Demian Bichir in Talks to Join Oliver Stone’s SAVAGES

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 9th, 2011

Director Oliver Stone is filling out the cast for his adaptation of Don Winslow’s Savages. Variety reports that Demian Bichir (Che, Weeds) is in talks to join an increasingly impressive cast that now includes Benecio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Emile Hirsch, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman. The story centers on two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins (Kitsch and Johnson) who encounter a world of trouble when their shared girlfriend (Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel. Hayek plays the leader of the cartel, Del Toro plays her right-hand-man, and Bichir is in talks to play Hayek’s two-timing attorney.
Stone has revised the script that was written by Winslow and Shane Salerno. The book’s publisher, Simon & Schuester, recently commissioned Winslow to write a prequel to the book, so if Savages is a success at the box office, we may be seeing a follow-up. Despite Stone’s lackluster work as of late, this fantastic cast gives me high hopes for the film. Production on Savages is scheduled to start on July 6th. First Trailer for LUCKY Starring Colin Hanks

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: June 9th, 2011

The first trailer for the indie comedy Lucky has been released. The film stars Colin Hanks as an unassuming young man who wins the lottery and marries the girl of his dreams. Oh, and he also likes to kill people (experience should come in handy for his arc on the upcoming season of Dexter). The trailer’s actually alright. At first it seems a little “straight-to-DVD,” but once the premise comes across, Lucky looks like it could be a pretty good quirky comedy. I really like Hanks, and a serial-killer indie comedy actually seems like a good fit for his comedic style. In addition to Hanks, the cast includes Jeffrey Tambor, Ann-Margaret, Mimi Rogers and Ari Graynor. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. http://collider.com/lucky-movie-trailer/95762/

Diego Luna in Talks for Neill Blomkamp’s ELYSIUM; Cyndi Lauper Joins THE LAST BEAT

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 9th, 2011

We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this evening. First up, Variety reports that Diego Luna is in talks to join director Neill Blomkamp’s (District 9) highly anticipated upcoming sci-fi flick Elysium. The cast now includes Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura, Sharlto Copley and Alice Braga. Plot details are under wraps, but Foster recently stated that she plays the head of an alien planet, and we know that the story is set 100 years in the future on a distant planet. Blomkamp wrote and will direct the film which is set to begin filming this summer. Elysium hits theaters on March 1st, 2013.
Additionally, the perpetually crazy-haired Cyndi Lauper has joined the cast of Robert Saitzyk’s music-centered flick The Last Beat. Written and directed by Saitzyk, the film centers on “a rock star who goes to Paris in a search for a more artistic existence  as a poet and writer.” THR reports that the original soundtrack will feature songs inspired by 70’s music (from Rock to French Pop), and filming is set to commence in Paris this summer. The cast includes Shawn Andrews (Dazed and Confused), French actress Virginie Ledoyen, Cameron Richardson (Hard Breakers) and Seymour Cassel (The Royal Tenenbaums).

Jason Bateman Eyes Role Opposite Vince Vaughn in the Comedy INSANE LAWS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 9th, 2011

Jason Bateman is a very busy man. He’s got two comedies opening this summer, The Change-Up and Horrible Bosses, plus he has to keep everyone updated on the Arrested Development movie. Well now he’s in early negotiations to join Vince Vaughn in the comedy Insane Laws. Marking the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up), the film focuses on two best friends whose lives are impacted when their kids begin dating. The situation is exacerbated when when Vaughn’s character’s daughter becomes pregnant.
Deadline reports that the actors recently did a read-through of the script, and that production could begin as soon as the fall. Garelick co-wrote The Break-Up with Vaughn, and performed extensive rewrites on The Hangover (director Todd Phillips claims Garelick was responsible for the lion’s share of the finished script). I think the comedic stylings of Bateman and Vaughn could make for some fantastic on-screen chemistry, so I’m hoping everything comes together on this project. Horrible Bosses opens July 8th, while The Change-Up hits theaters August 5th.

A couple of new images from the Cold War thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy have hit the web. Directed by Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In), the adaptation of John Le Carre’s novel centers on semi-retired agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) who is pulled out of semi-retirement to ferret out a Soviet mole within MI6. In addition to Oldman, the phenomenal cast includes Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, John Hurt and Toby Jones. When speaking with Steve earlier this year, Oldman said that his part in this film is probably the greatest role he’s ever played. Needless to say, this one should definitely be on your radar. Hit the jump to check out Tom Hardy in a really bad wig, as well as a synopsis of Le Carre’s novel.

The international trailer for One Day has been released. Directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education), the adaptation of the David Nicholls book stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. While the first U.S. trailer that was released was a little too “Lifetime Original Movie” for my liking, this international trailer seems to give a better feel for how the finished film will be. I’m intrigued by the story, and I’ve been told that Nicholls’ book is fantastic. Hit the jump to watch the international trailer yourself. One Day hits theaters August 19th. http://collider.com/one-day-international-trailer/93575/

Alice Braga Joins ELYSIUM

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 29th, 2011

In the eyes of casting directors, there is something very science-fictional about Alice Braga: I Am LegendBlindnessRepo MenPredators.  Falling in line, writer/director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) will employ Braga to bring his vision of the future to life in Elysium.  (Initially there was some Braga confusion.  Deadline first reported that it was Sonia Braga who joined the film — the post has since been updated to reflect that it is in fact Sonia’s niece Alice who signed on.)
Braga joins Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura, and Sharlto Copley in Elysium, scheduled for release on March 1, 2013.  The plot is a mystery for now, by the “unabashedly big movie” is said to take place 100 years in the future on another planet.  Foster recently confirmed she will play “the head of an alien planet,” if that offers a clue about what you’re in for. http://collider.com/alice-braga-elysium/93564/

Thomas Jane Too White for Sylvester Stallone's "Headshot"

Posted: May 30th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Back in April, it was reported that Thomas Jane (The Mist, Punisher) has signed on to star alongside Sylvester Stallone in "Headshot" crime thriller, to be directed by Walter Hills (48 Hrs, The Warriors).

Filming was set to begin this month, but Warner Bros is now looking to replace Jane with a more "ethnic" actor. The studio believes that with a minority in the role, the film will be able to reach a wider audience, which results in bigger box office. Both Stallone and Hill would like to keep Jane, but that may not happen.

In "Headshot," Stallone's character teams with a young NYPD detective (Jane) in a high-stakes investigation that leads from the back alleys of New Orleans all the way to Washington, DC. The unlikely duo, brought together by two vicious murders, take on all who stand in their way, and are willing to sacrifice everything to exact revenge.

**Elysium Sets March 2013 Release Date **Elysium Adds Wagner Moura as the Villain **Beginners Poster

Elysium Sets March 2013 Release Date
Sony Pictures has set a March 8, 2013 release date for Neill Blomkamp's upcoming sci-fi thriller Elysium.

This news comes hot off the heels of today's earlier announcement that Brazilian actor Wagner Moura will play the villain. Little is known about the plot for Elysium, other than it will be set on another planet and will deal with social issues. Matt Damon will star as a con man, while Sharlto Copley co-stars.

Neill Blomkamp is directing Elysium from his own original screenplay. It isn't clear when production will start, although, with a 2013 release date locked in, it might be awhile before this project goes before cameras.

As of now, Elysium has the March 8 release date all to itself.

Elysium comes to theaters March 8th, 2013 and stars Sharlto Copley, Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura. The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp.

Elysium Adds Wagner Moura as the Villain
Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, who stars in the Elite Squad movie series, has joined the cast of Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi thriller Elysium.

Wagner Moura will play the main villain in this mysterious adventure; a man who has a bizarre sense of humor. Little else is known about the story, although it is said that Matt Damon will play a con man, with Sharlto Copley also starring. Jodie Foster is reportedly attached to the project still, although she revealed last month she isn't yet signed for Elysium.

Neill Blomkamp will direct Elysium from his own screenplay. It isn't clear when production will start yet, although a late 2012 release date is being targeted.

Wagner Moura will make his Hollywood debut with Elysium after starring in 2008's Elite Squad and last year's Elite Squad 2, which was the top-grossing movie in Brazil.

Elysium comes to theaters March 8th, 2013 and stars Sharlto Copley, Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura. The film is directed by Neill Blomkamp.

Beginners Poster
Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, and Mélanie Laurent star in director Mike Mills's upcoming dramatic comedy Beginners. Focus Features has released the first poster, which you can check out below.

Beginners Poster
From writer/director Mike Mills comes a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments. "Beginners" imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Golden Globe Award nominee Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Mélanie Laurent of "Inglourious Basterds") only months after his father Hal (Academy Award nominee Christopher Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who - following 44 years of marriage - came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal's new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they'd ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.

Beginners comes to theaters June 3rd, 2011 and stars Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Mélanie Laurent, Goran Visnjic, Bill Oberst Jr., Mary Page Keller, Jodi Long, Kai Lennox. The film is directed by Mike Mills.

Jodie Foster Joins Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley in Neill Blomkamp’s ELYSIUM

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 3rd, 2011

Jodie Foster has joined Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley in Elysium, the new film from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp.  Deadline reports that although the project hasn’t been shopped to the studios yet, Foster is now on board.  Plot details, however, remain under wraps and all we know about the film is that it takes place in the distant future and on another planet.
Foster recently wrapped her third directing effort, The Beaver, where she co-stars with Mel Gibson and Anton Yelchin.  She’s also attached to star in Roman Polanski’s God of Carnage with Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Matt Dillon, and John C. Reilly, as well as Park Chan-Wook’s U.S. debut, Stoker.

James Franco to Direct Adaptations of AS I LAY DYING and BLOOD MERIDIAN?

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 3rd, 2011

James Franco is reportedly gearing up to direct adaptations of William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying and Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian.  According to Showbiz411, Franco has written a screenplay for As I Lay Dying and has been in discussions with the Faulkner estate.  Franco tells Showbiz411 that this is the project “he’s most attached to” and hopes to get it off the ground next spring.  Franco is also planning to adapt Blood Meridian in 2012.
Hit the jump for a brief synopsis of both books along with other projects Franco has on the horizon. [There's been an update on this story regarding Blood Meridian.  Hit the jump for more.]
In addition to attending Yale and the Rhode Island School of Design, Franco is also keeping busy with the following projects:
Franco will be seen later this year in the fantasy-stoner comedy Your Highness and the Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes.  He’s also co-hosting the Oscars with Anne Hathaway.
Here’s the synopsis for As I Lay Dying [via Amazon]:
One of William Faulkner’s finest novels, As I Lay Dying was originally published in 1930, and remains a captivating and stylistically innovative work. The story revolves around a grim yet darkly humorous pilgrimage, as Addie Bundren’s family sets out to fulfill her last wish: to be buried in her native Jefferson, Mississippi, far from the miserable backwater surroundings of her married life. Told through multiple voices, it vividly brings to life Faulkner’s imaginary South, one of the great invented landscapes in all of literature, and is replete with the poignant, impoverished, violent, and hypnotically fascinating characters that were his trademark.
And here’s the synopsis for Blood Meridian [via Amazon]:
An epic novel of the violence and depravity that attended America’s westward expansion, Blood Meridian brilliantly subverts the conventions of the Western novel and the mythology of the “wild west.” Based on historical events that took place on the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, it traces the fortunes of the Kid, a fourteen-year-old Tennessean who stumbles into the nightmarish world where Indians are being murdered and the market for their scalps is thriving.
Update: According to The Playlist, Blood Meridian producer Scott Rudin sent an e-mail to Anne Thompson strongly downplaying Showbiz411’s story, although he doesn’t outright deny it.
