Johnny Depp Close to Signing on for Fifth PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: July 5th, 2011

For a while there, it looked as if we might be spared another rushed entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, as star/lynchpin Johnny Depp was reportedly not entirely certain he wanted to return. Well apparently the actor realized that he doesn’t own enough houses in France and/or armbands, because now The Wrap reports that Depp is close to a deal to return once again in a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film. (The Wrap now reports that Depp’s total profits from the entire franchise so far is $350 million. Holy hell).
This really isn’t all that surprising. The latest sequel, On Stranger Tides, just crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box-office. Obviously Disney and everyone involved behind the scenes that stands to make even more money was itching to go back to the well. Hit the jump for more.  http://collider.com/johnny-depp-pirates-of-the-caribbean-5/100506/

Adam Sandler to Lead Voice Cast for Animated Family Film HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 5th, 2011

Sony Pictures Animation has lined up the voice cast for their 3D family comedy Hotel Transylvania.  Adam Sandler, King of the Family-Films-I-Never-Want-to-See, will play the lead voice of Dracula, the head of the lavish “five-stake” resort for monsters, Hotel Transylvania.  Dracula tries to prevent his teenage daughter Mavis from adventuring into the outside world, but runs into a complication when an ordinary guy (voiced by Andy Samberg) stumbles into the hotel and falls for Mavis.  The voice cast also includes Kevin James as Frankstein, Fran Descher as his bride Eunice, David Spade as Quasimodo, Steve Buscemi and Molly Shannon as a pair of married werewolves, and Cee Lo Green as a Murray the Mummy.  Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack) will direct.
Hit the jump for the press release which includes a longer synopsis and the box office clout of Sandler as if that were some indication his movies were actually good.  Hotel Transylvania is due out September 21, 2012.

Official Synopsis Revealed for LAY THE FAVORITE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 5th, 2011

We’ve received a press release announcing that Stephen Frears’ adaptation of the Beth Raymer’s memoir Lay the Favorite wrapped principal photography today.  The release includes the first official synopsis of the film and there are (unsurprisingly) some variations from the book.  While the book covers Raymer’s rise through the ranks of sports gambling, the movie apparently adds romantic entanglements and drama that, going by the synopsis, seem awfully forced.  But with Frears at the helm and a cast that features Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis, Joshua Jackson, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, I’m still interested in seeing this flick.

Clark Gregg and Rachel Bilson Join Amazing Cast of THE TO DO LIST

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 5th, 2011

The raunchy comedy The To Do List (formerly titled The Hand Job) already has an outstanding cast and now has added two more great names to the list.  The Playlist reports that Clark Gregg and Rachel Bilson have signed on to the flick which stars Aubrey Plaza as a sexually inexperienced teenager with a type-A personality who decides to engage in numerous sex acts before she goes to college.  Allow me to blow your mind with a rundown of who else is in this film: Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Alia Shawkat, Mae Whitman, Johnny Simmons, Donald Glover, Connie Britton, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Scott Porter, D.C. Pierson and Dominic Dierkes.  The Playlist speculates that Gregg will play the conservative father of Plaza’s character and Bilson will play her older sister.
Written and directed by Maggie Carey, filming is likely to get underway soon before the majority of the cast has to return to their various TV shows.

Danny Boyle Eyeing Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson for TRANCE?

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 5th, 2011

Danny Boyle has settled on the heist thriller Trance as his next film, but it’s going to have an odd schedule.  He plans to shoot it in 2012, break to direct the Summer Olympics, and then edit it with an eye towards a March 2013 release.  Michael Fassbender was rumored for the lead role he shady leader of a heist team gang partners with an art gallery assistant who masterminds the crime but then gets amnesia and forgets the location of the stolen portrait.  Fassbender ultimately passed on the role, but James McAvoy started circling another role in the flick.
Twitch now reports that Boyle is courting Oscar-winner Colin Firth to replace Fassbender (not a step down by any means) and he’s also looking at Scarlett Johansson for a supporting role.  Presumably, the role for Johansson would be the hypnotist the gang hires to get into the assistant’s memory.  Twitch also reports that Zoe Saldana and MĂ©lanie Thierry (Babylon A.D.) are also on his short-list for the part.  Hit the jump for a refresher on Firth and Johansson’s other projects. http://collider.com/trance-colin-firth-scarlett-johansson/100429/

With the holiday weekend behind us it’s time to give up the multinational obsession with fireworks and blowing things up so that we all finally can get back to obsessing over pop culture minutia. Fortunately that transition was made a little easier today with the release of four posters for upcoming movies that will soon be plastered all over multiplex lobbies. Today the internet has been graced with pics of the Sundance award-winner Tyrannosaur, as well as the upcoming thrillers Dream House, The Iceman, and Final Destination 5 (yes, shockingly The Final Destination didn’t end up being the final chapter in the franchise after it became a hit. New Images of Michael C. Hall and Mos Def in DEXTER Season Six

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: July 4th, 2011

Showtime has released two new images for the upcoming sixth season of Dexter.  The first, featuring Michael C. Hall standing crouched over a crime scene on the Miami beach, could be taken from any season.  (Though perhaps eagle-eyed viewers may spot a hint or two I missed.)  The second is more revealing in its depiction of Hall eying new cast member Mos Def suspiciously.  Or rather, Dexter is eying Def’s character (a reformed criminal) suspiciously, unless these are really insightful behind-the-scenes photos.
Edward James Olmos and Colin Hanks are also new to the cast this season, which we expect to premiere in September on the heels of the July 21 Comic-Con panel.  See the images after the jump. http://collider.com/dexter-images-season-6/100394/

John Malkovich to Star in SIBERIAN EDUCATION

by Brendan Bettinger  Posted: July 4th, 2011

John Malkovich has signed on to star in Siberian Education, an adaptation of the Nicolai Lilin autobiography of the same name.  Lilin grew up in Transnitria, a lawless community between Moldova and Ukraine that still maintains a strict moral code.  According to Variety, Malkovich will play “Grandfather Kuzja, who teaches his grandson Kolyma (played by Lithuanian actor Arnas Fedaravicius) the morals of  “honest criminals.’”
Stefano Rulli, Sandro Petraglia, and director Gabriele Salvatores (I’m Not Scared) collaborated on the screenplay, set in 1985-1995.  The international production starts shooting in Lithuania at the end of August — a few scenes will film in Italy.  Read the book synopsis after the break. http://collider.com/john-malkovich-siberian-education/100382/

BRIDESMAIDS Becomes Highest Grossing R-Rated Female Comedy Ever

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: July 4th, 2011

bridesmaids-movie-image-slice-01
Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids is the little comedy that could. Despite a modest budget and no A-list stars, the Judd Apatow-produced film has been a consistent staple on the box office charts week after week. Now, after recently becoming the highest grossing entry in Judd Apatow’s library, Bridesmaids has become the highest grossing R-rated female comedy ever (via THR). The film’s current domestic tally sits at $152.9 million, enough to dethrone the previous “top R-rated female comedy” record-holder Sex and the City (apparently the term “comedy” has a loose connotation).
The script by star Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo hit that sweet spot of insane hilarity paired with a sizeable amount of heart. The film also owes a great amount of its success to director Feig (Freaks and Geeks) and the tour-de-force cast that includes Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd and stand-out Melissa McCarthy. If you’ve yet to see Bridesmaids, you’ve definitely missed out on one of the funniest movies of the year. http://collider.com/bridesmaids-highest-grossing-female-comedy/100357/

Colin Firth, Scarlett Johansson For Danny Boyle's Heist Thriller Trance

published: 2011-07-04 12:00:15 Author: Sean O'Connell
Could Oscar winner Colin Firth be leaping from the Coen Brothers’ crime comedy Gambit to a leading role in Danny Boyle’s next picture?

As Boyle snaps crucial pieces into place for his developing feature Trance, a bank-heist-gone-wrong thriller, casting rumors continue to swirl. While James McAvoy reportedly is locked in to the role of Simon, his X-Men: First Class cohort, Michael Fassbender, allegedly will not be along for the ride. Now Twitch Film is going so far as to say that Boyle actively is pursuing King’s Speech star Firth to take Fassbender’s place in the role of Aiden, though we don’t know much beyond the names of Boyle’s characters and aren’t sure how they fit into the overall narrative.

Firth isn’t the only actor on Boyle’s wish list. Scarlett Johannson is being approached for the major supporting role of Elizabeth. No formal offers have been made to either actor, but “who Boyle wants, Boyle gets.”

Johansson’s involvement, while automatically making Boyle’s film a better looking endeavor, also brings up scheduling conflicts. We know that the actress is on the hook for Joss Whedon’s current tentpole picture The Avengers, where she plays Black Widow. Her name also is attached to Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin, with Patrick Warburton, but IMDB has that with a 2014 release date.

The chance to work with Boyle should entice virtually any actor to clear out their schedule. He recently coached James Franco to an Oscar nomination for 127 Hours, and the idea of him directing what’s sure to be a kinetic bank heist flick has our pulse racing. Here’s to hoping Firth and Johansson sign on to Trance, but until then, we can look forward to watching them in the equally-excellent-looking Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and We Bought a Zoo, respectively, when they open later this year.

Colin Farrell & Anton Yelchin: 'Fright Night' UK Posters!
Colin Farrell is one sexy vampire in this newly released UK poster for his upcoming film, Fright Night.
The 35-year-old Irish actor stars opposite David Tennant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Anton Yelchin, Toni Collette, and Dave Franco in the remake of the 1985 film.
“It’s a cult classic. That movie would not work today,” Dave told MTV last year of the original film. “[The new film is] obviously the same concept, but a lot has changed to make everything make sense now. For example, my character wasn’t even in the original, so they’ve changed a lot and added a lot of school elements, just let it build a little more.”
Fright Night, which is the story of a teen who suspects that his new neighbor is a vampire, will hit the big screen on August 19. http://justjared.buzznet.com/2011/07/05/colin-farrell-anton-yelchin-fright-night-uk-posters/

Aaron Sorkin and John Krasinski Developing HBO Miniseries LIFE AT THE MARMONT

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: June 23rd, 2011

He’s already got a new drama series at HBO with More as This Story Develops on the way, but Aaron Sorkin is working on yet another project at the cable network now. THR reports The Social Network scribe and The Office star John Krasinski are developing a new miniseries at HBO called Life at the Marmont, based on the book of the same name by the infamous hotel owners Raymond R. Sarlot and Fred Basten. The landmark Chateau Marmont at the center of Hollywood has long been a popular location always drawing in the biggest names in film, television, music and literature. Apparently the series, which Krasinski which also have a role in, will have a series of interconnected stories of several different hotel guests over several generations. I’m always interested in projects Krasinski takes on outside of The Office, and with Sorkin involved, this is yet another promising piece of entertainment from HBO.

James McAvoy to Replace Michael Fassbender in Danny Boyle’s TRANCE

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 23rd, 2011

It looks like Professor X is taking over a job originally set for Magneto. Variety reports that James McAvoy is in early discussions to join Danny Boyle’s Trance in a role for which Michael Fassbender was previously in talks. The film is a remake of Joe Ahearne’s 2003 TV movie of the same name and centers on an art heist gone wrong. The mastermind of the heist suffers a blow to the head during the operation, and subsequently suffers from amnesia. When his team questions the validity of his claims, and given that he’s the only one who knows where the painting is hidden, a female hypnotist is hired to get into his brain.
Boyle plans to start production in September, and after filming wraps he will immediately move on to directing the opening ceremony for London’s 2012 Summer Olympics. After the Olympics conclude in August, he’ll return to Trance to begin post-production, with a March 2013 release date being eyed. So all-in-all, Boyle has a very busy year coming up. While Fassbender’s a fantastic actor and it would’ve been nice to see him team up with Boyle, McAvoy is no slouch himself, so the casting change doesn’t seem too drastic.

Julia Ormond in Talks to Play Superman’s Mom in MAN OF STEEL

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 23rd, 2011

Director Zack Snyder continues to fill out the cast for Man of Steel, and it looks like he’s found Superman’s mom. Deadline reports that Julia Ormond is in talks to star as Superman’s Kryptonian mother Lara Lor-Van, opposite Russell Crowe who was recently cast as father Jor-El. Their counterparts, Clark Kent’s adoptive Earth parents, will be played by Kevin Costner and Diane Lane.
Henry Cavill is set to play the titular Man of Steel, with Amy Adams poised to play Lois Lane and, in an inspired bit of casting, Michael Shannon will be taking on the role of General Zod. Antje Traue will play villain/Zod’s partner Faora. Details on David Goyer’s script are mum, but production is set to get underway next month in Vancouver. Produced by Christopher Nolan, Man of Steel is currently eying a holiday 2012 release.

David O. Russell Testing Actresses for THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK Including Rachel McAdams and Olivia Wilde

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 23rd, 2011

Director David O. Russell is readying his follow-up to last year’s The Fighter, and he’s begun searching for his lead actress. Russell will next tackle an adaptation of The Silver Linings Playbook, which already has Mark Wahlberg set to star as a former high school history teacher who has just been released from a mental institution and plans on reconciling with his estranged wife.
Now Risky Business reports that Russell will be testing a number of actresses throughout the weekend to find his leading lady. Those meeting with Russell include: Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough and Olivia Wilde. Jennifer Lawrence is also mentioned, but her status is unclear. Filming is set to start in August. Angelina Jolie had recently been mentioned as a possibility as well, but she’s not included in this report. Jason Segel is such a charming, funny and genuinely nice guy that it’s easy to like him, as a person and as an actor. The fact that he has the talent to back all that up makes it impossible not to be a fan. In the new raunchy comedy Bad Teacher, starring Cameron Diaz as the inappropriately foul-mouthed and ruthless middle school teacher Elizabeth Halsey, Segel plays happy-go-lucky gym teacher Russell Gettis. Unfazed by rejection, he keeps flirting with and pursuing Elizabeth, even though she has told him that it’s never going to happen because he’s just not rich enough for her.
At the film’s press day, Jason Segel spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview, in which he talked about working non-stop while juggling films with his television series How I Met Your Mother, his relationship with Rush since shooting I Love You, Man, how much fun he had working opposite Cameron Diaz for Bad Teacher, and the tremendous respect he has for Justin Timberlake. He also talked about what attracted him to Jeff Who Lives at Home (he’s seen the film and says it’s fantastic), The Muppets being a dream project, how great the Freaks & Geeks / Undeclared reunion was at PaleyFest earlier this year, how much he’s been enjoying shooting The Five-Year Engagement with Nic Stoller, and that he’d really like to eat a Reuben, once he’s done playing a leading man for that film. Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" Films May Not Happen

Posted: May 6th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Universal Pictures has been planning to turn Stephen King's novel series "The Dark Tower" into three feature films with a TV mini-series in between each film. Ron Howard is on board to direct, Akiva Goldsman wrote the script and Javier Bardem is set to star.

Unfortunately, there are big problems and the planned September start date has already been pushed back. The studio is now worried about the budget and may consider handing the franchise to another studio, which could mean the end of "The Dark Tower."

Many believe that Howard and Goldsman will not let the project die and some of the options are for Goldsman to take it to Warner Bros, which may fund it the films on its own or with Universal. At this point, the May 17th, 2013 is still in place, but that may change very soon. Stay tuned.

Keanu Reeves in Talks for Live-Action "Akira" Film

Posted: May 6th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Keanu Reeves in Talks for Live-Action Akira Film
Over the years, actors like Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, James Franco, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Fassbender, Zac Efron and Robert Pattinson have been attached to the live-action "Akira" film, to be directed by Albert Hughes (The Book of Eli).

THR has now learned that Warner Bros is in talks with Keanu Reeves to play Kaneda, the gang leader. An offer has yet to be made, but sources claim that negotiations are going well.

In the script, the action moves from Neon-Tokyo to New Manhattan, where a biker gang leader tries to save his best friend from a medical experiment that threatens to unleash destructive powers.

The studio believes that bringing Reeves on board would give the project a better chance or getting another A-lister to take the role of Tetsuo, the best friend.

Ginnifer Goodwin and John Krasinski Interview SOMETHING BORROWED

In the romantic dramedy Something Borrowed, actress Ginnifer Goodwin plays Rachel, a talented attorney at a top New York law firm. She is a loyal friend who is generous, much to her own detriment, when it comes to her best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson). When Rachel unexpectedly reveals to Darcy’s fiancĂ©, Dex (Colin Egglesfield), that she’s had a crush on him since their time in law school, one thing leads to another and Rachel finds herself caught between her life-long friendship with Darcy, and the love of her life.
At the press day, Ginnifer Goodwin and her co-star John Krasinski, who often is the voice of reason in the film, talked about the challenge of finding sympathy for characters doing very unlikeable things, why some friendships just aren’t meant to be, what songs they danced to in front of the mirror when they were kids, and the difference between exploring a character for film and for television. John also talked about his role in The Muppets, and Ginnifer talked about her ABC pilot Once Upon a Time, in which she plays Snow White. Check out what they had to say after the jump:

Bruce Willis to Reteam with 50 Cent for FIRE WITH FIRE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

Hey, remember that trailer we showed you in March for the awful-looking Bruce Willis/50 Cent thriller Setup?  It may have looked laughably-bad to all of us, but apparently Willis and Fiddy had a fun time working together because they’re re-teaming for another indie crime flick.  Variety reports that Willis and 50 Cent (I was going to simply say “actors”, but then I realized that would only be half-true) along with Josh Duhamel will star in Fire with Fire.  The story “centers on a fireman in the witness protection program. When he’s threatened by the man he plans to testify against, he takes matters into his own hands to save the love of his life.”  There’s no justice quite like fireman justice.  Just ask Howie Long.  David Barrett will direct from a script by Tom Conner.
Voltage Films will be selling the rights to the film at Cannes next week.  Filming is expected to begin on June 27th with an almost-inevitable-direct-to-DVD release date to be announced at a later date.

New Trailer for GREEN LANTERN Starring Ryan Reynolds

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for the superhero tentpole Green Lantern.  Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the first human ever selected for the Green Lantern Corps: “A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers.”  The movie also stars Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Angela Bassett, and Tim Robbins.  Martin Campbell (Edge of Darkness) directed the comic book adaptation.
This trailer offers everything you’ve been waiting to see: character moments for Hector Hammond (Sarsgaard), Carol Ferris (Lively), Kilowog (voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan), and first looks at Amanda Walker (Bassett) and the Guardians of the Universe.  I’ll admit that the CG on the Guardians looks kind of crappy, but there’s so much potentially great stuff in this trailer that I’m willing to suspend by disbelief a little further.  I have no idea if this film is going to work, but I admire its ambition. Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Green Lantern opens in 3D on June 17.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

Malin Akerman Joins ROCK OF AGES

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 4th, 2011

Adam Shankman’s musical Rock of Ages has been searching for months to find its “Constance”, the journalist who sleeps with decadent rock star Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) even though she’s supposed to be writing an expose about him.  The project courted Anne Hathaway and Amy Adams, but both actresses passed on the film after they were offered roles in superhero movies (Hathaway for The Dark Knight Rises and Adams for Man of Steel).  Today, Rock of Ages finally has its Constance as Deadline reports that Malin Akerman will take the role.  In addition to Tom Cruise, Akerman will be joining Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Diego Boneta, Julianne Hough, Bryan Cranston, and Catherine Zeta Jones.
Rock of Ages is the latest film to fall into Akerman’s packed schedule.  She’s currently shooting Medallion with Nicolas Cage, she replaced Lindsay Lohan in Inferno: The Linda Lovelace Story, she’s co-starring in the romantic comedy The Giant Mechanical Man, and she’s starring opposite Ethan Hawke in the spy thriller The Numbers Station.   Akerman can currently be seen in theaters co-starring in the war drama The Bang Bang Club and she has two more films coming out later this year: the indie crime thriller Criminal Empire for Dummy’s and the David Wain comedy WanderlustRock of Ages is due out June 1, 2012.

Danny Boyle to Direct TRANCE before the 2012 Summer Olympics

Danny Boyle will be directing the opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, but that doesn’t mean there’s no time to shoot another movie.  It’s just something that can be squeezed in, like a trip to the grocery store or picking up stamps.  Deadline reports that Boyle will shoot Trance, which is about “an art heist gone wrong” and has the same “dark, sexy, hard-edged tone” of Boyle’s early films Shallow Grave and Trainspotting.  Boyle plans to shoot the film this September in London, but once he’s finished, he’s going to put Trance on the shelf.  Then he’ll switch gears, turn his attention to the Olympics, and then in August 2012, he’ll pick the film up again with an eye towards releasing it in March 2013.
Producing partner Christian Colson (Slumdog Millionaire) is on board and the duo are in talks with Pathe and Fox Searchlights for funding and distribution.  The feature is budgeted in the mid-teens, which has worked out well for Boyle on his last two films.  Slumdog Millionaire cost $15 million and grossed $377 million worldwide while 127 Hours cost $18 million and raked in a modest but still profitable $57 million worldwide.

One of the best films I’ve seen so far this year is the haunting and emotionally complex drama Martha Marcy May Marlene.  Now Fox Searchlight has released a trailer for the flick and it does a good job of selling how the story jumps around in time and showing the fractured psyche of its protagonist (Elisabeth Olsen in a breakthrough performance).  I also love how it closes out with John Hawkes singing and giving you a hint of how disturbing he is in this film.  I honestly believe he’s headed towards another Oscar nomination for his work in this film.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and click here to read my Sundance review.  Martha Marcy May Marlene will play at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.  It opens in the U.S. on October 7th.
