**New Trailers for HENRY’S CRIME, FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS, LARRY CROWNE and THE BEAVER

3 Clips from Jodie Foster’s THE BEAVER Starring Mel Gibson
by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted: March 16th, 2011
With director Jodie Foster’s The Beaver world premiering at SXSW tonight, Summit Entertainment has released the first three clips. Starring Mel Gibson as a man who starts to treat a beaver hand puppet as a living creature after he begins to suffer from depression, The Beaver has been repeatedly delayed due to Gibson’s controversial behavior. However, if the film plays well at SXSW tonight, perhaps the delay will help Summit at the box office.

While I know Gibson has a lot of issues and some of the things that he’s done and said are crazy, I’ve always been a fan of his work and I’m going to try and keep his professional and private life separate. But I’m probably in the minority. Hit the jump for the clips. The Beaver also stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone).

First Trailer for LARRY CROWNE; Directed by and Starring Tom Hanks
by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted: March 16th, 2011
Tom_Hanks_Larry_Crowne_image slice
Universal has released the first trailer for Larry Crowne. Directed by and starring Tom Hanks, the story centers on a laid-off middle-aged man (Hanks) who goes back to college and strikes up a relationship with one of his professors (Julia Roberts). Larry Crowne is the first film Hanks has directed since 1996’s That Thing You Do, and he co-wrote the script with Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding). While the story seems pretty simple, Hanks has proven himself behind the camera and people love the guy. What I’m trying to say is…I’m pretty sure Larry Crowne is going to be a big hit for Universal. Check out the trailer, synopsis and new images after the jump:

New Trailer for FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS
by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted: March 16th, 2011
friends-with-benefits-justin-timberlake-mila-kunis-slice
A new green band trailer for Friends with Benefits has been released. Directed and co-written by Will Gluck (Easy A), the romantic comedy stars Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins, and Patricia Clarkson. As you might expect, the film tells the story of two friends (Timberlake and Kunis) who decide to give no-strings-attached-coitus the old college try. The trailer is quite funny and definitely worth checking out. Also, after The Social Network, hosting some great episodes of Saturday Night Live, and looking really funny in this trailer, I think Timberlake should move full time into making movies. At least I hope he does. Friends with Benefits is slated to hit theaters on July 22nd, 2011.

Trailer for HENRY’S CRIME Starring Keanu Reeves
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 16th, 2011

Moving Pictures has released a trailer for Henry’s Crime, a heist comedy starring Keanu Reeves, Vera Farmiga, and James Caan. While it’s basically the same trailer that leaked online back in January, we never posted it and now it’s in higher quality.

The story centers on a nice guy (Reeves) who goes to jail for a bank robbery he didn’t commit. Now released from prison, he enlists his old cellmate (Caan) to rob the bank for real this time. The film looks cute and it’s nice to see Reeves in an intentional comedy. Hit the jump to check out the trailer and click here for Steve’s interview with Reeves from when the film played back at the Toronto Film Festival. Henry’s Crime opens April 8th.

Click over to Apple to see the trailer in HD.
Here’s the official synopsis for Henry’s Crime:

Working the night shift as a toll collector on a lonely stretch of highway in Buffalo, New York, Henry is a man seemingly without ambition, dreams or purpose; a man sleepwalking his way through life. He gets his wakeup call early one morning when he becomes an unwitting participant in an ill-conceived bank heist. Rather than give up the names of the real culprits, Henry takes the fall and goes to jail. There, he meets the irrepressible Max , a con man who’s grown far too comfortable with the familiarity and security of his ‘idyllic’ life behind bars, but one who also helps plant an idea in Henry’s mind which will change his life forever: for a man to find his purpose, he must first have a dream. Upon his release one year later, Henry finds his purpose. Having done the time, he decides he may as well do the crime. Discovering a long forgotten bootlegger’s tunnel which runs from the very same bank to a theater across the alleyway, he convinces the reluctant Max to file for his long overdue parole — and then recruits his former cellmate to help stage a robbery. Their plan is simple: by infiltrating the theater and its current production of Chekhov’s, The Cherry Orchard, the unlikely duo will buy just enough time to dig their way to the adjacent bank vault and drive off with their loot. Unfortunately that plan also includes Henry taking the lead role in the play, where he finds himself slowly falling for the production’s mercurial leading lady, Julie.

THE BEAVER Pushed Back to May 6 Limited Release; Opens Wide May 20

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 7th, 2011

I can hardly wait to see The Beaver, but it looks like I’ll have to.  This bizarre Mel Gibson movie will premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in early March, and was originally scheduled for limited release March 23 followed by wide release starting April 8.  The SXSW premiere remains intact, but Summit Entertainment has delayed the limited release until May 6, with plans to open The Beaver wide May 20.
According to THR, there are two primary reasons for the delay.  Director/star Jodie Foster is shooting Roman Polanski’s God of Carnage until mid-March, and the new release date frees her up to work the promotional circuit.  Secondly, the studio hopes to capitalize on two months worth of good buzz from SXSW.  Hit the jump to read the official synopsis for The Beaver, which stars Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) alongside Gibson and Foster.

Lasse Hallstrom to Direct THE HYPNOTIST

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 7th, 2011

Lasse Hallström will return to the Swedish cinema after more than two decades to direct The Hypnotist, an adaptation of the best selling crime novel by Lars Kepler.  The Hypnotist is the first in a series of novels revolving around Detective Joona Linna, which rank just below Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy (i.e The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels) on the list of Sweden’s most successful crime novels worldwide.  Svensk Filmindustri and Sonet Film hope The Hypnotist will launch a film franchise of similiar stature.  According to THR, The Hypnotist will shoot this winter for a planned 2012 release.
Hallström recently wrapped production an adaptation Salmon Fishing in Yemen which stars Emily Blunt, Ewan McGregor, and Kristin Scott Thomas.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis of Kepler’s The Hypnotist.

Confirmed: Cobie Smulders Cast in THE AVENGERS

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: February 7th, 2011

cobie-smulders-slice
We heard over the weekend that Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) was close to landing the role of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive director Maria Hill in The Avengers, intended as a sidekick of sorts for Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.  Variety confirms that Smulders is wrapping up a deal with Marvel to appear as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in up to nine films.  The character’s name isn’t specified, but the bio — “Character would work closely with Jackson’s Nick Fury, and eventually becomes the head of the espionage and law enforcement group” — sounds very similar to that of Ms. Hill.
I love Smulders on HIMYM — partly because Cobie Smulders is an awesome name, but mostly because of her endless charisma.  I don’t know how big the role will actually be, but I’m excited to see Smulders in a film of this size.  Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Jeremy Renner star in The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon and scheduled for release on May 4, 2012.  Hit the jump for a brief character bio on Maria Hill.

New Posters for THE KING’S SPEECH and THE MECHANIC

by Jason Barr    Posted: December 3rd, 2010

the_king's_speech_the_mechanic_movie_poster_slice

New posters for The King’s Speech and The Mechanic have hit the interwebs.  Starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, and Helena Bonham Carter, The King’s Speech tells of the unlikely crowning of England’s King George VI (Firth) and his subsequent attempt at overcoming a lifelong speech impediment.  As for the poster, it features a minimalistic approach and is a vast improvement over its somewhat boring predecessor.
Moving on to The Mechanic, the film stars Jason Statham, Donald Sutherland, and Ben Foster (The Messenger), and sees Statham making a turn as a vengeful assassin (a stretch, I know).  Unlike The King’s Speech, I feel like The Mechanic’s latest poster takes a step back from its previous offering by trading in symbolism (a uniquely assembled gun) for an on-the-nose depiction of Statham rappelling while taking aim at some ruffians who, no doubt, had it coming.  To check out the posters for yourself, hit the jump.
The King’s Speech is directed by Tom Hooper (HBO’s John Adams) and is currently enjoying a limited theatrical release in the US.  Poster comes courtesy of Yahoo! Movies:

Here’s the official synopsis for The King’s Speech:
After the death of his father King George V (Michael Gambon) and the scandalous abdication of Prince Edward VII’s (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth) who has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King George VI of England. With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush).  After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle.  Based on the true story of King George VI, THE KING’S SPEECH follows the Royal Monarch’s quest to find his voice.
Cast: Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Guy Pearce, Derek Jacobi, Timothy Spall and Michael Gambon
Directed by: Tom Hooper
Written by: David Seidler
The Mechanic is helmed by Simon West (Con-Air) and hits theaters on January 28, 2011.  Here’s the poster [from Empire]:
the_mechanic_movie_poster
The official synopsis for The Mechanic:
Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) is a ‘mechanic’ – an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets. It’s a job that requires professional perfection and total detachment, and Bishop is the best in the business. But when his mentor and close friend Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop is anything but detached. His next assignment is self-imposed – he wants those responsible dead.
His mission grows complicated when Harry’s son Steve (Ben Foster) approaches him with the same vengeful goal and a determination to learn Bishop’s trade. Bishop has always acted alone but he can’t turn his back on Harry’s son. A methodical hit man takes an impulsive student deep into his world and a deadly partnership is born. But while in pursuit of their ultimate mark, deceptions threaten to surface and those hired to fix problems become problems themselves.

First Trailer and New Poster for THE BEAVER Starring Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, and Jennifer Lawrence

by Ramses Flores    Posted: December 3rd, 2010

Yesterday, we reported on the first official image and synopsis for Jodie Foster’s upcoming film, The Beaver. Now, Summit Entertainment has released the first trailer for the film, which stars Mel Gibson as a man who starts to treat a beaver hand puppet as a living creature after he begins to suffer from depression.  The film has been the center of a lot of debate due to Gibson’s recent behavior.  A lot of people have been wondering if Summit would bench the film even longer, or if they’d release it as is.  But with Summit setting a spring 2011 release date, it looks like we’ll all get to see Gibson’s latest quite soon.  Of course the big question is, will Gibson’s controversial antics cause moviegoers to avoid his movies, or will they forgive and forget?
The Beaver also stars Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone).  You can watch the trailer and read a plot synopsis for the film after the jump.

Sundance 2011: First Images from MARGIN CALL Starring Kevin Spacey, Zachary Quinto and Stanley Tucci

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 3rd, 2010

Continuing our coverage of the images being released from films premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January, we now have the first official images from the financial thriller Margin Call. We previously brought you images from this film via last month’s American Film Market (AFM), but were asked by the studio to take them down. But now from Sundance, we’re able to bring you completely legal and hassle-free images for Margin Call!
In all seriousness, writer/director JC Chandor’s flick actually sounds pretty cool. Featuring an all-star cast including Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany, Zachary Quinto, Jeremy Irons, and Penn Badgley, the film revolves around the key people at an investment bank during the 24-hour period before the recent financial crisis. Apparently the key people at this bank have knowledge of the impending disaster, and encounter some serious moral questions. Hit the jump to check out all of the images, as well as the brief synopsis from Sundance.
If you want to check out the thorough, albeit slightly spoilery, synopsis from the AFM, click back to our original article on the film. Margin Call will be screening in the out-of-competition category at the film festival, and is set to hit theaters on April 15th 2011. Here’s the synopsis from Sundance:
Margin Call / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: JC Chandor) – Over a 24-hour period during the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis, the key people at an investment bank struggle to decide how to handle an emergency business situation while examining the personal and moral implications of every action they take. Cast: Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore, and Stanley Tucci.

First Official Image and Synopsis for THE BEAVER Starring Mel Gibson; Film to Be Released in Spring 2011; Trailer to Hit Tomorrow

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 2nd, 2010

the_beaver_movie_image_jodie_foster_mel_gibson_slice_01

There’s been a great deal of discussion over how Summit Entertainment will handle Jodie Foster’s new film The Beaver ever since audio of Mel Gibson’s hate-filled tirades towards his ex-girlfriend ended up online.  There’s always cause for concern when the audience sees your lead actor and can hear him saying the words “You look like a fucking pig in heat and if you get raped by a pack of n***ers it will be your fault.”  It also doesn’t help if your crazy, racist lead actor is playing a character who treats the Beaver puppet on his hand like a living creature.
But Summit is pressing ahead and have now released the first official image from the film along with the official synopsis.  Hit the jump to check it out along with news about when the film may be hitting theaters.

According to Deadline, Summit is planning to release the film in spring 2011.  The studio (wisely) decided not to put it in for an awards-qualifying run and have decided that Springtime for Gibson is the best decision.  The trailer for the film is set to be released tomorrow.
Personally, I’m glad they’re not burying the film and sending it straight to DVD.  It’s an interesting premise and I still think Gibson’s a good actor.  I think as long as moviegoers are mature enough to acknowledge that they don’t have to like someone personally in order to appreciate their art, then The Beaver will do fine.  Of course the question then becomes, “How mature is the American moviegoing public?”  A recent CBS/Vanity Fair poll found that 76% of respondents said Gibson’s personal troubles would have no effect on whether they would see one of his movies.  We’ll see if that’s true when The Beaver hits next spring.  Click here to see the first poster.

28 High Res Images from Sofia Coppola’s SOMEWHERE

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 2nd, 2010

With writer/director Sofia Coppola’s (Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette), Somewhere opening later this month, Focus Features has released a ton of new images from the Golden Lion Award Winner for Best Picture at the 2010 Venice International Film Festival.  Here’s the official synopsis:
Somewhere is a witty, moving, and empathetic look into the orbit of actor Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff).  You have probably seen him in the tabloids; Johnny is living at the legendary Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood. He has a Ferrari to drive around in, and a constant stream of girls and pills to stay in with. Comfortably numbed, Johnny drifts along. Then, his 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) from his failed marriage arrives unexpectedly at the Chateau. Their encounters encourage Johnny to face up to where he is in life and confront the question that we all must: which path in life will you take?

While I’m under embargo from writing my thoughts, I think it’s safe to say Somewhere is like a younger sibling of Lost in Translation.  Meaning, if you liked Translation
