5 Movie Clips from THE DILEMMA

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: January 5th, 2011

Universal has released 5 movie clips from The Dilemma, a comedy from director Ron Howard which stars Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum, and Queen Latifah.  Vaughn plays a man who is distraught when he catches the wife (Ryder) of his best friend (James) cheating.
I didn’t love the trailer, but the cast is undeniably impressive.  The bromance between Vaughn and James plays well in this footage, which bodes well for the film.  Watch the clips after the jump.
-
The Dilemma opens on January 14th.  Here’s the official synopsis:
Vince Vaughn and Kevin James headline an all-star comedy from director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer about a man who finds out that what you don’t say to a friend is just as important as what you do. Jennifer Connelly, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum and Queen Latifah join them in The Dilemma, a story of how far you can bend a brotherly bond before it snaps. Since college, confirmed bachelor Ronny (Vaughn) and happily married Nick (James) have been through thick and thin. Now partners in an auto design firm, the two pals are vying to land a dream project that would launch their company. With Ronny’s girlfriend, Beth (Connelly), and Nick’s wife, Geneva (Ryder), by their sides, they’re unbeatable.
But Ronny’s world is turned upside down when he inadvertently sees Geneva out with another man and makes it his mission to get answers. As the amateur investigation dissolves his world into comic mayhem, he learns that Nick has a few secrets of his own. Now, with the clock ticking and pressure mounting on the biggest presentation of their careers, Ronny must decide how and when he will reveal the truth to his best friend.

Barbra Streisand in Talks to Star in GYPSY Remake

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 5th, 2011

Here’s a little news for all the diehard Barbra Streisand fans who also happen to frequent Collider (I know you’re out there…somewhere…): the two-time Oscar-winner/eight-time Grammy-winner is in early negotiations with Warner Bros. to star in a remake of the 1962 film adaptation of the Broadway play Gypsy.  While the project is currently without a writer and/or director, Streisand would star as Rose (the role turned by Rosalind Russell in the 1962 adaptation) if a deal is indeed struck.
For those unfamiliar with Gypsy (much like myself only one half-hour ago), both the play and the first film are based on the memoir of burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee.  Per THR, each iteration focuses on Lee’s relationship with her mother, Rose (Streisand), who has “since become the prototype of a ’stage mom’ in pop culture.”

Robert Pattinson Joins David Cronenberg’s COSMOPOLIS

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 5th, 2011

In what must be considered a big step in his up-hill struggle to gain credibility outside of Twilight circles, Robert Pattinson has joined David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis.  Based on the Don Delillo novel of the same name, Cosmopolis has been adapted by Cronenberg and will follow a newlywed billionaire (Pattinson) over a 24 hour span in which he cheats on his wife, gets stalked, gets assaulted, and loses his fortune.  Hopefully, at some point, he also catches a nap because that is one action-packed day.
In addition to Pattinson, Cosmopolis will also star Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard as Pattinson’s wife and Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti as one of Pattinson’s two stalkers.  Per THR, Pattinson is filling the role abandoned by Colin Farrell so that the latter can shoot the Total Recall remake that is scheduled to begin filming in mid-May (around the same time as Cosmopolis).  For more on the project, hit the jump to check out a plot summary for Delillo’s novel.
Here’s a plot summary for Delillo’s Cosmopolis [per Wikipedia]:
Cosmopolis is the story of Eric Packer, a 28 year old multi-billionaire asset manager who makes an odyssey across midtown Manhattan in order to get a haircut. The stretch limo which adorns the cover of the book is richly described as highly technical and very luxurious, filled with television screens and computer monitors, bulletproofed and floored with Carrara marble. It is also cork lined to eliminate (though unsuccessfully, Packer notes) the intrusion of street noise.
Like James Joyce’s Ulysses, Cosmopolis covers roughly one day of time and includes highly sexed women and the theme of father-son separation. Packer’s voyage is obstructed by various traffic jams caused by a presidential visit to the city, a funeral procession for a Sufi rap star and a full-fledged riot. Along the way, the hero has several chance meetings with his wife, seeing her in a taxi, a bookstore, and lying naked in the street, taking part in a movie as an extra. Meanwhile, Packer is stalked by two men, a comical “pastry assassin” and an unstable “credible threat”.
Through the course of the day, the protagonist loses incredible amounts of money for his clients by betting against the rise of the yen, a loss that parallels his own fall. Packer seems to relish being unburdened by the loss of so much money, even stopping to make sure he loses his wife’s fortune as well, to ensure his ruin is inevitable.

Adam Sandler Attached to Headline Remake of French Comedy NARCO; Offered the Lead in THE $40,000 MAN

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 11th, 2010

Adam Sandler is attached to star in Narco, a remake of the 2004 French film The Secret Adventures of Gustave Klopp.  The original is about a man with narcolepsy who dreams of action heros each time he falls asleep.  (One of these was played by Jean-Claude Van Damme.)  According to Pajiba, Clay Tarver (Joyride) is scripting the remake for Sandler’s production company Happy Madison.
Hit the jump for the trailer for Gustave Klopp, plus details on the offer out to Sandler to star in The $40,000 Man.
Last we heard about The $40,000 Man, Robert Downey Jr. was said to be interested in the lead role.  Terry Zwigoff (Ghost World) wrote the script, which centers on “a legendary astronaut and ‘true American hero,’ who is horribly injured in a car crash and is rebuilt by the government to be a bionic man but on a budget of $40,000 – which makes him not that bionic.”  John Francis Daley (Horrible Bosses) rewrote the most recent draft.
The offer probably doesn’t mean much more than “Adam Sandler is the most bankable comedy star of the last decade and he could fit in this role.”  But the names of Zwigoff and Daley combined with Downey’s interest suggest a certain level of quality.  I’m interested to see where this project goes.
As promised, here’s the trailer for The Secret Adventure s of Gustave Klopp.  I speak approximately three words of French (merde, dégueulasse, femme), but it looks kinda funny.

Salma Hayek Eyed for Lead in Kevin James’ MMA Film

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 11th, 2010

Actor Kevin James is quickly becoming the Rob Schneider of the 2000’s. After last year’s Paul Blart: Mall Cop (“Kevin James is a mall cop”), and 2011’s Zookeeper (“Kevin James is a zookeeper”), it’s looking like the actor’s next project will be “Kevin James is a mixed martial arts fighter” (not to be outdone by the upcoming “Kevin James is a valet guy”).  Pajiba reports that James’ Grown Ups co-star Salma Hayek is being eyed for the lead female role.  The Sony Pictures comedy is being written by screenwriter Allan Loeb (The Switch), and centers on a physics teacher who moonlights as a MMA fighter in order to save the job of the school’s music teacher.
Professional MMA fighter (and Zookeeper voice-over co-star) Bas Rutten is also reportedly in talks for a role in the film. No director is currently set for the untitled MMA project. James will next be seen in Ron Howard’s The Dilemma, which opens on January 14, 2011, followed by Zookeeper on July 8, 2011.

Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy Up for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 11th, 2010

Once, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was going to be a collaboration between producer/star Natalie Portman and director David O. Russell (The Fighter).  Then, Portman not to star (staying on as producer), and Russell dropped out.  Lionsgate hired Mike White (Year of the Dog) to replace Russell, but at this point there are no stars for White to direct.
Scarlett Johansson, Bradley Cooper, Mia Wasikowska, Tilda Swinton, and Catherine O’Hara were rumored for roles awhile back.  Two more have thrown their name into the hat: Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy.  Details after the jump.
According to Pajiba, Hathaway is under consideration to star as Elizabeth Bennett, while McAvoy would play Mr. Darcy.  The earlier report mentioned Johansson and Wasikowska for Elizabeth, Cooper for Darcy.  It is not clear if Hathaway and McAvoy now top the shortlist, or have merely joined it.  However, it is noteworthy that a Hathaway/McAvoy pairing suggests an entirely different  approach to casting than Johansson/Cooper.
anne_hathaway_imagePajiba also clarifies their report on Hathway’s involvement with the Barbarella remake.  She is indeed interested, but the film will have a tough time breaking out of development hell.  Though Robert Rodriguez and Robert Luketic were each attached to direct at one stage or another, the project currently has no director.
Here’s the synopsis of the source material for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a novel by Seth Grahame-Smith that inserts zombies into the Jane Austen classic:
“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.” So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy.
What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? [Amazon]

Sony Picks up VALET GUYS as Starring Vehicle for Adam Sandler and Kevin James

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 7th, 2010

In recent “fat guy in ‘funny’ situations” movie news, Sony Pictures has made a deal for a film set to star Adam Sandler and Kevin James as valets. Valet Guys is being set up as a starring vehicle for Sandler and James as two valet parking guys who witness a murder and are forced to go on the run.  The project will be written by James and his writing partner Nick Bakay (Paul Blart: Mall Cop).  Bakay also wrote the upcoming James starrer Zookeeper, for which you can watch the (painful) trailer for here.
Deadline reports that Valet Guys will be a co-production between James’ Hey Eddie, Sandler’s Happy Madison, and Todd Garner’s Broken Road. Those three companies also produced Zookeeper. No matter how spectacularly unfunny most of James and some of Sandler’s movies may be, they sure do make money. James will next be seen this January in Ron Howard’s The Dilemma, and Zookeeper opens on July 8, 2011. Sandler’s film Just Go With It, with Jennifer Aniston hits theaters on February 11, and he’s currently filming Jack and Jill, in which he plays both a brother and sister.

Mark Wahlberg Talks Seth MacFarlane’s Upcoming Feature Directing Debut, TEDDY BEAR

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 7th, 2010

In October, we reported that Mark Wahlberg was in talks to join Teddy Bear (aka “Ted“), which was the feature directing debut of Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.  At the time, we believed the plot was about a Boston man (Wahlberg) whose childhood stuffed animal/best friend has come to life.  Wahlberg has now told MTV some new details regarding the plot:
“But it’s about this kid who gets a bear for Christmas. And, you know, it’s the ’70s — it’s one of those Teddy Ruxpin-ish teddy bears where you squeeze it and it says, ‘I love you!’ The kid wishes and dreams that the bear would come alive — and a Christmas wish must be granted — and it does [come alive].”
Hit the jump for more on the project including the use of motion-capture for the teddy bear.

While we knew that MacFarlane would be providing the voice of the bear, Wahlberg also revealed that the R-rated comedy would have MacFarlane will be performing the role using motion-capture:
“Seth McFarlane’s voicing the bear — the bear is gonna look like a little teddy bear, but it’s motion-capture. It’s like ‘Avatar.’ It’s never been done before. It’s insane — I mean, what the bear does… ” Wahlberg trails off, unwilling to divulge the bear’s surely NSFW antics, but then continues with a smile, “The bear becomes famous, and that’s my ticket to getting things and living a life of privilege.”
Wahlberg says that he plans to shoot Teddy Bear at the beginning of next year.  He’s also attached to star in David O. Russell’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Allen Hughes’ Broken City.
