Drew Barrymore to Direct/Produce Young Adult Thriller HEIST SOCIETY

by Jason Barr   Posted: June 30th, 2011

Drew Barrymore has signed on to direct/produce the young adult thriller Heist Society for Warner Bros. Based on the novel by Ally Carter, Heist Society tells the story of Katarina Bishop, a young woman who embraces her family’s history of cat burglary and general thievery so as to clear her father’s name in a case regarding a mobster’s missing art collection. Barrymore will re-team with Whip It scribe Shauna Cross who will pen the adaptation under Barrymore’s supervision.
In addition to Heist Society, Barrymore is also attached to direct the adaptation of Liz Tuccillo’s novel How To Be Single for New Line. It is believed that the director will take on Heist Society after wrapping How To Be Single. For more on the former, check out a synopsis of Carter’s novel after the jump.  http://collider.com/drew-barrymore-heist-society/99793/

Brooklyn Decker Learns WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 30th, 2011

Swimsuit model-turned actress Brooklyn Decker (Just Go With It) will join director Kirk Jones’ (Everybody’s Fine) adaptation of the bestselling book What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Decker joins a cast that already features Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, and Isla Fisher. Per Deadline, the actress will make a turn as the wife of an older man who makes carrying and giving birth to twins seem like a breeze, and is hated by her peers as a result. The pic begins shooting this summer and is aiming for a May 11th, 2012 release. In addition What to Expect, Decker also stars alongside Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard, Taylor Kitsch, Josh Pence, and Rihanna in director Peter Berg’s Battleship which is scheduled to hit theaters the week after What to Expect on May 18th. http://collider.com/brooklyn-decker-what-to-expect-when-youre-expecting/99783/

Vince Vaughn Reunites with Ben Stiller for Akiva Schaffer’s NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 30th, 2011

Vince Vaughn will reunite with Ben Stiller in Akiva Schaffer’s sci-fi comedy Neighborhood Watch.  According to THR, the plot revolves around a group of suburban dads that use a “neighborhood watch” as a cover to get some away-time from their families.  However, the ruse becomes complicated when the group uncovers a plan to destroy the world.  I will start praying that Vaughn and Stiller don’t reprise their roles as Fast-Talking-Wiseguy-Who-Gets-Humiliated and Timid-Neurotic-Guy, respectively.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the most recent draft of the script.  Vaughn recently signed on to co-star in Lay the Favorite and he’s circling the comedies 2 Guns and Insane Laws.  The actor was recently seen in Ron Howard’s The Dilemma playing Fast-Talking-Wiseguy-Who-Gets-Humiliated.

Matthew Fox and Ed Harris Exit WORLD WAR Z

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 30th, 2011

It’s debatable whether or not Matthew Fox and Ed Harris were ever truly signed on to co-star in Marc Forster’s adaptation of Max Brooks’ World War Z, but whether they were on board or simply in negotiations, neither actor will be in the movie.  Vulture reports that Fox won’t be in the flick due to a scheduling conflict with Rob Cohen’s I, Alex Cross (Fox is playing the film’s villain).  It’s unknown why Harris opted out of WWZ, but now the production is scrambling to find two affordable but recognizable actors to fill the roles.  Shooting is already underway and the producers are having actors read in both Los Angeles and London.
Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel, which examines the world post-Zombie apocalypse.  The film stars Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Anthony Mackie, Julia Levy-Boeken, and James Badge Dale.  World War Z is slated to open next year.

Possible Synopsis for Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 30th, 2011

A synopsis for Ridley Scott’s mysterious sci-fi flick Prometheus may have leaked online.  Details on the film have been kept under wraps to the point where there’s still confusion over how much of it is an Alien prequel and how much is its own beast.  At this point, the consensus seems to be that it is a prequel to Alien, but it’s outside the mold of the franchise to date.  This synopsis sheds some light on how Prometheus could be both an Alien prequel and not an Alien-prequel.  Keep in mind that that this could just be elaborate fan fiction from a guy (or gal) with too much free time deciding to take what disparate elements we think we know and build it into a convincing synopsis.

New Poster for STRAW DOGS Breaks James Marsden’s Glasses

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: June 14th, 2011

I have yet to see the 1971 Straw Dogs (it’s on my Before I Turn 30 list), but I love that poster.  The image of Dustin Hoffman in the broken glasses tells me everything I need to know about the film, a thriller about a man pushed to the edge of reason when they move to a small village where the locals prove anything but hospitable.
James Marsden fills in for Hoffman in the upcoming remake, and now dons the broken glasses for a remake of the iconic poster.  There are a few twists: Screen Gems found a way to get Alexander SkarsgĂ„rd’s beautiful Swedish face in the picture and added the slogan “Everyone has a breaking point.”  The image can’t be as powerful four decades later, but this is smarter than your average poster.  Kate Bosworth also stars in Straw Dogs, opening on September 16.  See the new poster and its inspiration after the jump. http://collider.com/straw-dogs-poster/96490/

Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Opens Christmas Day 2012

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: June 14th, 2011

How cool is your family?  For instance, if the new Quentin Tarantino movie opened on Christmas Day, would you have to ditch the folks for a couple hours, or could you bring them along?  The Weinstein Company will put these family ties to the test with a December 25, 2012 release date for Django Unhcained [Box Office Mojo].  The supporting cast is mostly set: Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Leonardo DiCaprio are all on board or about to be barring any sticking points in negotiations.  Much less certain is who will play Django, the freed slave taught the tricks of the trade by a German bounty hunter (Waltz) to liberate his wife from an evil plantation owner (DiCaprio).  Will Smith was the early frontrunner, though a deal has not come easy.  More recently, Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx came up as possible DjangosShowbiz 411 hears Foxx is the closest to the role, but all is heresay until it’s in the trades.  Production is scheduled for later this summer or early fall — with the finish line in place, we’ll meet our Django soon enough.
Christmas Day is a Tuesday in 2012.  As of this writing, Django Unchained has the holiday all to itself, but Hunter Killer, Life of Pi, and The Lone Ranger open the Friday before, December 21.

Relativity to Distribute MACHINE GUN PREACHER This Fall; Paramount Picks Up Comedy Spec BASTARDS

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: June 14th, 2011

Lionsgate had tentative plans to release Machine Gun Preacher in the fall, but three other films — Warrior, Abduction, and Safe — will occupy the studio’s resources with September/October release dates.  Relativity’s fall is lighter, with Shark Night 3D in September and Immortals in November — as newcomers to distribution, the studio is eager for product to push.  The schedules worked out such that, per Risky Business, Lionsgate will hand off the domestic release for Machine Gun Preacher to Relativity.  (Lionsgate will still handle international distribution.)  Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan in the biopic about Sam Childers, “a drug-dealing biker who found God and became an activist on behalf of child soldiers in Sudan.  Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) directed the $30 million independent production from a script by Jason Keller.  No official release date is set, but Machine Gun Preacher is still on the agenda for Fall 2011.

David O. Russell Circling MALEFICENT, Talks About Upcoming Projects and Why He Left UNCHARTED

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 14th, 2011

When a director is coming off an Oscar nomination, or better yet a win, he or she automatically has some clout in choosing his or her next project.  It’s a tough decision, and you may only get once chance, so you best choose wisely. David O. Russell, coming off his Oscar nomination for The Fighter, seems to be circling 1,000 projects at the moment, and another one has just been added to the list.  THR reports that Russell is currently one of the directors being considered to helm Disney’s fantasy flick Maleficent. Angelina Jolie is attached to star, and Tim Burton was previously set to direct before backing out last month.
Disney is looking at a number of directors for the job (Darren Aronofsky and David Yates have been mentioned) and Russell has plenty on his plate already, so this deal is far from a sure thing, but it appears Russell is on the list of candidates.  The Fighter director recently dropped out as director of Uncharted, and today he explained a bit about why he left that project.  Hit the jump to check out what he had to say, which includes updates on a number of his upcoming projects. http://collider.com/david-o-russell-maleficent-uncharted/96494/

Akiva Schaffer May Direct NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH With Ben Stiller Circling Starring Role

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 14th, 2011

It looks like The Lonely Island member and Hot Rod director Akiva Schaffer may next helm a high-profile sci-fi comedy. Schaffer, who currently serves as a writer on SNL, has been offered the director’s chair on Fox’s long-in-development comedy Neighborhood Watch. Heat Vision reports that Schaffer has the offer, and that Ben Stiller is circling one of the starring roles. The plot revolves around a suburban neighborhood watch group that serves as a front for some dads just wanting some time away from their families. You know, for fantasy baseball and such. Things go awry, however, when the stumble upon a plot to destroy the world.
Originally, Peter Segal (50 First Dates) was going to direct the flick, but it appears that he’s now left the project. Last we heard, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg had come aboard to perform a rewrite of the script. Hit the jump for more. http://collider.com/akiva-schaffer-neighborhood-watch-ben-stiller/96438/

Robert Zemeckis in Talks to Direct THE WIZARD OF OZ Remake

by Ramses Flores    Posted: November 16th, 2010

There are some movies that should never be remade.  One of those films is The Wizard of Oz.  However, it looks like nothing is sacred anymore in Hollywood since Warner Bros is now in early talks with Robert Zemeckis to direct a live-action remake of the beloved 1939 classic.  The proposed film will be so true to the classic film that Warner Bros is even planning on using the original script from the movie.  I hope that everyone is in agreement with me when I say that I think that this sounds terrible and completely unnecessary.  You can hit the jump to find out why Warner Bros might go through with the film along with a recap of what other Wizard of Oz films are in the works.

YOUR HIGHNESS Red Band Trailer and 13 Images

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 16th, 2010

The red-band trailer for Your Highness has just been released and it looks every bit as amazing as the film sounds on paper. Directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express), the adventure-comedy tells the story of two brothers on a quest to save their kingdom’s princess from an evil wizard before he has sex with her.  Think The Princess Bride meets Superbad. Danny McBride and James Franco star as the two brothers, and are joined on their quest by the hilarious Natalie Portman (remember her digital shorts on SNL?).  Zooey Deschanel plays the princess and Justin Theroux portrays the evil wizard who steals her away.  McBride and his Eastbound and Down writing partner Ben Best wrote the screenplay.
Justin Theroux, who is also a screenwriter (he wrote Tropic Thunder and Iron Man 2), recently sat down with Steve and discussed the film, which he describes as “insane.”  Your Highness hits theaters April 8th, 2011. Hit the jump to check out the trailer, the synopsis, and a bunch of images:

Today is officially “trailer day” as the recent teaser for Pixar’s Cars 2 and the trailer to Jason Statham’s actioner The Mechanic can attest. Next up is the official premier of the trailer to Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood starring the lovely Amanda Seyfried in the titular role. The trailer is actually quite impressive from a visual standpoint, very reminiscent of Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, what with its creepy Hammer-esque designs, and heavily contrasted colors. It goes without saying the film boasts a decidedly Twilight-ish vibe, complete with leading man Shiloh Fernandez doing his best Robert Pattinson impersonation (he even has the hair).
Red Riding Hood also stars Gary Oldman, Lukas Haas and Virginia Madsen, and is set for release March 11, 2011. Hit the jump to see the trailer, the first poster, and the official synopsis:

The upcoming Pete Segal-directed Neighborhood Watch will undergo a re-write by none other than Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (far right, above), who previously penned behind such hits as Pineapple Express and Superbad.   According to Heat Vision, the story “concerns a suburban ‘neighborhood watch’ group, which is actually a front for dads to get some male bonding time away from the family. Things go awry when the group accidentally uncovers a plot bent on destroying the world.”  Hit the jump for more on the project.

New Posters for PAUL and BLACK SWAN

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 16th, 2010

New posters have gone online for Paul and Black Swan.  We brought you the first poster for Paul last week, but this new UK one features a spotlight so bright that it has perfectly smoothed Simon Pegg’s face.  If these two posters let us know anything about the title character, it’s that he’s an alien where the default facial expression is smirking.  Paul opens in the US on March 18, 2011.
There’s also a lovely new poster for Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.  I finally got to see the film this past weekend and it did not disappoint (look for my full review when the film opens on December 3rd).  While this new poster doesn’t come close to the beauty of the international posters, it’s still worth checking out.  Hit the jump to see both posters.
