HBO Picks Up Armando Iannucci’s VEEP Comedy Series Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus
by Ethan Anderton Posted: April 18th, 2011
Delivering one of the best political satire comedies I’ve seen in years, In the Loop writer and director Armando Iannucci just had his new comedy series Veep picked up by HBO. Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the series follows former Senator Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus), who becomes Vice President, only to discover the job is nothing like she expected, but everything she was warned about. The cast also includes In the Loop star Anna Chlumsky, Tony Hale (Arrested Development) Matt Walsh (Outsourced) and more.
Iannucci says, “I’m thrilled more than anyone is legally entitled to be. HBO is the dream network to make television for, and I’m excited to be working with such a superb and funny cast headed by the uber-superb-and-funny Julia Louis-Dreyfus. If making season one of Veep is as much fun as making the pilot, then I can die chuckling. Plus, we get to say rude words.” Since In the Loop was filled with great comedy and colorful language, this sounds great to me. Hit the jump for the full press release with more details.

James Franco and Winona Ryder to Star in Psychological Thriller THE STARE
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 18th, 2011
James Franco and Winona Ryder will star in Jay Anania’s The Stare, the first feature funded by Waterstone Entertainment, a new producing/financing company. Deadline reports that the Ryder would play a playwright who “finds her mind beginning to warp as she struggles to launch her next production. She’s plagued by dreams and visions of being watched, but can’t decide if she’s at the center of a manipulative plot or simply losing her grip on reality.” So it sounds like Black Swan but this time it’s a writer who’s going mad and Ryder gets to be the star. As for Franco, he’ll play an actor who’s in the playwright’s production. Filming is set to begin on May 6th in New York.
Franco, who is one of Anania’s students at NYU where he heads the graduate directing program, previously starred in Anania’s Shadows & Lies and will serve as one of the producers on The Stare. Presumably, Franco will be able to get in this film before moving on to star in Sam Raimi’s Oz, The Great and Powerful As for Ryder, she’ll be one of the voices in Tim Burton’s 3D stop-motion remake of Frankenweenie.

Matt Reeves Takes Another Bite out of Vampire Flicks with THE PASSAGE
by Matt Goldberg Posted: April 18th, 2011
Director Matt Reeves (Let Me In) apparently hasn’t gotten his fill of bloodsuckers because he’s signed on to direct the vampire flick The Passage. But unlike the sad, meditative, personal drama of Let Me In, The Passage is more along the infected lines of 28 Days Later and The Stand. According to Deadline, the story—based on the novel by Justin Cronin—centers on the government attempting a cure for cancer after a group of terminal patients become healthy after being subjected to bat bites in South America. But their experimentation leads to the creation of nearly indestructible, telepathic vampire masters that begin infecting the populace. Moral of the story: don’t try to cure cancer.
Last September, we reported that screenwriter John Logan (Rango) would be handling the script, but now Reeves will oversee a rewrite by a yet-to-be-determined replacement since Logan is busy on the new James Bond flick. Last week, Reeves also signed on to write and direct an adaptation of the short story 8 O’Clock in the Morning. It’s unknown which project he’ll direct first although The Passage has a bit of a head start since there’s already a finished script. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the Justin Cronin’s novel.

Thomas Jane Enters HEADSHOT with Sylvester Stallone
by Jason Barr Posted: April 18th, 2011
Last week, we brought you the news that Walter Hill (The Warriors) will be directing Sylvester Stallone in the action/thriller Headshot. Today, JoBlo reports that Thomas Jane will be starring alongside Sly as an NYPD detective. Per their report, Jane dropped the news of his involvement while appearing on their “Arrow in the Head” podcast and claims that it is indeed a done deal. Production on Headshot is expected to begin next month in New Orleans.
The script, initially penned by Alessandro Camon (The Messengers) and currently undergoing rewrites by Hill, focuses on a New Orleans-based hitman (Stallone) who shares a common goal of revenge with the aforementioned NYPD detective (Jane) as they are connected by two gruesome murders. As the story goes, the pair “take on all who stand in their way, and are willing to sacrifice everything to exact revenge.” With Stallone, Hill, and now Jane on board, color me excited for Headshot.

Ryan Gosling Will NOT Star in THE LONE RANGER
by Adam Chitwood Posted: April 18th, 2011
Well, so much for that pairing. Just a few days ago it was reported that Ryan Gosling was in talks to star in Disney’s The Lone Ranger opposite Johnny Depp. Now it appears the actor won’t be taking on the title role after all. The initial story stressed that the deal was far from closed and Gosling was having trouble lining up his schedule, and now EW confirms that the actor was ultimately unable to fit the project in.
Directed by Gore Verbinski, The Lone Ranger is set to star Depp as Tonto, with producers currently searching for the right actor to take on the role of Tonto’s masked companion. Depp has previously mentioned George Clooney and Brad Pitt as possible contenders for the part. Shooting is set to begin this fall.

5 Movie Clips from THE DILEMMA
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: January 5th, 2011
Universal has released 5 movie clips from The Dilemma, a comedy from director Ron Howard which stars Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum, and Queen Latifah. Vaughn plays a man who is distraught when he catches the wife (Ryder) of his best friend (James) cheating.
I didn’t love the trailer, but the cast is undeniably impressive. The bromance between Vaughn and James plays well in this footage, which bodes well for the film. Watch the clips after the jump.
-
The Dilemma opens on January 14th. Here’s the official synopsis:
http://collider.com/the-dilemma-movie-clips/68384/Vince Vaughn and Kevin James headline an all-star comedy from director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer about a man who finds out that what you don’t say to a friend is just as important as what you do. Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum and Queen Latifah join them in The Dilemma, a story of how far you can bend a brotherly bond before it snaps. Since college, confirmed bachelor Ronny (Vaughn) and happily married Nick (James) have been through thick and thin. Now partners in an auto design firm, the two pals are vying to land a dream project that would launch their company. With Ronny’s girlfriend, Beth (Connelly), and Nick’s wife, Geneva (Ryder), by their sides, they’re unbeatable. But Ronny’s world is turned upside down when he inadvertently sees Geneva out with another man and makes it his mission to get answers. As the amateur investigation dissolves his world into comic mayhem, he learns that Nick has a few secrets of his own. Now, with the clock ticking and pressure mounting on the biggest presentation of their careers, Ronny must decide how and when he will reveal the truth to his best friend.
Barbra Streisand in Talks to Star in GYPSY Remake
by Jason Barr Posted: January 5th, 2011
Here’s a little news for all the diehard Barbra Streisand fans who also happen to frequent Collider (I know you’re out there…somewhere…): the two-time Oscar-winner/eight-time Grammy-winner is in early negotiations with Warner Bros. to star in a remake of the 1962 film adaptation of the Broadway play Gypsy. While the project is currently without a writer and/or director, Streisand would star as Rose (the role turned by Rosalind Russell in the 1962 adaptation) if a deal is indeed struck.
For those unfamiliar with Gypsy (much like myself only one half-hour ago), both the play and the first film are based on the memoir of burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee. Per THR, each iteration focuses on Lee’s relationship with her mother, Rose (Streisand), who has “since become the prototype of a ’stage mom’ in pop culture.”

by Jason Barr Posted: January 5th, 2011
In what must be considered a big step in his up-hill struggle to gain credibility outside of Twilight circles, Robert Pattinson has joined David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis. Based on the Don Delillo novel of the same name, Cosmopolis has been adapted by Cronenberg and will follow a newlywed billionaire (Pattinson) over a 24 hour span in which he cheats on his wife, gets stalked, gets assaulted, and loses his fortune. Hopefully, at some point, he also catches a nap because that is one action-packed day.
In addition to Pattinson, Cosmopolis will also star Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard as Pattinson’s wife and Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti as one of Pattinson’s two stalkers. Per THR, Pattinson is filling the role abandoned by Colin Farrell so that the latter can shoot the Total Recall remake that is scheduled to begin filming in mid-May (around the same time as Cosmopolis). For more on the project, hit the jump to check out a plot summary for Delillo’s novel.
Here’s a plot summary for Delillo’s Cosmopolis [per Wikipedia]:
http://collider.com/robert-pattinson-cosmopolis/68321/Cosmopolis is the story of Eric Packer, a 28 year old multi-billionaire asset manager who makes an odyssey across midtown Manhattan in order to get a haircut. The stretch limo which adorns the cover of the book is richly described as highly technical and very luxurious, filled with television screens and computer monitors, bulletproofed and floored with Carrara marble. It is also cork lined to eliminate (though unsuccessfully, Packer notes) the intrusion of street noise.Like James Joyce’s Ulysses, Cosmopolis covers roughly one day of time and includes highly sexed women and the theme of father-son separation. Packer’s voyage is obstructed by various traffic jams caused by a presidential visit to the city, a funeral procession for a Sufi rap star and a full-fledged riot. Along the way, the hero has several chance meetings with his wife, seeing her in a taxi, a bookstore, and lying naked in the street, taking part in a movie as an extra. Meanwhile, Packer is stalked by two men, a comical “pastry assassin” and an unstable “credible threat”.Through the course of the day, the protagonist loses incredible amounts of money for his clients by betting against the rise of the yen, a loss that parallels his own fall. Packer seems to relish being unburdened by the loss of so much money, even stopping to make sure he loses his wife’s fortune as well, to ensure his ruin is inevitable.

Cloud Atlas is based on a book by the same name, which features stories spanning centuries and leading into the post apocalyptic future.

Gael Garcia Bernal to Play Boxer Roberto Duran in HANDS OF STONE; Al Pacino in Talks to Play Trainer
by Brendan Bettinger Posted:November 22nd, 2010
Gael Garcia Bernal (Letters to Juliet) will headline the Roberto Duran biopic Hands of Stone. Al Pacino is said to be circling the role of Ray Arcel, Duran’s trainer.
Duran boxed from age 16 (1968) to 50 (2002) under the nickname “Manos de piedra” (“Hands of Stone”), and won world titles at four different weights. He is perhaps best known for the “No Más Fight,” the November 1980 rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard for the welterweight championship. As the eighth round closed, Duran forfeited, telling the referee “No más” (“No more”). Said writer/director Jonathan Jakubowicz, “The infamous ‘No Más’ fight is the biggest enigma in the history of boxing. This movie will answer that enigma.” More after the jump.
Here’s how Wikipedia describes the controversy surrounding the fight:
“Duran claimed that he quit because of stomach cramps, which started to bother him in the fifth round. Duran said the cramps occurred because he took off weight too quickly and then ate too much after the morning weigh-in, but his manager, Carlos Eleta, said Duran always ate that way before a fight. ‘Duran didn’t quit because of stomach cramps,’ Eleta said. ‘He quit because he was embarrassed.’Duran’s stature in his home country, Panama, took a dramatic dive after the second Leonard fight. The first reaction was shock, followed by anger. Within hours after the fight, Duran’s commercials (in both Panama and the United States) were ordered off the air.”
Here’s a clip of the fight (Duran quits shortly after the 1:30 mark):
Fascinating. The man boxed professionally for five decades, which as far as I know is about the manliest thing ever accomplished. And yet his reputation was nearly undone by a momentary sign of weakness. I’ve checked in even before you factor in my Bernal love. I’m curious to see what Jakubowicz has to back up his claim of definitive closure, or if it’s mere grandstanding befitting of the sport of subject.
According to Variety, the production will shoot mostly in English in Panama and New York next spring.
Music Video for Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN
by Jason Barr Posted: November 22nd, 2010
A music video for Darren Aronofsky’s upcoming drama/thriller Black Swan is now available online. Beginning with the film’s fantastic trailer, followed-up by some very cool international posters, and now with this borderline insane, quick-hitting video, everything I’ve seen from the film thus far has successfully upped my anticipation for its release. Maybe it’s just me, but the club sequences in this most recent video are bringing to mind visuals from 1990’s Jacob’s Ladder. In my opinion, this is definitely a good thing.
Briefly, Black Swan stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis as dancers vying for the lead in a production of Swan Lake. In addition to Portman and Kunis, Black Swan also stars Winona Ryder, Vincent Cassel, and Barbara Hershey. The film hits U.S. theaters on December 3rd. Hit the jump to check out the music video as well as a synopsis for the film.
Here’s the video [click over to Apple for HD]:
Here’s the official synopsis:
Black Swan follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter’s professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.
