Ian McKellen, Judi Dench, Gillian Anderson, and Mark Williams to Star in 18th Century Zombie Film THE CURSE OF THE BUXOM STRUMPET

It looks like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies isn’t the only period-piece/zombie flick mash-up in town.  ScreenDaily reports that Ian McKellen, Judi Dench, Gillian Anderson, and Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley from the Harry Potter films) are attached to star in Matthew Butler’s The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet.  The film is based off Butler’s 2010 short comedy E’gad Zombies, which also starred McKellen.  The plot of Buxom Strumpet, co-written by Tori Hart, is about the “inhabitants of a small seaside town who are struck down with a deadly illness.”  No details are provided on that deadly illness, but I imagine it involves glassy eyes, coming back to life, and a hunger for human flesh.
While I’m a fan of this cast, I’m still not sold on the appeal of these movies beyond the novelty they provide.  I can understand Butler using the premise for a short film, but I’m worried that the joke becomes stale when stretched out to feature length.  Hit the jump to read a synopsis of E’gad Zombies and to see a trailer for the short.

Mel Gibson in Talks for SLEIGHT OF HAND

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: May 17th, 2011 at 10:32 pm

Mel Gibson is in talks to star opposite Kiefer Sutherland, Gerard Depardieu, and Thomas Jane  in the heist comedy Sleight of Hand.  According to Variety, the story centers on “a bunch of bungling burglars in Paris who inadvertently steal a rare gold coin belonging to a gangster.”  Til Schweiger, Johnny Hallyday, Jon Lovitz, and Eric Cantona also star.  The initial announcement at the Cannes Film Festival indicates Sleight of Hand will be shot entirely in Paris from July to September.  Brad Mirman (The Confession) will direct from his own script.
It’s hard not to think of every news item involving Gibson as a step in his public image rehabilitation, but I have nothing insightful to say about this possibility.  Everyone loves a good heist film, especially if you let the crew loose in Paris.  I like that the cast skews a bit older, and Gibson seems like a fine fit in however big a role he plays. (See, banal.)
Gibson has How I Spent My Summer Vacation in the can, but the action movie is still in search of distributor for a domestic release.  (The rights to most international territories sold quickly.)  Read the official synopsis for Sleight of Hand after the jump. http://collider.com/mel-gibson-sleight-of-hand/91497/

Ryan Reynolds to Choose Between "Deadpool" and "The Flash"

Posted: May 19th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Ryan Reynolds to Choose Between Deadpool and The Flash
Ryan Reynolds played Deadpool in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which is why it was surprising that Warner Bros hired the actor to play the title role in "Green Lantern."

But there were also talks of Reynolds playing The Flash, which may be difficult to do if Green Lantern and The Flash both appear in the upcoming "Justice League of America" movie.

We know that the actor has been prepping "Deadpool," which Reynolds says may be the reason why he will have to pass on "The Flash." "I always thought if I did a 'Deadpool' film, I wouldn't do a 'Flash' movie," he told CBR, adding that he's comfortable with playing Deadpool after playing Green Lantern because the characters are so different. "The [Deadpool] movie we're working on is more of a deconstruction of superhero movies."

Todd Phillips Says "The Hangover" Will be a Trilogy

Posted: May 19th, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Todd Phillips Says The Hangover Will be a Trilogy
During a press conference for "The Hangover Part 2," director Todd Phillips confirmed that he would like the franchise to become a trilogy if audiences come out to see the second film.

"We always envisioned it as a trilogy," he said. "The third would very much be a finale and an ending. The most I could say about it, and I haven't discussed it with these actors, is that it is not following that template but very much a new idea."

When asked where he would like "The Hangover Part 3" to take place, Phillips joked: "I'm very open, like the Olympic committee, to being pitched and presented cities. Flown around with wine and women and bribed and then I will make my decision."

Peter Berg’s Adaptation of LONE SURVIVOR Is a Go at Universal; Taylor Kitsch in Talks to Play Navy Seal
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 17th, 2011 at 9:24 pm

Peter Berg has been attached to direct an adaptation of Lone Survivor, the autobiography of Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell, since 2007. Berg bonded with Luttrell during the making of The Kingdom, and penned the adaptation after spending a month with a Navy Seal unit. The idea was to make Lone Survivor his next film, but desert war films (including The Kingdom) were tough sells to moviegoers, and thus to studios. Universal made a deal with Berg: “You direct Battleship, we’ll fund Lone Survivor.” Flash forward a few years — Berg is in post-production on Battleship, and the Navy elite are en vogue following the triumphant and cinematic assassination of Osama Bin Laden by “Seal Team 6.” Disney and Kathryn Bigelow appear to have first dibs on that particular story, but Luttrell’s tale covers the same subject matter with comparable heroism. Luttrell was one of four Seals on a Bin Laden-related reconnaissance mission to a Taliban stronghold — only Luttrell made it back alive.

Lone Survivor is up and running again at Universal; with a script ready, Berg and the studio are targeting a January start date for production. Berg reached out to Battleship star Taylor Kitsch to play one of the Seals; he will continue to meet with other actors to fill out the foursome in the coming weeks.

Hit the jump for quotes from Berg on his approach to Luttrell’s story and a tongue-in-cheek response to the Battleship backlash.

Oscar Isaac Joins Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis in STILL I RISE
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: May 17th, 2011 at 7:45 pm

Oscar Isaac (Sucker Punch) has signed on to play the male lead in Still I Rise. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis star as “two frustrated mothers who team up to transform an inner-city public school.” Variety says Isaac will play a “sexy, ukulele-playing teacher” (is there any other kind of ukulele-playing teacher?) who romances and inspires Gyllenhaal’s character. Director Daniel Barnz (Beastly) is now polishing a rewrite of the original Brin Hill screenplay. Production on the Walden Media/Fox collaboration begins next week in Pittsburgh.

Isaac will next be seen among the impressive likes of Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, and Bryan Cranston in Drive when the movie opens September 16. Later in the year, Isaac will appear as one of the high school reunionites in the ensemble drama Ten Year; the role features a performance of a song Isaac wrote exclusively for the film. (Prior to his acting career, Isaac was the lead singer and guitarist for The Blinking Underdogs.) Finally, Isaac has a role in W.E., the romantic drama co-written and directed by Madonna.

First Trailer and New Poster for THE BEAVER Starring Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, and Jennifer Lawrence

by Ramses Flores    Posted: December 3rd, 2010

Yesterday, we reported on the first official image and synopsis for Jodie Foster’s upcoming film, The Beaver. Now, Summit Entertainment has released the first trailer for the film, which stars Mel Gibson as a man who starts to treat a beaver hand puppet as a living creature after he begins to suffer from depression.  The film has been the center of a lot of debate due to Gibson’s recent behavior.  A lot of people have been wondering if Summit would bench the film even longer, or if they’d release it as is.  But with Summit setting a spring 2011 release date, it looks like we’ll all get to see Gibson’s latest quite soon.  Of course the big question is, will Gibson’s controversial antics cause moviegoers to avoid his movies, or will they forgive and forget?
The Beaver also stars Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone).  You can watch the trailer and read a plot synopsis for the film after the jump.
You can watch the trailer in HD over at Apple.

Sundance 2011: First Images from MARGIN CALL Starring Kevin Spacey, Zachary Quinto and Stanley Tucci

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 3rd, 2010

Continuing our coverage of the images being released from films premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January, we now have the first official images from the financial thriller Margin Call. We previously brought you images from this film via last month’s American Film Market (AFM), but were asked by the studio to take them down. But now from Sundance, we’re able to bring you completely legal and hassle-free images for Margin Call!
In all seriousness, writer/director JC Chandor’s flick actually sounds pretty cool. Featuring an all-star cast including Kevin Spacey, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany, Zachary Quinto, Jeremy Irons, and Penn Badgley, the film revolves around the key people at an investment bank during the 24-hour period before the recent financial crisis. Apparently the key people at this bank have knowledge of the impending disaster, and encounter some serious moral questions. Hit the jump to check out all of the images, as well as the brief synopsis from Sundance.
If you want to check out the thorough, albeit slightly spoilery, synopsis from the AFM, click back to our original article on the film. Margin Call will be screening in the out-of-competition category at the film festival, and is set to hit theaters on April 15th 2011. Here’s the synopsis from Sundance:
Margin Call / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: JC Chandor) – Over a 24-hour period during the early stages of the 2008 financial crisis, the key people at an investment bank struggle to decide how to handle an emergency business situation while examining the personal and moral implications of every action they take. Cast: Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore, and Stanley Tucci.

First Official Image and Synopsis for THE BEAVER Starring Mel Gibson; Film to Be Released in Spring 2011; Trailer to Hit Tomorrow

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 2nd, 2010

the_beaver_movie_image_jodie_foster_mel_gibson_slice_01

There’s been a great deal of discussion over how Summit Entertainment will handle Jodie Foster’s new film The Beaver ever since audio of Mel Gibson’s hate-filled tirades towards his ex-girlfriend ended up online.  There’s always cause for concern when the audience sees your lead actor and can hear him saying the words “You look like a fucking pig in heat and if you get raped by a pack of n***ers it will be your fault.”  It also doesn’t help if your crazy, racist lead actor is playing a character who treats the Beaver puppet on his hand like a living creature.
But Summit is pressing ahead and have now released the first official image from the film along with the official synopsis.  Hit the jump to check it out along with news about when the film may be hitting theaters.

According to Deadline, Summit is planning to release the film in spring 2011.  The studio (wisely) decided not to put it in for an awards-qualifying run and have decided that Springtime for Gibson is the best decision.  The trailer for the film is set to be released tomorrow.
Personally, I’m glad they’re not burying the film and sending it straight to DVD.  It’s an interesting premise and I still think Gibson’s a good actor.  I think as long as moviegoers are mature enough to acknowledge that they don’t have to like someone personally in order to appreciate their art, then The Beaver will do fine.  Of course the question then becomes, “How mature is the American moviegoing public?”  A recent CBS/Vanity Fair poll found that 76% of respondents said Gibson’s personal troubles would have no effect on whether they would see one of his movies.  We’ll see if that’s true when The Beaver hits next spring.  Click here to see the first poster.

28 High Res Images from Sofia Coppola’s SOMEWHERE

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 2nd, 2010

With writer/director Sofia Coppola’s (Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette), Somewhere opening later this month, Focus Features has released a ton of new images from the Golden Lion Award Winner for Best Picture at the 2010 Venice International Film Festival.  Here’s the official synopsis:
Somewhere is a witty, moving, and empathetic look into the orbit of actor Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff).  You have probably seen him in the tabloids; Johnny is living at the legendary Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood. He has a Ferrari to drive around in, and a constant stream of girls and pills to stay in with. Comfortably numbed, Johnny drifts along. Then, his 11-year-old daughter Cleo (Elle Fanning) from his failed marriage arrives unexpectedly at the Chateau. Their encounters encourage Johnny to face up to where he is in life and confront the question that we all must: which path in life will you take?
Hit the jump to check out the images.  You can also watch the trailer here.

While I’m under embargo from writing my thoughts, I think it’s safe to say Somewhere is like a younger sibling of Lost in Translation.  Meaning, if you liked Translation
