20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for Water for Elephants, the adaptation of the Sara Gruen novel of the same name directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend).  Robert Pattinson stars “a penniless and recently-orphaned veterinary school student [who] parlays his expertise with animals into a job with a second-rate traveling circus.”  He falls in love with one the star performers (Reese Witherspoon), who unfortunately happens to be married to an unbalanced ringleader (Christoph Waltz).  Watch the new trailer after the jump.

Today brings our first look at Shame, the latest collaboration between Hunger star Michael Fassbender and writer/director Steve McQueen.  Fassbender plays a New Yorker unable to manage his sex life: “After his wayward younger sister moves into his apartment, Brandon’s world spirals out of control.”  Carey Mulligan (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), James Badge Dale (Rubicon), and Nicole Beharie (The Express) also star.

Stunning Olly Moss Posters for Duncan Jones’ MOON and SOURCE CODE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 4th, 2011

Artist Olly Moss has created two gorgeous posters for Duncan Jones’ Moon and the director’s upcoming film Source Code.  The two posters are part of Mondo’s new “Director’s Series”.  The Source Code poster is so much better than the official one, which makes the movie look like it’s about a man who’s being attacked by iPads.
Both posters measure 18″x24″ and cost $35 each.  The Moon poster is limited to an edition of 250 while the Source Code poster is limited to an edition of 200.  Hit the jump to check out both of these beauties along with a statement on Duncan Jones about having his work added to Mondo’s Director Series.  Be sure you’re following @MondoNews for the sale date announcement.  Source Code will make its world premiere on March 11th at the SXSW Film Festival.  It opens nationwide on April 1st.

Pierce Brosnan Joins Susanne Bier’s ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 4th, 2011

Pierce Brosnan will star in Susanne Bier’s upcoming light-hearted romance movie All You Need Is Love.  Bier, who won an Oscar for In a Better World and is known more for her stark family melodramas, told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica that All You Need Is Love is “a tender story with a much lighter atmosphere than my previous works: Enough with conflicts.”  24 Frames reports that Bier wrote Brosnan’s role with the actor in mind.  Oddly, La Repubblica reports that the film will center on a Danish family, and Brosnan doesn’t speak the language.  However, it’s possible that movie is bilingual or that the Danish family will simply speak English.
I’ve found Brosnan to be a far more exciting actor ever since he broke free of James Bond.  Those films gave his profile a boost and he did a fine job, but he’s done far more memorable work since then in movies like The Matador, Seraphim Falls, and The Ghost Writer.  He recently joined the comedy I Don’t Know How She Does It and will next be seen in the religious comedy Salvation Boulevard.

New Poster and Banner for THOR (Updated)

Marvel has released two new posters for Kenneth Branagh’s Thor.  Taking a turn away from the previous posters of “Tall bearded man holds mallet”, these new posters give audiences what they really want: words over the actors’ faces.  Yes, whether you’re white, old, female, or black, the word “Thor” makes the perfect addition to your gigantic mug.
Hit the jump to check out the posters.  Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg, and Colm Feore.  The film opens in 3D on May 6th.
Update: Paramount has sent over high resolution versions of both posters

New Trailer for James Gunn’s SUPER Starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 4th, 2011

IFC has released a trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming superhero flick Super.  I like that the trailer has to animate over the language and violence in order to make it viewable for all-ages.  It’s a James Gunn movie and it’s best to expect something violent, twisted, and darkly comic.  Super looks like it’s going to deliver on all three counts and that makes me very excited to see this flick.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Super stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion.  It opens April 1st.

Brie Larson Lands Lead in 21 JUMP STREET

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: March 4th, 2011

Actress Brie Larson (The United States of Tara) has landed the female lead in 21 Jump Street. Deadline reports that Larson will take over the role that Emma Stone previously was forced to vacate to make time in her schedule for The Amazing Spider-Man. Larson joins a cast that includes Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Ice Cube. Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs), the film is being written by Michael Bacall (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World). Hill also worked on the story and described the update as “a John Hughes movie with ‘Bad Boys’ style action.” 21 Jump Street begins shooting in April and is slated for a March 16th, 2012 release.

Set Videos From Rian Johnson’s LOOPER

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 20th, 2011

Rian Johnson’s highly anticipated film Looper is currently shooting in New Orleans and some videos of the set have recently hit the web. Johnson’s previous two films, 2005’s Brick and 2009’s The Brothers Bloom were both outstanding and I think it’s safe to say fans are itching to see what he has in store for us next. The sci-fi flick stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt and concerns hitmen (“loopers”) who use time-travel to cover the tracks of their murders. Hit the jump to check out the videos, and if you missed them, be sure to check out the set images from a few weeks back. http://collider.com/looper-set-video/77100/

Halle Berry Says the Wachowskis’ Adaptation of CLOUD ATLAS Will Shoot Next Summer

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 29th, 2010

Back in September, we reported that the Wachowski Siblings were working on a mysterious project called Cobalt Neural but were also eyeing the director’s chair for an adaptation of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas with Tom Hanks, Natalie Portman, and Halle Berry attached to star.  At a Q&A following a screening of Berry’s new film Frankie & Alice for the 42nd NAACP Image Awards, the actress said that she’s planning to shoot Cloud Atlas in the summer.  Hit the jump for Berry’s quote and more on Cloud Atlas.

Here’s what Berry said regarding Cloud Atlas [via The Playlist]:
“I’m going to do a movie probably in the summer with the Wachowskis…..A really interesting movie [that is] sort of [like] what they did for ‘The Matrix,’ they have another really amazing idea that’s sort of gonna stretch our brains even further. And so I’m really excited about that and that’s probably gonna be in the summer. And that’s with Tom Hanks and Natalie Portman.”
As we previously reported, Tom Twyker (Run Lola Run) is handling the script and the Wachowskis are producing and possibly directing a few of the novel’s six interlocking story-lines.  Here’s the synopsis for Mitchell’s novel:
A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan’s California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified “dinery server” on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation — the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other’s echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small.
In his captivating third novel, David Mitchell erases the boundaries of language, genre and time to offer a meditation on humanity’s dangerous will to power, and where it may lead us.
Ian McKellen and James McAvoy have also been mentioned in connection to the adaptation, but as far as we know, neither is attached at this point.

Carey Mulligan and James Badge Dale Possibly Co-Starring with Michael Fassbender in SHAME

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 29th, 2010

carey_mulligan_james_badge_dale_slice_01
Shame, Steve McQueen’s follow-up to Hunger, has picked up two more talented actors.  According to The Irish Film & Television Network [via The Playlist], Carey Mulligan and James Badge Dale (Rubicon) have joined Michael Fassbender in the drama, which centers on Brandon (Fassbender), a Manhattan office worker with a sex addiction.  The Playlist reports that a look at the script leads them to believe that Mulligan is likely to play Sissy, Brandon’s sister, although she might be playing Marianne, a co-worker of Brandon’s that he begins a relationship with.  Dale is likely to be playing Brandon’s boss, David.
IFTN also reports that McQueen will be re-teaming with his Hunger cinematographer Sean Bobbit.  Shame is schedule to shoot for six weeks in New York with a release in the UK scheduled for late 2011.  Mulligan is currently wrapping work on Nicholas Winding Refn’s Drive and will presumably shoot Shame before moving on to play Daisy in Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby.  She’s also attached to star in Violet & Daisy and Park Chan-Wook’s Stoker.

James Franco and Anne Hathaway to Host the Oscars

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 29th, 2010

Last year, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin took the stage at the Academy Awards and did a great job hosting.  Now there’s a rumor that the Academy may be going for co-hosting again but with James Franco and Anne Hathaway.  Deadline is reporting that the pair has accepted the gig and an official announcement could be made this week.  However, I’m in agreement with Awards Daily that this rumor is bunk.  While Franco and Hathaway are charming, it’s tough to see them as a draw for expanding the show’s dwindling audience.  However, it would be interesting to see the Oscars hire a host who is likely to receive an Oscar nomination (Franco for 127 Hours).  While I think Franco and Hathaway could do a great job, I’m remaining skeptical.  Click here to see Hugh Jackman’s wonderful opening number with Hathaway from two years ago.
Update: So much for my skepticism.  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that James Franco and Anne Hathaway will host the 83rd Academy Awards.  Best of luck to them both.  Hit the jump for the press release.
Here’s the press release:
JAMES FRANCO AND ANNE HATHAWAY To Host Oscars® Show
James Franco and Anne Hathaway will serve as co-hosts of the 83rd Academy Awards®, Oscars telecast producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer announced today. Both have previously appeared on the telecast but not in hosting capacities.

We hope to create an Oscars broadcast that will both showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world on February 27,” said Cohen and Mischer. “We are completely thrilled that James and Anne will be joining forces with our brilliant creative team to do just that.”
Franco, who currently can be seen in “127 Hours,” will be making his second appearance on an Oscars telecast. His other film credits include “Eat, Pray, Love” “Date Night,” “Milk” and “Pineapple Express.” He is also known for his portrayal of Harry Osborn in the “Spider-Man” trilogy.
Hathaway will be making her fifth appearance on an Academy Awards telecast. She was recently seen in “Alice in Wonderland” and currently can be seen in “Love and Other Drugs.” Her other film credits include “Bride Wars,” “Becoming Jane,” “The Devil Wears Prada” and “The Princess Diaries.” Hathaway was nominated for an Oscar in 2008 for her lead performance in “Rachel Getting Married.”
