Martin Scorsese’s HUGO CABRET Becomes HUGO

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 30th, 2011

hugo-book-cover-slice-01
The title of Martin Scorsese’s 3D family film Hugo Cabret has been reduced by 50 percent. Variety’s Jeff Sneider reports that the movie will now simply be called Hugo.  The title was already shortened from its source material, Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret.  I’m not sure why the title was cut down but I’m sure there’s a focus group out there that said they would be more willing to see a movie called “Hugo” than “Hugo Cabret”.  As we all know, focus groups are always right.
The film has Asa Butterfield playing the eponymous character, a young boy secretly living in a train station in 1931 Paris.  When he gets caught up in a magical adventure, his secrets are put in jeopardy.  The impressive cast also includes Chloe Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Emily Mortimer, Christopher Lee, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jude Law.  Hugo is set for release on November 23rd and I’m betting we can expect to see the first trailer soon. http://collider.com/hugo-cabret-title-shortened/99722/

International Trailer for TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 30th, 2011

It may be a spy thriller, but Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of John Le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy could have some juice this awards season.  Focus Features has set the flick for November 18th and buzz is already building up around Gary Oldman’s performance as George Smiley, a semi-retired spy tasked with rooting out a mole in MI-6.  The powerhouse cast also includes Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Stephen Graham, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
The international trailer for the film has been released and it looks like Alfredson has really nailed the suspense of the story while side-stepping the predictable tropes of the spy genre.  Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  The film also stars Toby Jones and John Hurt.  Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy opens in the UK on September 16th, and it’s possible the flick could show up at the Venice Film Festival and/or the Toronto International Film Festival. http://collider.com/tinker-tailor-soldier-spy-trailer-international/99717/

Michael Bay's Next is $20 Million "Pain and Gain" About Criminal Bodybuilders

Posted: June 30th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Two years ago, Michael Bay was planning to make a small movie called "Pain and Gain" before taking on the third "Transformers" installment. Paramount didn't like that plan and convinced Bay to make "Transformers 3" first.

Now that the director has completed his trilogy, he is looking forward to getting back to work on "Pain and Gain." "I'm still going to do it," he told MTV, adding that the film will likely cost around $20 million. "I'm going to do it next."

The movie is based on a 1999
Miami Heard article called "Pain and Gain" about criminal bodybuilders. Here is how the story is being described: "They were local bodybuilders with a penchant for steroids, strippers and quick cash. And they became experts in the use of a particular motivational tool: Torture."

Bay also said that he's still interested in developing a third "Bad Boys" installments. "We talk about it," he revealed. "It's hard to get our schedules together but it's great working with those guys."

Official Synopsis For Prometheus Revealed, Ben Foster Joins The Cast

published: 2011-06-30 22:23:34 Author: Eric Eisenberg
There's been an awful lot of secrecy and security surrounding Ridley Scott's Prometheus, a film that may or may not be a prequel to his 1979 classic Alien. Earlier today, however, a tipster revealed quite a bit about the plot, but there has been a lot of questioning in regard to its validity. Now 20th Century Fox has finally released its first plot synopsis for the film to combat the validity of the leaked story, but unfortunately it doesn't exactly deliver any answers one way or the other.

Picked up by JoBlo, the synopsis itself is only 70 words (26 of which are dedicated to stroking Ridley Scott's ego) and it largely consists of filler adjectives. While you might feel excited reading it, closer examination will have you questioning why. Here it is:
Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.
Outside of explaining that the movie is a science fiction tale about people on a distant world - things we already know - this is about as bland a synopsis that you will find. Even stranger, it doesn't do anything to undermine the leaked description from earlier today, which was the whole point of it's release. The paragraph doesn't even list the movie's stellar cast, which has apparently gotten bigger.

In addition to posting the synopsis, JoBlo has also learned that Ben Foster has joined the film's ranks. Whether it's a late-in-production addition or something we just didn't know about, the casting of Foster makes the established list of actors, which includes Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Logan Marshall-Green and Michael Fassbender, even better. The project will only be the actor's second venture into the sci-fi genre, having starred in 2009's Pandorum. Still in production, the film is set to be released on June 8, 2012.

John Malkovich Needs Another Pig, RED Sequel Plans To Bring Back Cast

published: 2011-06-30 13:45:44 Author: Josh Tyler
Bruce Willis’s retired hitman movie RED was a lot more fun that expected, due in no small part to a scene stealing performance from John Malkovich, and it did surprisingly well at the box office too. I suspect its solid earnings may have something to do with elderly people showing up to see people their own age kick ass. “RED” stands for Retired and Extremely Dangerous, and when I showed up to see the movie a couple of weeks into its theatrical run I was by far the youngest person in its audience.

Old people love to see their peers shooting younger people in the head, apparently, so Summit Entertainment is churning out a sequel. MTV caught up with RED producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura who offered an update on what it’ll be all about. They plan to bring back the previous cast, which means you should expect to see Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich back and packing heat at the least. I guess they’ll likely bring back Mary Louise Parker too. But di Bonaventura also says they want to “freshen” the cast up, which means adding new faces into the mix. He says, “We'll bring in one or two characters that'll play a really big part — maybe three, but definitely one or two.”

Once they work out the math, they’ll still keep the focus on the original movie’s primary characters. Lorenzo explains, “Sometimes there's a tendency to want to do too much of a good thing so you don't really service anything, so we're really trying to stay focused on our core crew with one or two new additions.”

So what’ll it be about? He’s not talking, I guess they’ll have to find some way to drag everyone out of retirement, yet again. John Malkovich is going to need another pig.

Colin Firth's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy Trailer Kills Our Man In Istanbul

published: 2011-06-30 11:44:00 Author: Josh Tyler
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy gathers most of the best actors in Great Britain together on screen and drops them in what appears to be the coolest possible version of a Cold War era spy movie. The film’s first international trailer has arrived, and it’s everything you could hope it would be.

A remake of the same named 1979 spy thriller, the movie stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, and Toby Jones. In this version an espionage veteran named George Smiley is forced out of retirement to hunt down a Soviet agent hidden within MI6.

Watch the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy trailer:
Any time someone says “they’ve killed our man in Istanbul” I’m in. In a week full of some pretty great trailers, this may be the best. Wonder why this trailer looks so good? It’s directed by Tomas Alfredson, who proved he gets gritty, period specific films with Let the Right One In.

Look for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in theaters November 11th of this year.

Noomi Rapace Bringing Iconic Swedish Singer Anita Lindblom's Story To Screen

published: 2011-06-30 09:00:39 Author: Sean O'Connell
To some, she’ll always be Lisbeth Salander, techno-goth hacker heroine of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling Millennium trilogy. Yet while David Fincher continues to prep an American adaptation of the hit Swedish film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo original Lisbeth Noomi Rapace continues to line up projects that challenge her creatively and expand her acting resume.

Rapace wrapped work on Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes sequel, A Game of Shadows, with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, and continues to film Ridley Scott’s sci-fi thriller Prometheus. But after that project, Rapace has agreed to film an as-yet-untitled biopic of iconic Swedish singer Anita Lindblom for Twilight and Red Riding Hood director Catherine Hardwicke. And in a strange twist of fate, Rapace’s husband, Ola Rapace, will play Lindblom’s husband, boxer Bosse Högberg.

Lindblom had a massive hit in 1961 with Sån’t är livet, which was a cover of Roy Hamilton’s You Can Have Her. But Hardwicke’s film, according to ScreenDaily, will focus more on the tabloid-fueling love affair waged between Lindblom and Högberg that captivated Sweden in the 1960s and turned the duo into overnight celebrities.

The obvious challenge would be selling the film in the States, where Lindblom and Högberg’s story has no cultural impact. But the biopic calls to mind Olivier Dahan’s 2007 take on Edith Piaf’s life for La Vie en Rose, which introducing mainstream audiences to Marion Cotillard and earned the beautiful French actress an Oscar for her fearless turn. If handled properly, a Lindblom biopic could have the same effect on Rapace … though between Sherlock Holmes and Prometheus, she might already be a global sensation by the time Hardwicke’s picture makes its way to the screen.

Casting Call: Susan Sarandon in I HATE YOU DAD, Jennifer Hudson Joins THE THREE STOOGES, Johnny Knoxville in FUN SIZE, and Seth Green, Michelle Trachtenberg and More in SEXY EVIL GENIUS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 1st, 2011

We’ve got quite a few casting stories for you today. First up, Susan Sarandon has joined the cast of the Adam Sandler/Andy Samberg comedy I Hate You Dad. The comedy revolves around a father who moves in with his son and his son’s fiancé just before they’re about to get married, with Leighton Meester set to play Samberg’s fiancée. THR reports that in addition to Sarandon, Will Forte, Milo Ventimiglia, Eva Amurri (Californication), Blake Clark, Meagan Fay (Party Down), Tony Orlando, Dan Patrick and previously announced James Caan are all in negotiations to join the Sean Anders-directed comedy. Sarandon will play a sexy teacher who is the mother of Samberg’s character.
Additionally, Jennifer Hudson is the latest actor to join the cast of the Farrelly brothers’ The Three Stooges. The film stars Will Sasso as Curly, Sean Hayes as Larry, Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe, Jane Lynch, Larry David, Stephen Collins and Craig Bierko. Deadline reports that Hudson will play Sister Rosmary at the orphanage that the Stooges are raised. Lynch and David play two other (presumably evil) nuns at the orphanage. The Three Stooges is currently filming. Hit the jump for the casting news of Johnny Knoxville and a lot more in Fun Size and Seth Green, Michelle Trachtenberg, Katee Sackhoff, Harold Perrineau and Billy Baldwin in Sexy Evil Genius. http://collider.com/susan-sarandon-i-hate-you-dad-jennifer-hudson-three-stooges/94114/

Focus Features Sets TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY for November 18th

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 1st, 2011

If you were wondering whether or not Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of John Le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was being set up for an awards run, you now have your answer.  Variety reports that Focus Features has set the spy thriller for November 18th.  The story centers on “George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a veteran spy pulled out of semi-retirement to ferret out a Soviet agent in MI6.”  Oldman is already receiving early buzz on his performance and he’s bolstered by a strong supporting cast that includes Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Stephen Graham, and Benedict Cumberbatch.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see the film premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, but nothing has been announced on that front.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy has some tough competition on November 18th, but it’s not going for the same audience.  Also opening that weekend is The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and Happy Feet Two, which obviously are going for after a different demographic than Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

First Clip from FRIGHT NIGHT

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 30th, 2011

DreamWorks has released the first clip from the horror remake Fright Night.  Colin Farrell is especially menacing in the clip as Jerry, the vampire who just moved in next door, as he describes to Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) the raw sexual appeal of his girlfriend (Imogen Poots) and mother (Toni Collette).  The way he purrs “she’s ripe” really burrows under my skin in the most unsettling way.  I’m excited to see Farrell chew his way through the scenery (fangs and all) when Fright Night hits theaters on August 19.
Christopher Mintz-Plasse and David Tennant also star in the 3D remake from director Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl).  Watch the clip after the break. http://collider.com/fright-night-movie-clip/93730/

Toni Collette to Reteam with Director PJ Hogan for MENTAL

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 30th, 2011

Australian-born actress Toni Collette is set to reunite with fellow Aussie PJ Hogan (Confessions of a Shopaholic) for the director’s latest project Mental. The two previously worked together on the 1994 Australian comedy Muriel’s Wedding, a film that served as a breakout hit for both Collette and Hogan. Variety reports that Mental, an Australian production, will center on a family and its “crazy but charismatic nanny,” because crazy and charismatic are the most desirable traits when choosing a nanny. Hogan is penning the script, and Screen Australia will be backing the project. Collette will next be seen in the Fright Night remake, which hits theaters August 19th.

Fright Night Clip Featuring Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin

May 30, 2011 by Courtney O.
MTV has debuted the first clip from DreamWorks Pictures' Fright Night featuring stars Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin. Check out the clip below!
In the film, senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all going on: he's running with the popular crowd and dating the most coveted girl in his high school. In fact, he's so cool he's even dissing his best friend. But trouble arrives when Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there's something not quite right-but everyone, including Charlie's mom (Toni Collette), doesn't notice. After observing some very strange activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on the neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.http://www.movieweb.com/news/fright-night-clip-featuring-colin-farrell-and-anton-yelchin

50/50 is an original story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places. Joseph and Seth star as best friends whose lives are changed by a cancer diagnosis.
The film draws its emotional core from director Will Reiser’s own battle with cancer.
“Ideally we wanted to make a film that would be as funny, sad, and hopefully as honest as the experience we went through. As soon as the script was completed, it quickly became a passion project for all of us. It helped us come to terms with Will’s struggle as well as our own experiences,” Seth said.

Alexander Skarsgard Covers 'Interview' June 2011

Alexander Skarsgard Covers 'Interview' June 2011
Alexander Skarsgard is seriously sexy on the cover of Interview magazine’s June 2011 issue.
Here’s what the 34-year-old True Blood actor had to share with Arcade Fire’s Win Butler, who interviewed him for the mag:
On not wanting to only play Eric: “I do get a lot of scripts sent to me where they basically want me to play Eric from True Blood, but just a different name in a different movie. That’s not interesting to me. I don’t want to play a character that I’ve played for four years on a television show, change the name, and make him a zombie instead of a vampire.”
On connecting with the characters he plays: “In a weird way, I always play myself, just through different mirrors. If I read a script and I don’t connect with a character, if I can’t find the character on the page in my soul, then I’m not going to be able to do a good job.”
On what kinds of roles he craves: “There’s got to be something new, something fresh. I want to almost be intimidated when I embark on a journey. I wouldn’t say there’s a fear, but I do get slightly nervous in the beginning when that happens, and I like that feeling. That triggers me a lot.” http://justjared.buzznet.com/2011/05/29/alexander-skarsgard-covers-interview-june-2011/

A couple of new images from the Cold War thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy have hit the web. Directed by Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In), the adaptation of John Le Carre’s novel centers on semi-retired agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) who is pulled out of semi-retirement to ferret out a Soviet mole within MI6. In addition to Oldman, the phenomenal cast includes Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, John Hurt and Toby Jones. When speaking with Steve earlier this year, Oldman said that his part in this film is probably the greatest role he’s ever played. Needless to say, this one should definitely be on your radar. Hit the jump to check out Tom Hardy in a really bad wig, as well as a synopsis of Le Carre’s novel.

The international trailer for One Day has been released. Directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education), the adaptation of the David Nicholls book stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. While the first U.S. trailer that was released was a little too “Lifetime Original Movie” for my liking, this international trailer seems to give a better feel for how the finished film will be. I’m intrigued by the story, and I’ve been told that Nicholls’ book is fantastic. Hit the jump to watch the international trailer yourself. One Day hits theaters August 19th. http://collider.com/one-day-international-trailer/93575/

Alice Braga Joins ELYSIUM

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 29th, 2011

In the eyes of casting directors, there is something very science-fictional about Alice Braga: I Am LegendBlindnessRepo MenPredators.  Falling in line, writer/director Neill Blomkamp (District 9) will employ Braga to bring his vision of the future to life in Elysium.  (Initially there was some Braga confusion.  Deadline first reported that it was Sonia Braga who joined the film — the post has since been updated to reflect that it is in fact Sonia’s niece Alice who signed on.)
Braga joins Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura, and Sharlto Copley in Elysium, scheduled for release on March 1, 2013.  The plot is a mystery for now, by the “unabashedly big movie” is said to take place 100 years in the future on another planet.  Foster recently confirmed she will play “the head of an alien planet,” if that offers a clue about what you’re in for. http://collider.com/alice-braga-elysium/93564/

Thomas Jane Too White for Sylvester Stallone's "Headshot"

Posted: May 30th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Back in April, it was reported that Thomas Jane (The Mist, Punisher) has signed on to star alongside Sylvester Stallone in "Headshot" crime thriller, to be directed by Walter Hills (48 Hrs, The Warriors).

Filming was set to begin this month, but Warner Bros is now looking to replace Jane with a more "ethnic" actor. The studio believes that with a minority in the role, the film will be able to reach a wider audience, which results in bigger box office. Both Stallone and Hill would like to keep Jane, but that may not happen.

In "Headshot," Stallone's character teams with a young NYPD detective (Jane) in a high-stakes investigation that leads from the back alleys of New Orleans all the way to Washington, DC. The unlikely duo, brought together by two vicious murders, take on all who stand in their way, and are willing to sacrifice everything to exact revenge.

Tom Hanks was guest on Jimmy Kimmel’s post-Oscar show last night and he brought along the first clip from his new film Larry Crowne.  The story centers on a laid-off middle-aged man (Hanks) who goes back to college and strikes up a relationship with one of his professors (Julia Roberts).  Larry Crowne is the first film Hanks has directed since 1996’s That Thing You Do, and he co-wrote the script with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding).  The clip looks charming and he almost always succeeds when it comes to light-hearted fare.
Hanks also did a fun spoof of the TLC’s horrific Toddlers & Tiaras, a show which attempts to capture the elusive pedophile/abusive parent demographic.  Hit the jump to check out the clip from Larry Crowne and Hanks’ Toddlers & Tiaras spoof.  Larry Crowne opens July 1st.

Universal Pictures has picked up the domestic distribution rights to Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of John Le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.  The Cold War thriller centers on semi-retired agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) who is pulled out of semi-retirement to ferret out a Soviet mole within MI6.  The film has an impressive cast that also includes Oscar-winner Colin Firth (great to write that), Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, John Hurt and Toby Jones.
According to Deadline, the film (which is Alfredson’s follow-up to Let the Right One In) was a hot project at the Berlin Film Festival, but Universal chose to exercise its first-look option and snatch the project away from a bidding war between The Weinstein Company and Summit Entertainment.  Oldman reportedly gives a “tour de force” performance in the film, which is currently in post-production.  Universal is said to be eyeing a November/December release for the film, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it plays at the Toronto International Film Festival.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of Le Carre’s novel.

UK Trailer for SOURCE CODE Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 23rd, 2010

Summit has released a new international trailer for Source Code, a sci-fi thriller directed by Duncan Jones (Moon).  Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a soldier who wakes up in the body of a stranger on a Chicago commuter train: “he learns he’s part of a government experiment called the ‘Source Code,’ a program that enables him to cross over into another man’s identity in the last 8 minutes of his life.”  Michelle Monaghan (Due Date), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air), and Jeffrey Wright (Quantum of Solace) also star.  Source Code opens on April 1, 2011.  Hit the jump to check out the UK trailer.
I’ve seen True Grit twice in as many days, which has tripled my exposure to the inspiring trailer for The Adjustment Bureau.  That hits theaters a month before Source Code.  A brief look at the releases in between show it’s a good month to be a sci-fi fan.  Check it:
I’m not yet convinced that Apollo 18 will be any good, and it may be a bit of a stretch to label Sucker Punch science fiction.  But man, that’s a murderers’ row.
In fact, if you take Apollo 18 out of the mix (and really, let’s), Source Code is the one I’m most worried about.  I loved Moon.  Loved it.  And the idea behind Source Code — not that I fully comprehend it — seems cool enough.  The cast is solid.  But so far the trailers have seemed a bit… sterile.
I fear Jones is in danger of following in the footsteps of Richard Kelly.  Kelly has a sharp eye and a bottomless well of great ideas (both evident in Moon).  When these things cohere — as in Donnie Darko –you’ve got a classic film.  But when they don’t — as in Southland Tales and The Box — you’re left with an ambitious, engaging mess.
If Source Code ends up resembling The Box… well, that’s not so bad.  I’d kill for Hollywood to release ten Boxes each year.  But really, that’s a poor comparison.  The bar is Moon.  If Jones equals his last effort: awesome.  If he clears it: instant classic.
Here’s the official synopsis for Source Code:
When decorated soldier Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. In an assignment unlike any he’s ever known, he learns he’s part of a government experiment called the “Source Code,” a program that enables him to cross over into another man’s identity in the last 8 minutes of his life. With a second, much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack. Filled with mind-boggling twists and heart-pounding suspense, Source Code is a smart action-thriller directed by Duncan Jones (Moon) also starring Michelle Monaghan (Eagle Eye, Due Date), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Departed), and Jeffrey Wright (Quantum of Solace, Syriana).

First Look at Tom Hardy in TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY

The first images of Tom Hardy on the set of Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy landed online recently.  Sporting a slew of ill-conceived tattoos and a blonde wig, Hardy looks to be settling in nicely to the role of British operative Ricki Tarr.  Based on the 1974 John Le Carre spy novel of the same name, the film tells the story of George Smiley (played by Gary Oldman) and his attempt to uncover a mole within British Intelligence.  Although I’ve never read the novel, given its solid cast (mentioned below) and its status as Alfredson’s follow-up to the terrific Let the Right One In, this project is shaping up to be one of my most anticipated for 2011.
Hit the jump to check out the set images for yourself.  In addition to Hardy and Oldman, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy also stars Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, and Stephen Graham.

Javier Bardem as SUPERMAN?! Bardem’s Secret Past as a Not-So-Super Superhero Finally Revealed

by Talia Soghomonian    Posted: December 23rd, 2010

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s… Javier Bardem. By the time the average actor hits the big time, he has had years of small jobs behind him, and the Spanish actor is no exception as Jay Leno revealed (read embarrassed him) Wednesday night on The Tonight Show by replaying an old clip from his past.
“You never dressed maybe as Superman?” asked Leno. “Oh Jeez!” Responded Bardem, knowing an embarrassing moment from his past in Spain was about to surface and become international news. “You cannot hide anymore,” said Leno.
Back in 1989, a very skinny Bardem donned the superhero’s famed tights and cape n the popular Spanish TV show El día por delante, which aired on Televisión Española (TVE), in a segment called “”¡Es…Superman!” Well, I don’t think superhero filmmakers will be giving him a call anytime soon. Hit the jump to see why.
Bardem’s Superman is simply no hero. He can’t fly, he can’t avoid bumping into objects and he especially can’t find a better acting gig. The Academy Award winner admits he was a struggling actor back then, even though he came from a family of acclaimed filmmakers and thespians — he started out at age six and a half in the film El Pícaro (The Scoundrel) – and questioned whether he really wanted to become an actor. “It’s a hard job,” he told Leno.
But I guess playing a klutzy Superman on a talk show is way better than his rather impressive array of other jobs, which included rugby player, bouncer, construction worker and stripper (surely someone can dig up a clip of that particular job!) Thank goodness director Bigas Luna came along and gave him his big break in The Ages of Lulu a year later.
His next film, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Biutiful which earned him the Best Actor award in Cannes this year, opens on December 29th.  Watch Jay Leno embarrass Javier on last night’s show, followed by clips of El día por delante and El Picaro:

Michelle Williams Opens Up About Heath Ledger's Death

Michelle Williams Opens Up About Heath Ledger's Death
Almost three years after Heath Ledger’s tragic death, Michelle Williams is opening up about how she has coped with his loss.
Here’s what the 30-year-old actress shared with Nightline:
On Heath’s passing: “In a strange way, I miss that year, because all those possibilities that existed then are gone. It didn’t seem unlikely to me that he could walk through a door or could appear behind a bush. It was a year of very magical thinking, and in some ways I’m sad to be moving further and further away from it.”
On handling the news: “I found meanings around the circumstances but the actual event itself I can’t find a, I can’t find it. I can’t find a meaning for it. I can find meanings in things and people and relationships that have sprung up and friendships that have strengthened. I found a lot of meaning in that but not in ‘why.’”
On giving their daughter Matilda a normal childhood: “It’s going well. We’re doing a good job of it. It is of more importance to me than anything in my life. I would rearrange anything to make that possible. If something starts to encroach on that it’s going to be removed from the equation.”
Watch Michelle’s interview, which also includes her Blue Valentine co-star Ryan Gosling.
