Cameron Diaz is a naughty teacher
02.23.11
After the jump, it’s the red-band trailer for Bad Teacher, starring Cam’ron Diaz and Justin Timberlake  I read this script a while back and really liked it, but then Sony hired Cameron Diaz to play the lead and her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake to play her love interest, the kind of decision that only makes sense if you’re a studio exec.  On the plus side, Jake Kasdan is directing (of Orange County and the criminally underrated Walk Hard) and Jason Segel has a supporting role.  Maybe I can still pretend to buy Cameron Diaz in this role long enough to enjoy it?  It’s going to be hard, but if I can get Burnsy to stop feeding me popcorn with his big man paws like he usually does, I might be able to manage.

Early Edition: Ewan McGregor Ready to Be a 'Giant Killer'

Posted Feb 25th 2011 8:00AM
Fee fie foe fum! Ewan McGregor is in talks to join the long-gestating Bryan Singer production of 'Jack the Giant Killer,' a modern day fairy tale in which a long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened when a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess. The movie is finally taking off -- with shooting scheduled to begin in March in London -- and several key roles have been cast: Nicholas Hoult ('Skins') will play Jack and Stanley Tucci will play the villain, an advisor to the king with designs on usurping power. Bill Nighy and John Kassir will play the two-headed leader of the giants. McGregor will play the leader of the king's giant-fighting elite guards. Still to be cast: the princess. [The Hollywood Reporter]

We all know that 'Toy Story 3' was the top-grossing film of the year, both in North America and overseas (with $1.062 billion worldwide) -- followed by 'Alice in Wonderland' ($1.023 billion), 'Inception' ($817 million), 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1' ($824.1 million) and 'Shrek Forever After' ($750 million). But what was the top-grossing independent film of the year? That honor goes to 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,' which took in $698.3 million, according to the Independent Film & Television Alliance. 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' was second with $270.7 million, followed by 'The Expendables' with $228.4 million worldwide. [

February 24, 2011

Ewan McGregor is in negotiations for a part in Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer, New Line Cinema has confirmed to ComingSoon.net.

The project, a fantasy drama that re-teams Singer with The Usual Suspects and Valkyrie screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, is said to take an adult look at the "Jack and the Beanstalk" legend. When a princess is kidnapped, a long-standing peace between men and giants becomes threatened, and a young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giant kingdom to rescue her.

The cast already includes Nicholas Hoult in the title role with Bill Nighy, Stanley Tucci and John Kassir co-starring. As production is expected to begin sometime next month, the full cast should be announced shortly.

First Look at James Franco in Rise of the Apes

Source: 20th Century Fox
February 24, 2011

20th Century Fox has provided ComingSoon.net with a first look at James Franco in Rise of the Apes, opening in theaters on November 23. Franco, who is co-hosting the Oscars on Sunday with Anne Hathaway, stars in the Rupert Wyatt-directed film with John Lithgow, Freida Pinto, Andy Serkis, Brian Cox, Tom Felton and David Oyelowo.

Oscar-winning visual effects house Weta Digital – employing certain of the groundbreaking technologies developed for Avatar – will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors.

Set in present day San Francisco,
Rise of the Apes is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

UPDATE: Jake Gyllenhaal And Garrett Hedlund Among Actors Shortlisted For The Bourne Legacy

published: 2011-02-24 19:40:21 Author: Eric Eisenberg
UPDATE: Deadline reports that Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, and Benjamin Walker are also in the mix for the part.

One advantage that the Jason Bourne franchise had for its last two sequels is that it didn't have to worry about finding their lead actor. Matt Damon was the super assassin with amnesia and everything was right with the world. But now that Universal is making a fourth installment without Damon, the mission has begun to find the actor that can step into his shoes.
Variety is reporting that a shortlist for director Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy has been leaked and contains five names, four of whom shouldn't really come as a surprise. These stars include Jake Gyllenhaal, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, and Kellan Lutz. Strangely, the other name on the list is Tobey Maguire, who, with his skinny frame made, for a good Spider-Man, but might be a little out of place as a CIA-trained killing machine. While the article isn't specific as to which names belong where, it says that the list contains both actors Gilroy is interested in for the part and actors the studio is pushing (it's also worth noting that Universal wouldn't comment on this list). Making the casting process all the more interesting, Gilroy wants to screentest all of the actors, meaning that it's entirely possible that an unknown name could still swing in and take the part. The film is currently scheduled to begin production this Spring.

Though I understand that Gilroy is as much a part of the Bourne franchise as Matt Damon or Paul Greengrass, having written all three previous films, I still find it hard wrapping my mind around the idea of a Bourne movie without Jason Bourne. If you can't make a Bond movie without Bond, why can you make a Bourne movie without Bourne? It would be nice to see them work it out and have Damon return to the role sometime down the line, but I will remain skeptical until given reason why I shouldn't be.
