 Clips From The Lincoln Lawyer

published: 2011-02-24 17:53:21 Author: Josh Tyler
Marisa Tomei’s career has undergone a renaissance in recent years, mostly because she seems willing to show up in just about any movie to play “that girl who gets naked and sleeps with the protagonist”. It works for her. Made her more respectable than ever. Those jokes about her My Cousin Vinnie Oscar have even sort of stopped. Hollywood starlets take note: Getting naked on screen may be the best thing you’ll ever do.

Amongst these new clips from The Lincoln Lawyer you’ll see Tomei doing her girl who strips for the hero thing again, along with scenes involving Ryan Phillipe being a total creep, and clip in which a long-haired William H. Macy pretty much spoils the plot of the entire film. Maybe the marketing minds behind the film figure that since the movie’s based on the book, spoilers don’t matter, but if you haven’t read the book yet and don’t want to be spoiled, you might want to skip the third of the three clips below. If you watch, I’ll see you afterward for a quick breakdown of what we just saw.
While all of the Lincoln Lawyer’s
trailers have been pretty wishy-washy on the subject of what’s really going on here, is Ryan Phillipe guilty or isn’t he, these clips make the whole thing pretty clear. “You’ve got one client in jail, for what your other client did,” explains William H. Macy’s character. There’s your conflict. How will Matthew McConaughey handle it? Normally he’d take care of business by ripping his shirt off, but this seems like a better, more focused Matt McC. He’s intense, kind of like back in the days when everyone still thought he could act.

The Lincoln Lawyer looks good and, if you’re looking to bone up on the film, check out our dedicated Lincoln Lawyer page in the
BFD.

Twilight Director Chris Weitz's A Better Life Trailer Drops

published: 2011-02-24 17:56:22 Author: Mack Rawden
Most people know Chris Weitz from his directorial work on Twilight: New Moon, American Pie and The Golden Compass, but he was also brilliant as the lead opposite Mike White in the underseen Chuck and Buck. Personally, I'd like to see him act a little more, but if it comes at the expense of time in the director's chair, I'm not sure I could support it. When given the right subject matter, see About A Boy, he's more than capable, and his newest is looking like his best offering yet.

Entitled A Better Life, it's the story of an immigrant and his son trying to rise the social ladder. The father, played by Demian Bichir, has his prized truck stolen, but without a license, he can't turn to the police. His son agrees to help him find it, but he spends most of his energies wrestling between the life his father wants for him and the local hoodlums offering the promises of a better life. Here's a look at the trailer put up this afternoon by
The Los Angeles Times, click over there for even more on the film…
There aren't enough nice things I can say about this trailer. Moving and well put together, it's the right balance between action, plot and quiet exchanges, giving the viewer a good sense of the story without rehashing blow by blow. There are plenty of other genres I'd take ahead of immigrant stories, which may be why I was so pleasantly surprised by how brilliant this looks. Demian Bichir was wonderful in Weeds, but here, playing a different kind of role, he really seems to shine, as does Jose Julian as his goodhearted but confused son.

There's no telling how wide of a release this will eventually get, but if the final product is half as good as this trailer, A Better Life deserves to make its way outside Los Angeles and New York.

Ewan McGregor Joins The Cast Of Jack The Giant Killer

published: 2011-02-24 18:00:52 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Bryan Singer's Jack The Giant Killer has made some major headway in recent weeks in terms of building its cast. First it was announced that Stanley Tucci would be playing the villain and John Kassir and Bill Nighy would be doing the voice the two-headed leader of the giants. Then it was finally revealed that Nicholas Hoult, who will be playing Beast in this summer's X-Men: First Class, would be playing the title role. The biggest role that remains is the princess that Jack must rescue, but that's on the backburner for now as Ewan McGregor has joined the cast.
THR reports that the actor once known as Renton in Danny Boyle's Trainspotting and Obi-Wan in the Star Wars prequels has signed on to play the leader of the king's guard who ventures with Jack to kill giants and rescue the kidnapped princess. The search continues to find an actress that will play the lead female role, but two very much at the forefront are Adelaide Kane (Power Rangers RPM), and Eleanor Tomlinson (Alice in Wonderland). The long-delayed film is set to go into production this March in London.

Despite my very public dislike of the Star Wars prequels I have always loved McGregor as an actor and he's certainly a fine addition to what's shaping up to be a great cast.

Simon Pegg Says Star Trek 2 Has A Script

published: 2011-02-24 15:08:42 Author: Josh Tyler
It’s been nothing but bad news for Star Trek fans, eager for the next installment in JJ Abrams’ epically fun franchise reboot. Though the sequel has been promised, none of the people involved have really been working on it. As recently as a month ago Trek director JJ Abrams told everyone here that they still didn’t really have a script. Now, suddenly, maybe they do.

A short time ago Simon Pegg, who played Scotty in the reboot,
tweeted this message: “Word on the bridge is the new script is AMAZEBALLS and I cannot wait!!!!!”

It’s hard to know exactly what “word on the bridge” means. Has Pegg just been reading random internet rumors about a theoretical script or has he actually talked to JJ Abrams and hear that they have something really written? We’ve sent out inquiries, we’ll let you know if we get an answer.

Granted, it’s not much to go on, but it’s the first positive Star Trek: The Next news we’ve had… well… ever. I’ll take it. Thanks for keeping hope alive Scotty!

But things are not as they seem and the disgraced Kendra, a witch masquerading as a high school student, enacts the perfect revenge. She transforms Kyle into someone as unattractive on the outside as he is on the inside. Now he has one year to find someone to love him, or he will remain “Beastly” forever. To break the spell, Kyle must discover a beauty who can see past the surface. His only hope, a quiet classmate he never noticed named Lindy (Vanessa Hudgens), may be his best chance to prove that love is never ugly.

***New Posters for SOMETHING BORROWED and A BETTER LIFE (Formerly THE GARDENER)

New Posters for SOMETHING BORROWED and A BETTER LIFE (Formerly THE GARDENER)

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 1st, 2011

We have new posters for a pair of films I’m really rooting for in 2011.  The first is Something Borrowed, an adaptation of the first in a series of novels from Emily Giffin.  Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield, and John Krasinski star.  Hudson’s name is a big red flag, but there are hints that Something Borrowed could be more than your average romantic comedy.
The second is A Better Life (formerly titled The Gardener), the latest from Chris Weitz.  For a brief minute, Weitz was the promising co-director behind the charming About a Boy before he was swallowed up by the big budget filmmaking of The Golden Compass and New MoonA Better Life scales things back down to the indie level: a gardener (Demian Bichir) and his son (Jose Julian) scour Los Angeles for a stolen truck vital to their livelihood in this tale inspired by The Bicycle Thief.  Hit the jump to view both posters.
Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door) directs Something Borrowed from a script by Jennie Snyder (90210).  Something Borrowed opens on May 6.  Click for high resolution.

As she waits to enter her 30th birthday party, Rachel White (Ginnifer Goodwin) can’t escape the feeling that her life has not turned out like she thought it would. Sure, she has a good job at a prestigious Manhattan law firm, but she works long hours and her boss is a tyrant.
She has her childhood best friend, the beautiful and vivacious Darcy (Kate Hudson), but seeing her flirt with her handsome fiancé is just another reminder that at the end of the party, like every other night, she’ll be going home alone. Except this time…she doesn’t. Rachel wakes up the following morning next to Dex (Colin Egglesfield), her law school study partner…and Darcy’s fiancé. Both of them are horrified. How could they let this happen?
They try to move on, but as the wedding approaches Rachel begins to realize that it wasn’t a mistake after all and maybe Darcy isn’t the friend she thought she was.
Now Rachel has to make a painful choice: her best friend or the love of her life?

A Better Life is due sometime in 2011 courtesy of Summit Entertainment.

Here’s the synopsis seen at the American Film Market:
Carlos Galindo (Demian Bichir), a simple, decent, 40-year-old Mexican man, doesn’t ask much from life – just to keep tending the yards of L.A.’s wealthy and to give his estranged son  Luis (Jose Julian) a better life than he had. But when a business opportunity that would have allowed him to take control of his destiny is stolen from under his nose, his life is thrown into chaos. Directed by Academy Award nominee Chris Weitz, A Better Life is an original, moving and, at times, heart-pounding drama that follows father and son as they scour L.A. in search of a stolen pickup truck that represents their only chance of a better life and of healing the growing riff between them.
When Galindo’s boss offers to sell him his pickup truck and gardening business, Galindo has no choice but to refuse – even though it will mean going back to begging for work on a street corner. He simply can’t afford it. But when his sister Anita (Dolores Heredia) comes through with a last-minute loan, Galindo suddenly finds himself with a shot at the American Dream,. Not for long, though. On the first day of his new life, while he is high in a palm tree pruning fronds, hew newly hired helper, Santiago (Carlos Linares), makes off with the pickup – and with it, Galindo’s shot at a better life for himself and Luis.
What follows is a colorful, often nail-biting odyssey as Galindo and Luis make their way across an urban landscape as full of surprises as it is diverse, piecing together clues as to the whereabouts of Santiago and the pickup. The stakes could not be higher: like the new green fronds on the palm trees Galindo prunes and so carefully leaves intact, Luis is extremely vulnerable – always in danger or falling into the gang-banger lifestyle that surrounds their East L.A. home. That’s something that Galindo will do anything to prevent.
Forever tied to the Twilight fanbase, Weitz earnestly pitched his new movie to the devoted fans via Cinematical:
“Look, let’s be honest: There’s not a single vampire, not a werewolf or star-crossed romance in sight. Jose is quite a heartthrob but just doesn’t have Jacob’s abs. Demian plays an amazing Dad but doesn’t have to deal with quite the same issues as Charlie Swan. But if a fan of Twilight came away from watching New Moon with a sense that that movie has been done well by me and my crew, they might be interested in seeing another film that deals with some pretty intense feelings and, frankly, packs a tremendous emotional wallop. I’ll put it this way: I bet that Bella would go see A Better of Life. I bet she’d make the drive out to Port Angeles. And I bet she’d like it.”
