3 Clips from TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON
by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted: June 24th, 2011
With director Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon getting released next week, Paramount has sent over three clips from the film. Even thought the clips had previously been released, I figure a few of you haven’t seen them, and I’ve also put them in one video player so they’re easy to watch.
Everything I’ve seen from TF3 tells me this is going to be one hell of a ride. Here’s my reaction to watching 15 minutes of footage. Remember, Bay filmed the third installment in 3D, so it’s definitely worth checking it out in 3D. After watching a number of scenes in 3D a few weeks ago, I think TF3 will raise the bar like Avatar. We’ll find out next week. Hit the jump for the clips. http://collider.com/transformers-3-dark-moon-movie-clips/98550/
John Goodman In Talks To Join Ben Affleck's Argo
published: 2011-06-24 20:35:56 Author: Eric Eisenberg
If there was ever a movie made about you, what actor do you think casting agents would hire if they were going on looks alone? Because 9/10ths of us are superficial assholes, chances are that most people would say George Clooney or Scarlett Johannson instead of Steve Buscemi or Chewbacca. We can't all look like Brad Pitt. Some of us look like John Goodman, and there's nothing wrong with that. Let's hope former make-up artist John Chambers' surviving family doesn't take offense.
Variety reports that Goodman has entered talks to play in Argo, the political thriller being directed by Ben Affleck. Based on true events, the film is about a secret CIA mission during in 1979 to rescue six American hostages being held captive in Iran. The unit was successful in their mission by pretending that they were part of a film crew scouting locations in the area. The title comes from the name of the fake movie, which was originally supposed to be an adaptation of the Roger Zelazny book "Lord of Light" that was never made. Already attached to the project is Alan Arkin, who will be playing Lester Siegel, a Hollywood producer hired to make the "film production" seem more authentic. Chambers, whom Goodman will be playing in the film, is best known for his work on all five of the original Planet of the Apes movies.
There's nothing about this project thus far that suggests it will be anything less than amazing. Affleck has now twice proven that he's a bigger talent behind the camera than in front of it and between Arkin and Goodman he already has the makings of an incredible cast. The only way I would be more excited would be if they were going the Wag The Dog approach and playing up the lighter side of the situation, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

Ray Liotta To Play A Corrupt Cop In Derek Cianfrance's A Place Beyond The Pines
published: 2011-06-24 22:26:49 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Ray Liotta is like a scientist who discovered the cure for cancer but forgot to write down the formula, so he spends the rest of his life trying to recreate it. In 1990, the actor starred in what is widely considered to be one of the greatest gangster films of all time, Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, but in the nearly 50 films since hasn't found a project even close to the same level of quality. Perhaps the missing part of that equation is working with another terrific director, and here's hoping he has found that in Derek Cianfrance.
Liotta is set to play a corrupt cop (again) in Cianfrance's A Place Beyond The Pines, according to Variety. The film, which is the director's follow-up to last year's incredible Blue Valentine, is about a motorcycle racer - played by Ryan Gosling - who starts robbing banks and goes head-to-head with a young cop - played by Bradley Cooper - who wants to take him down. When I spoke to Cianfrance last December, he told me that the project has been four years in the making and that the film begins with Gosling finding out that he's a father. Initially describing the movie as involving motorcycles and guns, the filmmaker wants to show violence in an unfiltered way and how horrific it can be. Said Cianfrance,
"Blue Valentine is a very emotionally violent movie and so difficult, so I want to put guns in this one and show just the cowardly nature of guns and how chicken-shit they are, basically, and to show the reverberations of guns. It’s just like the sexuality of Blue Valentine, I wanted to look at it straight, I wanted to look at it without a filter, without a sensationalized filter, without trying to make it erotic or titillating. I just wanted to look at it as part of the character. There’s sexuality in Pines too, and violence. The violence is going to hurt. It’s not easy violence; it’s not violence that’s taken lightly. It’s violence that’s violent."Between the plot lines about a motorist moonlighting as a criminal, Ryan Gosling's involvement, and the promised brutality of the violence, this project is starting to remind me a lot of Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive. While I'd like to say that there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, I truly believe that Cianfrance is a great director and I'd hate to see his next film suffer in the shadows of a different-but-similar project. Given the creative minds at work, there's something in the back of my mind that's telling me I don't need to worry.

Emma Stone Won't Be Starring In Pride & Prejudice & Zombies
published: 2011-06-24 16:28:02 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Earlier this week it was reported that Easy A star Emma Stone had been offered the lead in the Craig Gillespie-directed adaptation of Seth Grahame Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It's important to note at this juncture that the story didn't say that she was confirmed to star, and it didn't say that she was negotiating a deal. Do you see where this is going yet?
Deadline reports that Stone has decided to pass on the comedy-horror film. While it was never confirmed, it was widely expected that the actress was offered the role of Elizabeth Bennet, who, in the altered story, is turned into a zombie-killing expert. The production has had more than it's fair share of problems since being announced in late 2009. David O. Russell was originally signed on to direct with Natalie Portman starring, but both dropped out, as did Mike White, Russell's replacement, a few months later.
While I'm sure that Stone would look amazing wearing blood-soaked period garments, I think this was a smart move on her part. Stone already has undead experience with a co-starring role in Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland. While it still may be a few years off, a sequel is still planned, and mainstream audiences might not like seeing Stone doing too much of the same thing. Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but it's a good career move.

Eva Mendes Joins Derek Cianfrance’s THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES; Greta Gerwig in Talks to Co-Star
by Matt Goldberg Posted: June 14th, 2011
Eva Mendes has joined Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper in The Place Beyond the Pines with Greta Gerwig in Talks to co-star. Derek Cianfrance’s follow-up to Blue Valentine stars Gosling as a biker-turned-bank-robber and Cooper as a cop-turned-politician in the multi-generational crime drama. Deadline reports that Mendes will play the robber’s love interest and mother of his child while Gerwig would play the politician’s wife. Filming begins next month.Mendes recently co-starred in The Other Guys and Last Night. She was in the running for the remake of Total Recall, but I think missing out on that film to do this one is a positive outcome. As for Gerwig, she’s set to star opposite Joel Kinnaman in the indie romantic comedy Lola Versus. http://collider.com/place-beyond-the-pines-eva-mendes-greta-gerwig/96349/

Darren Aronofsky Wants Christian Bale as His NOAH
by Matt Goldberg Posted: June 14th, 2011
Darren Aronofsky wants Christian Bale to build him an ark that is 300 cubits by 50 cubits by 30 cubits. Vulture reports that Aronofsky is angling to get the Oscar-winning actor to star in the biblical epic Noah. As we previously reported, studios are circling the project to co-finance, but the film’s budget is projected at $130 million. Getting a star of Bale’s caliber could help secure financing. New Regency is already on board, but other contenders Summit, 20th Century Fox, and Paramount could make a better prediction of the film’s overseas potential if Bale comes on board (I swear, I’m not making these boat metaphors just for the puns).Bale is currently filming on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. He’s also set to star in the drama The Last Photograph, which is about a war correspondent in Afghanistan who is the sole survivor of an attack on Americans. That project is tipped to shoot after Bale wraps on Batman, but we’ll see how fast Noah comes together if Bale signs on for the super fun task of gathering two of every animal. Hit the jump for more details on Noah. http://collider.com/chrisitan-bale-noah-darren-aronofsky/96305/

With the 2011 Licensing International Expo currently underway in Las Vegas, many promo posters have started hitting the net. Yesterday we posted the promo poster for The Avengers as well as the promo posters for The Amazing Spider-Man, Hotel Transylvania, and more. Continuing the barrage of advertising, we now have promo posters for The Hobbit, The Hunger Games, Battleship, The Three Stooges, The Lorax, 47 Ronin, The Croods, The Bourne Legacy, Rise of the Guardians, Stretch Armstrong, RIPD, Fast & Furious 6, and How to Train Your Dragon 2. It’s worth noting that the promo poster for Fast & Furious 6 says the film is due out in 2013, which isn’t too surprising. More intriguing is that the poster for How to Train Your Dragon 2 is simply titled “Dragons“.

The new movie will center around the gang's ten year high school reunion. Oz (Chris Klein) is a big shot with a Malibu mansion and a girlfriend who seems to be a gold-digger. Heather (Mena Suvari) is dating a middle-aged surgeon who tries to act younger than his age. Stifler's (Seann William Scott) life has gone down the drain — he's unhappily working as a temp, and isn't getting laid much. He avoids going to the reunion.
Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is an "international traveler" and will be scoring with Trish, a bartender who used to go to band camp with Michelle. Stifler's Mom (Jennifer Coolidge), the original MILF, will be making an appearance. Bradley Cooper Joins Ryan Gosling in THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES
by Adam Chitwood Posted: June 1st, 2011
Last month, we learned that Bradley Cooper had been offered a role opposite Ryan Gosling in Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines. Well now it looks like Cooper’s deal is closed, as Variety reports that he’s now officially on board the crime drama. Written by Cianfrance and Ben Coccio (Zero Day), the story follows a motorcycle stunt rider (Gosling) who becomes a bank robber to support his newborn son. Characterized as being reminiscent of The Godfather and The Deer Hunter, Cooper will play a rookie cop who crosses paths with Gosling’s character. The Hangover Part II star is a busy guy as of late, as he’s poised to play Lucifer in Alex Proyas’ Paradise Lost, is shooting The Words this month, and has been offered the lead in the remake of The Crow, though that project is currently caught up in some legal troubles. Production on The Place Beyond the Pines is set to start this July in New York.

Superman Returns star Brandon Routh is set to topline the sports film Crooked Arrows. Steve Rash (Can’t Buy Me Love) will direct the flick which is set in the world of lacrosse, because every American loves a good uplifting lacrosse movie. Variety reports that the story centers on a Native American high school lacrosse team that is forced to join the prep school league. Routh will play the part-Native American entrepreneurial son of the tribe’s leader, who is forced to coach the rag-tag team in a league full of much better rivals. Todd Baird is writing the screenplay. by Adam Chitwood Posted: June 1st, 2011
It appears that every single one of author Nicholas Sparks’ books will become a movie. Director Lasse Hallström (Chocolat) is currently in talks to helm Relativity’s adaptation of Sparks’ novel Safe Haven. Hallström has some experience with Sparks adaptations, having helmed last year’s Dear John starring Amanda Seyfried. Dana Stevens (City of Angels) wrote the screenplay for Safe Haven, and Deadline reports that Relativity hopes to have production underway this fall. The story centers on a mysterious young woman who shows up in a small North Carolina town. As she begins to fall in love, her dark past continues to haunt her. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Sparks’ book. http://collider.com/lasse-hallstrom-safe-haven/94147/Josh Lucas to Lead NBC’s Series Adaptation of THE FIRM
by Ethan Anderton Posted: June 1st, 2011
On the big screen it was Tom Cruise who stepped into the role of Mitchell McDeere in the adaptation of John Grisham’s novel The Firm. But as we recently learned, NBC was looking to take the novel to the small screen, and now Deadline reports Josh Lucas (Glory Road) will play McDeere in the TV series that begins ten years after the events of the film and novel. After taking down the Memphis law firm of Bendini, Lambert and Locke, a front for the Chicago mob, Mitch found his life uprooted by spending time in the Federal Witness Protection program. But now he and his family decide to come out from hiding and get back the lives they once had only to find that danger from the past hasn’t completely disappeared and there might be new threats just around the corner.
This will be the first regular TV series gig for Lucas who recently starred in another legal drama in the form of The Lincoln Lawyer. Whether or not Lucas has the same commanding presence as Cruise in the role remains to be seen, but we won’t find out until next year since NBC is putting The Firm together as a midseason series. More casting for the series is likely on the way to stay tuned.http://collider.com/josh-lucas-the-firm-nbc/94132/

Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek and More to Provide Voices for Aardman’s THE PIRATES! IN AN ADVENTURE WITH SCIENTISTS
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 5th, 2011
Aardman Animation has assembled an impressive voice cast for their upcoming stop-motion 3D animated film The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists. Variety reports that Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, Salma Hayek, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Brendan Gleeson, Brian Blessed, and Ashley Jensen will all lend their voices to the film. The movie will be the first voice acting role for Grant and he’ll play the lead role of a “bearded Pirate Captain who travels far and wide in a quest to win the much coveted Pirate of the Year Award.” I’m already smiling at the thought of someone with Grant’s signature foppish, befuddled delivery playing a pirate. Chicken Run co-director Peter Lord will direct alongside Jeff Newitt.
While Pixar is usually dubbed the “Animation Studio with the Perfect Track Record” I’ve always been incredibly charmed by Aardman’s films. They’ve only done three feature films to date (Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and Flushed Away) and I’ve enjoyed all of them. Their latest film, Arthur Christmas, opens in 3D on November 23rd.
Bradley Cooper Offered Role Opposite Ryan Gosling in Derek Cianfrance’s THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES
by Matt Goldberg Posted: May 5th, 2011
Director Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine was one of the most celebrated films of last year. This past February, we learned that he was planning to reunite with star Ryan Gosling for the crime flick The Place Beyond the Pines. Cianfrance says people have told him that the film, which follows a motorcycle stunt rider (Gosling) who becomes a bank robber to support his newborn son, feels like a cross between The Deer Hunter and The Godfather. Variety reports that Sidney Kimmel Entertainment has come on board to finance and produce multi-generational crime drama and that Bradley Cooper has been offered a starring role. If Cooper were to sign on, he would play a rookie police officer who crosses paths Gosling’s character. Principal photography is set to begin this summer.

RETREAT Trailer Starring Cillian Murphy and Jamie Bell
by Jason Barr Posted: May 5th, 2011
A trailer for first time director Carl Tibbetts’ thriller Retreat is now available online. Starring Cillian Murphy, Jamie Bell, and Thandie Newton, the film tells the story of a couple (Murphy and Newton) who retreat to an island in an attempt to patch up their relationship following a family tragedy. While shades of Lars von Trier’s Antichrist come to mind at first glance, the trailer establishes Retreat’s main threat as coming in the form of an injured Jamie Bell who washes onto the island warning of a fatal airborne disease. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but it should also be noted that there aren’t any talking foxes in the two-minute cut.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer for yourself. Sony Pictures will distribute Retreat in North America although a release date is still withstanding.

BLUE VALENTINE Director Talks “Epic” THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES; Ryan Gosling to Star
by Adam Chitwood Posted: February 4th, 2011
One of the most heart-wrenching films of this past Oscar season had to be Blue Valentine starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. The film shows, in painfully honest detail, the destruction of a marriage. Williams’ performance got her an Oscar nod, and now the man behind the camera is talking about his next feature. Director Derek Cianfrance said his next project, The Place Beyond the Pines, will be about “the transformative power of fatherhood and the idea of what happens though generations, the things that get passed down.” Furthermore, his Blue Valentine star Ryan Gosling is set to play the lead:
“Ryan’s going to play Luke, a motorcycle stunt rider who finds out he has a baby and he tries to become a father. It’s kind of an epic movie. It takes place over a couple of generations and it’s kind of a crime story, kind of a mystery. I’ve had people tell me they feel like its The Deer Hunter meets The Godfather.”
In his interview with The Playlist, Cianfrance said the film is influenced by the works of author Jack London. He also revealed that they’re in the middle of financing right now and plan on shooting sometime this summer in New York. The director is also currently working on a bodybuilding comedy for HBO.
Jeff Bridges to Play Exorcist in THE SEVENTH SON
by Matt Goldberg Posted: February 4th, 2011
Earlier this week, we reported that Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) had been offered a starring role in The Last Apprentice and that Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) were also circling the project. Just Jared reports that the project is now titled The Seventh Son (it was formerly titled “The Spook’s Apprentice“) and that Bridges is officially on board to play an exorcist. The film, which is set in the 1700s, follows Tom Ward (Pettyfer, if he signs on), an exorcist-in-training who is able to see and hear ghosts and can smell the presence of death. Lawrence would play a suspected witch. Sergey Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan) will direct.
Hit the jump for a synopsis of the first novel in the Last Apprentice series.
Here’s the synopsis for The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch:
Twelve-year-old Thomas Ward, as the seventh son of a seventh son, has no inheritance and is bored with farm work, and even though his new job will mean the superstitious villagers will forever shun him, he is eager to go off to adventure with the tall, hooded man he calls the Spook. His mother, a magical person herself, approves, and the Spook’s teaching is strict but kind. But when Tom has only learned enough to be able to control their house-boggart, he is tricked by Alice, the young daughter of a witch family, into inadvertently releasing and then killing Mother Malkin, a witch the Spook has imprisoned in a pit. This is no polite wicca-type witch, but a snuffling, slime-trailing, cannibalistic creature reminiscent of Tolkien’s nasgils. The story of Tom’s escape from the reincarnated witch’s hideous revenge is full of horrible details, as Alice helps, and then once again betrays him. This well-crafted novel marks an auspicious start for an exciting and fast series for young teens. [Amazon]
