in Jeff Nichols’ MUD
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 15th, 2011 at 7:52 pm

Chris Pine may star in Mud, the new drama from Take Shelter writer-director Jeff Nichols. 24 Frames reports that Pine would play the title character, fugitive who encounters two 14-year-old boys who attempt to help him escape from an island in the Mississippi. Rather than the hard-charging hero Pine has played in his recent films, Mud “is both an unsavory and a redemptive character and who teaches the boys as much as he learns from them.” Producer Aaron Ryder (Memento) says the film is in the vein of Stand By Me. FilmDistrict, which has been cleaning up at Cannes, will distribute.

Folks familiar with Pine’s acclaimed work on stage will probably be less unsurprised to hear him talking on more serious dramatic work in films. He’s got a nice mix of action and drama coming up with the untitled Jack Ryan reboot churning through development, Star Trek 2 likely to shoot sometime this year, and Alex Kurtzman’s family drama Welcome to People. He’ll next be seen in McG’s action-comedy This Means War. As for Nichols, some folks loved Take Shelter, but I thought it moved a bit too slowly and could use a bit of editing even though star Michael Shannon was electrifying.

Director Michael Hoffman (The Last Station) initiated principal photography last week on the remake of the 1966 caper comedy Gambit. Cameron Diaz and Colin Firth are subbing in for Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine, respectively, as partners in a con to sell a fake Monet painting. Stanley Tucci and Cloris Leachman have just signed on to the production; they will be joined by Alan Rickman and Tom Courtenay. Factor in the Coen Brothers wrote the screenplay, and there’s plenty of talent on both sides of the Gambit camera.

Production is in London right now, with plans to shift to New Mexico. See the first official image of Diaz and Firth in costume on the Gambit set along with the official press release after the jump.

Emma Roberts and Rory Culkin cover Nylon magazine’s May 2011 issue, which celebrates young Hollywood!
Here’s what the Scream 4 co-stars had to share:
Emma on her Nickelodeon years: “I loved that part of my life. A lot of people that were on Disney or Nickelodeon bash it afterwards. And I just think, That’s what got you your start! And also, from my experience, it was so fun. It was the calm before the storm… if you make the transition [as an actor] in the same way that you’re transitioning in real life, you’ll be fine. It’s when you’re 16 and you’re trying to play a 20-year-old hitchhiking stripper that people are gonna give you a hard time.”
Rory on the choice between boxing and music: “Boxing is a little more mindless and takes me away from everything. Music can do that, too, but it’s another art form, you know what I mean? It’s something to be passionate about. Whereas boxing is like, I wanna kick some ass and get my ass kicked. It’s awesome.”
Rory on his film roles up until now: “I’ve been sort of scared of certain roles in the past, almost to the point of being kind of snobbish… Now I’m just a lot more open to things - I’m starting to feel the need to exercise my acting and leave my comfort zone. I think Scream is an example of that.”
Emma on Glee: “I love that Gwyneth Paltrow’s on Glee. That’s something you would never think she’d do. And the fact that she just thought, I’m gonna let loose and do this - that’s so cool!”

**Eva Mendes, Kate Bosworth, Diane Kruger Among Actresses Reading for Female Leads in TOTAL RECALL Remake **Exclusive: Uma Thurman Talks BEL AMI **David O. Russell May Write Sequel to THE FIGHTER

Eva Mendes, Kate Bosworth, Diane Kruger Among Actresses Reading for Female Leads in TOTAL RECALL Remake
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 22nd, 2011
Now that Len Wiseman’s remake of Total Recall has Colin Farrell in the role originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 Paul Verhoeven film, the film is casting for the lead female roles. For those who haven’t seen the original film, the two lead female roles are Douglas Quaid’s (Farrell) wife Lori (played in the original film by Sharon Stone) and the other is Martian freedom fighter Melina (originally played by Rachel Ticotin).

Deadline reports that Diane Kruger and Kate Bosworth have read for the role of Lori; Paula Patton, Jessica Biel, and Eva Green have read for Melina, and Eva Mendes has read for both roles. Hit the jump for my thoughts on the casting. Total Recall is set to open on August 3, 2012.

Exclusive: Uma Thurman Talks BEL AMI
by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted: March 22nd, 2011
Almost a year ago we posted the first images from Bel Ami. However, since that time, news on the Robert Pattinson film has been rather quiet.

A brief refresher: slated for a 2011 release, Bel Ami follows Georges Duroy (Pattinson), a nineteenth-century French journalist who ascends Paris’ social ladder through a number of manipulative trists with talented and influential women. The film is based on Guy De Maupassant’s celebrated 1885 novel and will be helmed by noted theatre directors Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod. Uma Thurman and Kristen Scott Thomas co-star and, to the envy of Twifans the world over, be thoroughly taken advantage of by Pattinson. Thurman will play Duroy’s central paramour and ladder rung, Madeleine Forestier, while Thomas will play a socialite who is seduced by the suave, power-hungry protagonist.

This morning at the Ceremony press junket, I got to speak to Uma Thurman about who she plays in Bel Ami and has she seen the movie yet. Hit the jump for her comments.

David O. Russell May Write Sequel to THE FIGHTER
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 22nd, 2011
Over the past few weeks, Mark Wahlberg has been openly mulling a sequel to The Fighter. Wahlberg, who produced the flick in addition to starring as boxer Micky Ward, has said that the sequel would focus on the trilogy of fights between Ward and Arturo Gatti. He also says that everyone, including Oscar-winners Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, had such a great time that he couldn’t imagine them not wanting to return. However, a larger question mark was whether or not director David O. Russell would be willing to get behind the camera.

MTV caught up with O. Russell and learned that he would be willing to not only direct, but also write the script this time around. Says O. Russell:

“I think Micky’s story has a lot of heart whichever way you cut it. You’d go towards the Gatti fights and you could go into the history of the family more. I really like the sisters.”

Casting Call: Chris “Ludacris” Bridges Joins NEW YEAR’S EVE; Alan Rickman and Tom Courtenay Join GAMBIT Remake
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 22nd, 2011
We have some quick casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges has joined Garry Marshall’s upcoming romantic comedy New Year’s Eve. The ever-expanding cast already includes (deep breath) Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Jessical Biel, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Hilary Swank, Zac Efron, Sienna Miller, Lea Michelle, Sofia Vergara, Abigail Breslin, Til Schweiger, Seth Meyes, Jon Bon Jovi, Josh Duhamel, and Carla Gugino. So where does Bridges fit into this collection of actors getting paid for what probably amounts to a few days work in under-developed storylines about people falling in and out of love on New Year’s Eve? According to THR, Bridges will play “a NYPD cop who is working with the director of the Times Square festivities (Swank).”

Bridges was recently one of the few redeeming aspects of No Strings Attached and he’ll next be seen reprising his character “Tej” in the new Fast and Furious movie, Fast Five. Hit the jump for casting news regarding Alan Rickman and Tom Courtenay joining the remake of Gambit.

Casting Call: Julianne Moore to Play Sarah Palin in HBO’s GAME CHANGE; Eric McCormack Joins WWE’s BARRICADE
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 9th, 2011

A couple of casting stories for you this evening. Deadline reports that Julianne Moore has been tapped to portray Sarah Palin in Jay Roach’s (Dinner for Schmucks) adaptation of Mark Halperin and John Heilemann’s book following the behind-the-scenes turmoil of the 2008 presidential election. Roach previously directed another HBO Films flick, Recount, which examined the fallout of the 2000 presidential election. The script for Game Change is being penned by Danny Strong (Recount), and follows both the Obama campaign and the McCain campaign from the party primaries up through election night, so we’ve got quite a few more roles to be cast (Obama, Clinton, McCain, etc.).

Eric McCormack is set to star in the supernatural thriller Barricade for WWE (yes, that WWE). Heat Vision reports that filming on the Andrew Currie-directed flick is set to begin later this month. The story follows a recently widowed psychiatrist who takes his children to a remote cabin to unwind. Obviously, they’re not exactly alone and the father must battle “unknown forces” to save his family from peril. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Game Change.

CBS Films to Distribute Coen Brothers-Scripted Remake of GAMBIT Starring Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 9th, 2011
colin-firth-cameron-diaz-slice
CBS Films has acquired distribution rights to the Joel and Ethan Coen-scripted remake to the 1966 Michael Caine-Shirley MacClaine caper comedy Gambit. The remake, from director Michael Hoffman (The Last Station), is set to star Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz. Firth will play a London art curator who plots an elaborate scheme to con a wealthy collector into buying a fake Monet painting. As part of the ruse, he recruits a Texas steer roper (Diaz) to play the part of a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII.

Deadline reports that filming is set to begin in London this May. It appears that this will be the first film Firth will shoot following his Oscar win last month for his brilliant turn in The King’s Speech. Relatively new to the movie-making business, CBS Films recently scored a hit with The Mechanic and currently has the fantasy-romance Beastly in theaters. Diaz will next be seen in the R-rated comedy Bad Teacher.

CBS Films To Distribute The Coen Brothers-Scripted Gambit With Colin Firth

published: 2011-03-09 18:20:10 Author: Eric Eisenberg
CBS Films has made five films since January 2010, and despite trying to reach all corners of the market they have yet to have a real solid opening. From Extraordinary Measures to Beastly none of their films have opened at number one on their respective weekend and while the latter film is still in theaters, none have been able to make more than $40 million domestically (The Back-Up Plan is their most successful film with a $37 million domestic take). Their newest acquisition, however, has something that none of their other films have brought to the table: Oscar Power.

Deadline is reporting that CBS Films has won the U.S. distribution rights for Gambit, the con-artist film written by Academy Award winners Joel and Ethan Coen and starring recent Oscar winner Colin Firth. Directed by Michael Hoffman, Firth will play an art curator who teams up with a "Texas steer roper" - played by Cameron Diaz - to bamboozle the richest man in England. The film is a remake of the 1966 Michael Caine-Shirley MacLaine film of the same name.

This movie should be a perfect litmus test for the young distributor. Considering the incredible amount of talent on display here, it should be easy to open this movie at number one, provided that they get the release date right. Let's hope they can do it.

MY MOTHERS CURSE Starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand Opens March 30, 2012
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 9th, 2011
Paramount Pictures has scheduled the road trip comedy My Mother’s Curse for release on March 30, 2012. Barbra Streisand star as a mother and son who, according to Variety, “embark on a road trip so the inventor son can sell his latest invention.” Previous reports indicate the script from Dan Fogelman (Tangled) reunite Streisand with a lost love. Paramount may have actually performed the mother’s curse on the last pre-Easter 2012 weekend — as of this writing, no other film is scheduled that Friday.

Anne Fletcher (The Proposal) will direct; Fogelman, Rogen, and Streisand are producing alongside Lorne Michaels (SNL), John Goldwyn (MacGruber), Evan Goldberg (The Green Hornet), David Ellison (True Grit), Paul Schwake (Strange Wilderness), and Dana Goldberg (Yes Man). Rogen will next be heard March 18 as the titular alien in Paul, followed by Kung Fu Panda 2 on May 26. Rogen holistically returns to theaters in 50/50, which opens September 30.

Tom Hardy And Joel Edgerton Go Face-To-Face In The First Poster For Warrior
published: 2011-03-10 00:14:24 Author: Eric Eisenberg

If you took one lesson away from 2010's year in movies I hope it was that Tom Hardy is awesome. After years of putting on great performances under the radar, Christopher Nolan's Inception made him a break-out star that absolutely everyone wants a piece of. But while we wait for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and This Means War to get official release dates, the guaranteed next opportunity to see more of Tom Hardy will be on September 9th when Warrior is released and tonight we have the film's first poster.

Posted by Jennifer Morrison (who also stars in the film) on her Facebook wall, the artwork shows off both Hardy and his co-star Joel Edgerton. Directed by Gavin O'Connor (Pride and Glory), Hardy plays a man returning home to where his alcoholic former-boxer dad, played by Nick Nolte, trains him to become a mixed martial arts fighter. The greatest conflict, however, is that the tournament that he plans to enter will bring him face-to-face with his oldest brother and fellow fighter, played by Edgerton.

Nicole Kidman wears a white lace dress by Dolce & Gabbana on the cover of Marie Claire UK’s March 2011 issue, on newsstands Thursday (March 3).
Here’s what the 43-year-old Just Go with It actress had to share:
On her marriage to Tom Cruise: “As a couple we were very private. We were not out a lot and we were very, very tight and that’s why we lasted ten years, which is a good amount of time, particularly when you get married at 23. I was never seeking to be a celebrity. But I was prepared to do that for love. And that is something that is hard to do. It’s hard when you’re young. But I’m ready to give up anything for love because, ultimately, that is what you have. You get so much from a relationship when it is filled with love.”
On Botox: “Well, I move my forehead, I frown…I tried it, I didn’t like it, so I’ve gone back to my own forehead. But I’ve never had plastic surgery on my face. People say I have but I haven’t.”

Jenna Fischer Covers 'Redbook' March 2011

Jenna Fischer Covers 'Redbook' March 2011
Jenna Fischer rocks a Dolce & Gabbana dress on the cover of Redbook magazine’s March 2011 cover, on newsstands Tuesday (February 15)!
Here’s what the 36-year-old Office actress had to share:
On pressure to stay in shape: “In a normal job, if you gain or lose a few pounds, it’s no big deal. But in my business you have to tell someone so that the next time you go to a fitting, the clothes are the right size. It’s really embarrassing to have to say to your manager, ‘I’m now a 6 pant instead of a 4.’ Emails go out, and they cc the agents: ‘Jenna would like everyone to know that she’s now a 6 pant.’ This is why actresses obsess about their weight. It’s not a private affair.”
On whether her idea of “The One” has changed: “In a way, yes. After my divorce, someone said to me, ‘Finding love is not as hard as picking the right person to spend the rest of your life with.’ It was Paul Lieberstein, the executive producer of The Office; he also plays Toby on the show. I held on to that advice when I was searching. I’d start to fall for someone and think, But that’s not a good match. The fluttery feelings aren’t enough. When I was younger, I thought you married the person you fell in love with the most. But as [my ex-husband and I] learned what we wanted, I realized there was a whole other set of criteria. You have to ask, Do we have the same goals?”
On dating after her divorce: “I thought I’d go wild with freedom, but instead I pretty much did what I did in college - stay home with my cat [laughs]. I didn’t want to waste time flitting around. I remember going out with one cute and funny guy. I thought, We could have a really fun eight months, but that’s eight months I’m taking away from finding Mr. Right. I can’t afford that. So I ended it. In the midst of all that, I was having weekly script dinners with Lee, and I realized, I’m looking at basically the perfect man. It doesn’t get better than this.”
On being an aunt to her niece, Cecelia: “I already wanted kids, but even more so now. When Cecelia was 3 weeks old, Pam was on maternity leave, so I had a whole week off to spend with her. I took charge of the night feedings. It was so awesome: Every night at 9:30, I’d say, ‘You guys go to sleep now.’ I wanted CeCe all to myself. We really bonded.”

***THE KENNEDYS Finds a Home at Reelz Channel ***Cameron Diaz to Star Opposite Colin Firth in Remake of GAMBIT

THE KENNEDYS Finds a Home at Reelz Channel

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: February 1st, 2011

In January, we found out that The History Channel had decided not to air The Kennedys, an 8-part miniseries focusing on the life and times of the Kennedy family with an all-star cast including cast that includes Greg Kinnear (John F. Kennedy), Katie Holmes (Jackie Kennedy), Barry Pepper (Robert F. Kennedy) and Tom Wilkinson (Joe Kennedy). There was hope the controversial miniseries, which has been criticized for its negative portrayal of the iconic political family, to air on Showtime but the cable network passed. Now THR reports The Kennedys has landed a premiere at ReelzChannel, a cable channel mostly dedicated to talking about and going behind the scenes of various movies.  Hit the jump for more.
This will be the channel’s first foray into scripted programming. Apparently the channel makes it into 60 million homes across the country through various cable providers, so plenty of people will still get a chance to see the miniseries. The first two episodes will air on April 3rd and air the rest of the episodes on successive nights that same week. Since the deal at ReelzChannel includes the world premiere broadcast, the series will not be hitting Canada in March as was originally planned, but should still air up North sometime later.

Cameron Diaz to Star Opposite Colin Firth in Remake of GAMBIT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 1st, 2011

Cameron Diaz will co-star in Coen Brothers-scripted remake of the 1966 caper comedy Gambit.  According to THR, Colin Firth will play a “London art curator who plots an elaborate scheme to con a wealthy collector into buying a fake Monet painting. As part of the ruse, he recruits a Texas steer roper (Diaz) to play the part of a woman whose grandfather liberated the painting at the end of WWII.”  The roles in the original film were played by Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine.
Diaz recently costarred in The Green Hornet and will next be seen in the comedy Bad Teacher with Justin Timberlake.  Shooting on Gambit is expected to begin this May in London with The Last Station director Michael Hoffman at the helm.

***Virginie Ledoyen to Star in THE LAST BEAT; Plot Loosely Based on Last Days of Jim Morrison ***New Trailer for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES ***Colin Firth in Talks to Star in Coen Brothers Scripted Remake of GAMBIT

Virginie Ledoyen to Star in THE LAST BEAT; Plot Loosely Based on Last Days of Jim Morrison

by Talia Soghomonian    Posted: December 13th, 2010

French actress Virginie Ledoyen, whose claim to international fame was a starring role in The Beach alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, will appear in a movie inspired by Doors singer Jim Morrison.
The Last Beat is loosely based on his last days in Paris, where he died in 1971. Ledoyen will play Clémence, a countess and one of the two love interests of Jay Douglas, the Morrison-inspired character played by Shawn Andrews. Hit the jump for the synopsis and more.
virginie_ledoyen_01Its timing will somewhat coincide with the 40th anniversary of Morrison’s death 2011, although the release date has been announced for 2012. Oliver Stone’s 1991 biopic The Doors was released in time for the 30th anniversary, but that’s where the comparison between the two films ends.
Stone based his movie on Danny Sugerman and Jerry Hopkins’s biography of The Doors No One Here Gets Out Alive, and what bothers me is that he chose to portray mostly the negative aspects of Morrison’s life. Granted, there were many and it makes for good entertainment but the book depicted him as more than just a spoiled rock star and tortured soul.
While I have some reservations about The Last Beat — I’m not sure about the cliché love triangle — I am relieved that it will feature an original soundtrack and not a massacre of Doors songs.
The production company Bohemia Group revealed more details in a press release:
Writer and Director Robert Saitzyk (Godspeed) dives deeply into the torrid world of rock and roll to craft the realm that is the last days of rock star Jay Douglas in the film The Last Beat. Leading the cast in this powerful drama as the famous and tortured Douglas is Shawn Andrews, whose screen credits include the award winning Fix opposite Olivia Wilde, Dazed and Confused and City of Ghosts, and now attached is the César-nominated French actress Virginie Ledoyen, who has been seen in films such as Tout ce qui brille, The Army of Crime and of course Danny Boyle’s The Beach. Ledoyen will play Clémence, a French Countess involved in a turbulent love triangle between Jay Douglas and his self-professed “soul mate” — the earthy, but fiery Valerie Eason.
The Last Beat explores the life of a world weary self exiled rock star searching for a more artistic existence as a poet and writer in Paris, with the hope of erasing his tarnished former stardom. The film’s rich storyline will be accompanied by a completely original soundtrack redolent with the influences of the early 70’s ranging from Rock n Roll to French Pop. The Last Beat will offer audiences a refreshing view of the turbulent end of the 60’s and early 70’s along with an insightful perspective into the melancholy lifestyle and unerring clarity of a rock star and poet coming to terms with his own end.
Production is set to commence in late spring 2011 and will be shot primarily on location in Paris, France.
I’m assuming Valerie Eason is based on Jim Morrison’s girlfriend Pamela Courson, who died in 1974. The actress for the role hasn’t been announced yet.
Ledoyen’s international career never really took off after 2000’s The Beach, not Marion Cotillard style anyway, although she has worked consistently ever since. She has made a slew of (often average) French films and starred this year in Géraldine Nakach’s Tout ce qui brille. But Ledoyen seems intent on making an international “comeback” and is set to appear on TV in XIII: The Series, based on the popular comic by Jean Van Hamme and William Vanc, and, as we previously reported, has been cast in L.D. Napier’s directorial debut, Mis-Fits.

New Trailer for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 13th, 2010

Disney has released a new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.  As we’ve previously reported, the film picks up where Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End left off: with Captain Jack Sparrow hunting for the Fountain of Youth.  Unfortunately for Captain Jack, a woman from his past forces him on to the Queen Anne’s Revenge, which is a nice little ship as long as you don’t mind that its captain is the ruthless pirate Blackbeard.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer, which contains mermaids, zombies, and Keith Richards.  The film stars Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Kevin R. McNally, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Sam Claflin, and Geoffrey Rush.   Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens in 3D on May 20, 2011.  Click here to check out our write-up of the trailer’s premiere at Disneyland.

Briefly, this trailer doesn’t sway me one way or the other on the movie. Jack looks like he’ll remain a static characters and the plot looks overstuffed. However, I’m one of the few people that likes the overstuffed Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End. The trailer shows a lot of scenes with low-lighting which makes me nervous about the 3D since the technology almost always dims the picture. I’ve got mixed feelings on this flick, but hopefully I’ll end up enjoying it as much as the first three.
Here’s the official synopsis for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides:
Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past and he’s not sure if it’s love or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard, Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.
Genre: Action Adventure
Cast: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Kevin R. McNally (Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl), Astrid Berges-Frisbey (The Sea Wall), Sam Claflin (The Pillars of the Earth), and Geoffrey Rush
Directed by: Rob Marshall (Chicago)
Screenplay by: Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio
Produced by: Jerry Bruckheimer
Executive Producers: John DeLuca, Ted Elliott, Chad Oman, Terry Rossio, Mike Stenson, Barry H. Waldman

Disneyland Goes All-Out for the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4 Trailer Premiere – UPDATED With Video

by Rob Vaux    Posted: December 13th, 2010

Swashbucklers of all varieties swarmed the Disneyland Resort this morning, eager to watch the world premiere of the Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides trailer. Fans and contest winners lined up in front of the AMC theaters in Downtown Disney, braving the icy cold California morning (in which temperatures plunged into the low 50s) in order to be the first to catch a glimpse of Jack Sparrow’s new adventures. “Official” pirates from the park sang sea shanties and conducted costume contests, while director Rob Marshall appeared beforehand to introduce the trailer. In the midst of it, he dropped a few tantalizing hints about the content  of the new film. (Avast mateys! Thar be spoilers ahead. Fairly warned thee be, says I.)
After the trailer screening, guests were taken into the Disneyland park just before the gates opened for the day. The sailing ship Columbia appeared—complete with crew—who sang more sea shanties and swore in the new “crew members” with a lengthy pirate oath. They were joined by none other than Jack Sparrow himself,  who seemed confused as to whether the guests were to be conscripted or executed. Once the issue was cleared up (thankfully with no blood being spilt), the guests took a trip on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, followed by a breakfast and after-party at a nearby pavilion. While Disney provided bacon and eggs, the guests could take pictures with Jack and his crew, as well as with the huge mock-up of the film’s teaser poster, featuring a grinning silver Jack skull. Hit the jump for more.
UPDATE: Disney has provided us with some footage from today’s event as well as an interview with director Rob Marshall. Both are after the jump:
As for the trailer itself? It featured an introduction from Geoffrey Rush, who reprises his role of Captain Barbossa in the film, The wily pirate has changed sides, it seems: now serving as a captain in the British Navy (though we suspect this particular leopard retains the same spots as ever). He and Johnny Depp’s Jack open the proceedings in London, where Jack is seeking the whereabouts of an imposter. From there, it’s back to the New World in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth. Along the way, they’re joined by Penelope Cruz’s feisty pirate queen and Ian McShane’s thoroughly unpleasant Blackbeard.  Watch it for yourself here.
The trailer only hinted at the details—though to be sure, there were plenty of buckles swashed throughout—concentrating instead on the film’s use of 3D. The camera swooped through lush jungles and barren shorelines while Jack (and the audience) dodge cannonballs, rapiers, and the occasional zombie hurtling right in our face. As impressive  as they all looked, however, the real selling point was the same as it was for the first three films: Depp, at his mincing, quipping best in the center of all the mayhem. The trailer delivered plenty of his one-liners (“I hope you all saw that, “ he gesticulates after a spectacular dive, “because I will not be doing it again!”), as well as more athletic moments of the crossing-sabers-and-swinging-from-yardarms variety.  The trailer made clear that—whatever changes On Stranger Tides makes—the essence of the series remains intact.
Afterwards, Marshall himself spoke to the press about the film, and the big turnout for the trailer.
“I remember going on the ride as a kid,” he said, while standing in front of the entrance. “It was back when they used tickets for the different rides. This was definitely an E-ticket back then, and we got the same feeling with this shoot: a real adventure.”
Part of that adventure involved getting the 3D right. Marshall said he considered it a key step because it immerses the audience in Jack’s world… a world, he stressed, that relied on actual  locations rather than CGI.
“Because there’s 3D involved, you’re bringing in 3D rigs. It’s one thing if you’re bringing it into a soundstage or on a green screen. Here, we’re bringing it into caves and into waterfalls, and jungles and swamps…. Some pretty amazing places.”
Marshall was quick to sing the praises of his entire cast, particularly Depp, who he described  as “a dream.” Working with him posed a particular challenge, since the actor knows the character so well, but both men quickly established a working rapport. “He’s an actor, and he wants guidance,” Marshall claimed. “It was my job to give him what he needed without getting in the way of this wonderful figure he’s created.”
As for other surprises the film might contain, the director was tight lipped, and when asked if it would make any nods to the ride, he simply smiled. “There are two… but I’m not going to tell you which ones.”
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides opens May 20, 2011.
UPDATE: Here’s director Rob Marshall talking about today’s event and the next video is 10 minutes of behind the scenes footage from this morning.  In case you weren’t able to go, now you can see what you missed:
