Rob Cohen to Direct Revenge Thriller BULLET RUN

by Brendan Bettinger  Posted: June 23rd, 2011

Rob Cohen has signed with Voltage Productions to direct the revenge thriller Bullet RunVariety provides an outline for the Andrew Hilton script:
[Bullet Run centers] on the head of an elite private protection team and his ex-CIA agent wife attempting to avenge their daughter’s murder by infiltrating Iran to bring the killer to justice. When the operation to extract their target goes awry, they must battle through 200 miles and 20,000 bullets while keeping alive the one man they want to kill.

Nicolas Chartier, Craig Flores, and Zev Foreman of Voltage will produce alongside Hilton.  Now that Cohen is on board, he will work with Hilton to develop the script after production wraps on I, Alex Cross.  I must confess I love 1) husband-and-wife spy teams and 2) the title Bullet Run.  With the right casting, this could be right up my alley. http://collider.com/rob-cohen-bullet-run/98462/

Emma Thompson in Talks to Write ANNIE Remake

by Brendan Bettinger   Posted: June 23rd, 2011

It’s been a few months since we last heard about the Annie remake, developed by Will Smith as a starring vehicle for daughter Willow.  At the time, Glee creator Ryan Murphy was mentioned as the frontrunner to direct.  Smith and co-producer Jay-Z probably missed the chance to squeeze the shoot into the Glee spring/summer production hiatus between season two and three.  To do so they would have needed a script.  On that front, Vulture hears Smith and Jay-Z are in negotiations Oscar-winning screenwriter Emma Thompson to write the musical.  Presumably, the topic came up as Smith and Thompson shared a break on the set of Men in Black III.
Vulture actively lobbies for Thompson to tailor the role of drunk orphanage director Miss Hannigan for Oscar-winning actor Emma Thompson; I co-sign.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the 1982 movie. http://collider.com/emma-thompson-annie-movie-remake/98457/

Ryan Gosling and Nicolas Winding Refn Talk LOGAN’S RUN

by Bill Graham   Posted: June 23rd, 2011

There are a handful of properties that beg for a remake that haven’t found the right combination to get it started. The latest team is star Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson), who think they have finally figured out the errors of the previously potential suitors. Since the mid-1990s, the Warner Bros. property has chewed up and spit out every director Joel Silver could attach to the film, including Carl Erik Rinsch in November. The 1976 original directed by Michael Anderson centered on a future society that put an age cap at 30 to help alleviate the threat of overpopulation and limited resources. A Sandman named Logan 5 has spent his entire life chasing down Runners, but suddenly becomes one himself in a mix up. For what Gosling and Refn think is the key to remaking Logan’s Run today, hit the jump. http://collider.com/ryan-gosling-nicolas-winding-refn-logans-run/98448/

Ryan Gosling Set to Reunite With Nicolas Winding Refn for ONLY GOD FORGIVES

by Bill Graham    Posted: June 23rd, 2011

Ryan Gosling has officially shot out of a cannon. The Blue Valentine star seems to be attached to a plethora of projects these days and he is already making of habit of working with Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine). Now he is in talks to reteam with Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of Gosling’s upcoming film Drive. Considering Ramses went bananas for Drive at the Los Angeles Film Festival, I think the two teaming up again is a good sign. Their new film is titled Only God Forgives and will also star Kristin Scott Thomas with a planned fall start date. However, Refn and Gosling aren’t stopping there. They are also headlining Warner Bros’ remake of Logan’s Run. For more on Only God Forgives and Gosling’s other projects, hit the jump. http://collider.com/ryan-gosling-only-god-forgives/98440/

New Posters for CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE., TERRA NOVA, and SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD

by Jason Barr  Posted: June 23rd, 2011

We have a plethora of new posters to bring you tonight from Crazy, Stupid, Love., Fox’s Terra Nova, and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. Beginning with Crazy, I’m looking forward to this pic because of its stellar cast and I’m a fan of these new posters because it gives me a heads up on which of the said cast members embody “Crazy,” “Stupid,” and “Love.” Starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Julianne Moore, and Marisa Tomei, Crazy, Stupid, Love. hits theaters on July 29th.
Next up, we have some very cool sheets from Fox’s and producer Steven Spielberg’s new sci-fi drama Terra Nova. Up until now, I was a little concerned that the series’ promo campaign was trying to look kind of like Avatar without looking exactly like Avatar. However, the three “Warning” messages on display here are pretty creative and stylish to boot. Fox just announced that Terra Nova will premiere on Monday, September 26th. Finally, we also have some new looks at Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, one of which is a character poster for a dog. Enough said. The Robert Rodriguez written/directed pic stars Jessica Alba, Antonio Banderas, Jeremy Piven, Danny Trejo, Alexa Vega, and Joel McHale. It opens in 3D on August 19th. Hit the jump to check out the new posters.

Seth Gordon to Reboot WARGAMES for MGM

by Jason Barr    Posted: June 23rd, 2011

Seth Gordon directed one of my favorite documentaries with 2007′s The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. Perhaps the fine folks over at MGM are fans of that pic as well because the studio has him handed the keys to another gaming-centric project: its WarGames reboot. According to Deadline, Gordon will develop the film with the intent to direct. For those unaware, 1983′s WarGames starred Matthew Broderick as a computer prodigy who takes pleasure in manipulating a military computer program only to find that the “game” could indeed launch real nuclear missiles, effectively beginning World War III. Directed by John Badham (Short Circuit), the film garnered three Oscar nods for “Best Sound,” “Best Cinematography,” and “Best Writing” respectively. In short, Green’s updated take has a lot to live up to.
WarGames becomes the third franchise to receive the “reboot treatment” from MGM which also has plans to resurrect RoboCop with director Jose Padilha and Carrie with playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. As for Gordon, he most recently directed Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Jamie Foxx, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, and Colin Farrel in the upcoming comedy Horrible Bosses. That pic hits theaters on July 8th.

Ryan Murphy Is the Frontrunner to Direct ANNIE Remake Starring Willow Smith

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: February 9th, 2011

A couple weeks ago, we reported that Will Smith and Jay-Z were teaming up to produce a “re-imagination” of the Broadway musical Annie starring Smith’s daughter Willow.  The young Smith already has an obnoxious pop single with “Whip My Hair” so she can apparently handle a musical.  Deadline is now reporting that Sony wants Glee creator Ryan Murphy to direct the flick.  For those unfamiliar with Annie, the story is set during the Great Depression and centers on a spunky 11-year-old redhead named Annie who is adopted by kindly billionaire Daddy Warbucks.  The musical was based on the comic Little Orphan Annie.  The character has traditionally been white, but nothing prevents the character from being black provided you move the time to post-integration.  Otherwise, if you keep it set during the Great Depression, it seems like you’re saying, “Black children have always been treated equally as white children!  What’s Jim Crow?”
Hit the jump for more on Murphy and his other potential projects.

Rooney Mara to Star in EMANUEL AND THE TRUTH ABOUT FISHES

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 9th, 2011

Soon-to-be (if not already) “it” girl Rooney Mara is set to reunite with her Tanner Hall director Francesca Gregorini on Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes. The film, also written by Gregorini, “centers around a young, troubled woman who becomes obsessed with her mysterious new neighbor that looks uncannily like her dead mother.” Gregorini made her feature film debut with 2009’s Tanner Hall, which was also one of Mara’s first major roles.
The Playlist reports that Emanuel is set to start shooting this summer with Paul Schiff producing. Mara is currently filming David Fincher’s highly anticipated adaptation of Steig Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Mara recently came to the public’s attention in a big way with her scene-stealing role as Mark Zuckerberg’s ex-girlfriend in The Social Network.

D.J. Caruso to Direct BEAT THE REAPER; Leonardo DiCaprio to Possibly Star

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 9th, 2011

Director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) is currently doing the press rounds for his upcoming sci-fi film I Am Number Four, and it looks like he’s already decided what his next project will be. Caruso is set to direct the film adaptation of Josh Bazell’s suspense novel Beat the Reaper for 20th Century Fox. Leonardo DiCaprio acquired the film rights to the novel through his production company Appian Way a couple of years ago. He’s currently set to produce, but The Playlist reports that Caruso and DiCaprio are now trying to figure out if DiCaprio will be available to star in the film as well.
Beat the Reaper tells the story of a former mobster-turned-doctor whose past comes back to haunt him and ends up trying to tie up loose ends. Brian Koppelman and David Levian (Ocean’s Thirteen) wrote the script. Reaper is apparently the first in a series of novels, so this could be the first in a franchise of films for Caruso and possibly DiCaprio if he signs on to star. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the book.

Anthony Hopkins Interview THE RITE; Plus Updates on THOR, 360, Composing Music, Painting, and a lot More

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: January 26th, 2011

Opening next weekend is director Mikael Hafstroem’s (1408) supernatural thriller The Rite and it stars Anthony Hopkins, Colin O’Donoghue, Alice Braga, Ciaran Hinds, and Toby Jones. “Inspired by true events, The Rite follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (O’Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith.”  For more on the film, watch some clips here.
I recently got to participate in a roundtable interview with Hopkins.  During the extended interview, Hopkins talked about what drew him to this project, how does he work with directors as most could be intimidated, how is he so good at scaring people, upcoming projects like Thor and 360, and he also talked about painting, composing music, and so much more.  Hit the jump to read or listen to what he had to say:

Will Smith and Jay-Z Team-Up for ANNIE Remake

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 26th, 2011

It’s official: the Will Smith/Jay-Z Annie remake is going into production.  One week ago, we reported that the pair were in talks to revamp the classic property as a starring vehicle for Smith’s daughter Willow.  At that time, however, it was believed that Jay-Z’s contribution would be confined to the film’s music.  The press release we received today, though, confirms that the self-proclaimed “best rapper alive” will team-up with Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment as a co-producer on the project.  In addition to Overbrook and Jay-Z’s (a.k.a. Shawn Carter) involvement, Sony Pictures Entertainment will help develop the Annie remake.
For more on the project, hit the jump to check out the full press release.

Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS Moves to June 8, 2012; Scott Brothers Set to Produce THE DRIVERS

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 26th, 2011

20th Century Fox has changed the release date for Ridley Scott’s original sci-fi film Prometheus.  Heat Vision confirms that the project, originally slated for a March 9th release, will now hit theaters on June 8th, 2012.  Although details regarding the film are currently sparse, we do know that Damon Lindelof (LostCowboys & Aliens) is currently re-working the script with Scott and that Noomi Rapace is set to star in the summer tentpole.
For the sake of context, it’s important to mention that news of Prometheus release date change comes not far removed from Disney’s announcement that its John Carter of Mars adaptation is now set for a March 9th release.  As for Scott, in addition to Prometheus, it was reported earlier today that he and brother Tony are using their Scott Free moniker to produce a 1960s period television series entitled The Drivers.  For more on that project, hit the jump.
