THE WOLF OF WALL STREET Starring Leonardo DiCaprio Lands at Red Granite Pictures, Martin Scorsese No Longer Directing

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 10:23 am

It’s been a very long road for the adaptation of Jordan Belfort’s 2008 memoir The Wolf of Wall Street. Originally, Leonardo DiCaprio was to produce and star in the film with Martin Scorsese directing. When production stalled, the two made Shutter Island instead. Then Ridley Scott came aboard the film as director last summer, only to be replaced by Scorsese again in February, when we learned that Warner Bros. had dropped the project and producers were now moving forward with independent financing. Now, The Playlist reports that indie Red Granite Pictures has picked up the rights to the project, with DiCaprio’s Appian Way still producing.
The report also states that Scorsese has moved on from the project. The director is expected to helm his long-in-gestation 17th century Jesuit priest drama Silence after he finishes post production on Hugo Cabret. The script for Wolf of Wall Street was written by Sopranos writer (and Boardwalk Empire creator) Terrence Winter and tells the story of stockbroker excess in the 1990s. No word on when filming would begin, but with DiCaprio shooting The Great Gatsby later this year I wouldn’t expect any movement before sometime in 2012. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of Belfort’s memoir.

First Clip from Lars Von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA

by Phil Brown    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 10:38 am

What better way could there be to celebrate a Wednesday than by watching a deeply depressing clip from an upcoming movie? And what filmmaker could fuel that mid-week depression better than Lars Von Trier? The eccentric Danish Dogme founder will be making his regular appearance at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival this year with his latest feature Melancholia, and will inevitably cause a media shitstorm of controversy as he does every time he walks the Croisette.
Today a new clip from the appropriately titled Melancholia has found its way to the internet, depicting a tearful Kristen Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg discussing the evil nature of earth. It should give you a sense of the tone of Von Trier’s impending apocalyptic tale and darken the mood of the rest of your day in less than a minute. In other words, it’s vintage Von Trier. The film will premiere in Cannes later this month with plans for a November North American release from Magnolia Pictures (expect it to make the summer/fall film festival run first). Melancholia stars Dunst, Gainsbourg, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgard, and Udo Kier. Hit the jump to check out the clip.

Katie Aselton to Direct and Star in BLACK ROCK Alongside Kate Bosworth and Lake Bell

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 11:26 am

Actress Katie Aselton is set to direct and star in the thriller Black Rock. Lake Bell and Kate Bosworth have signed on to co-star in the film which was conceived by Aselton and written by Mark Duplass (Cyrus). The story centers on “three childhood friends who embark on a weekend getaway to the isolated island of Black Rock, only to discover that they are not alone.” While that may sound like your standard thriller, with indie-staple Duplass writing the screenplay you can pretty much bet on it being something wholly original.
As an actress, Aselton has worked on FX’s The League and appears in the upcoming Paul Rudd indie comedy Our Idiot Brother. Submarine is handling U.S. and international sales at Cannes, with a portion of the film’s funding being crowd-sourced through Kickstarter. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Hugo Weaving and Ben Whishaw Join the Wachowskis’ CLOUD ATLAS, Halle Berry Confirmed to Star

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 11:53 am

As production nears closer for the big-budget adaptation of Cloud Atlas, the cast is starting to come together. Last month, Tom Hanks was confirmed to star in the adaptation that will be directed by the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run). Now, THR reports that Hugo Weaving and Ben Whishaw (I’m Not There) have joined the cast. The report also confirms earlier rumors that Halle Berry will indeed appear in the film.
No word on which roles the actors will take on at the moment, but production is set to begin this fall. Warner Bros. is releasing the film in North America and Focus Features International is currently looking for buyers at Cannes. The Wachowskis and Twyker are writing the film as well as directing. Hit the jump to read the synopsis for David Mitchell’s novel.

Trailer for Lars Von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA Starring Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: April 8th, 2011

melancholia-movie-image-kirsten-dunst-slice-01
What’s wonderful about director Lars von Trier’s films is that you never know what to expect.  Sometimes the outcome works and other times it doesn’t, but it will be a film-going experience unlike any other.  For example, his latest film Melancholia picks up from a normal, relatable setting—a wedding—and then goes totally batshit from there with a newly discovered planet that might collide with Earth.  Melancholia is billed as “a psychological disaster movie” and “a beautiful movie about the end of the world”. Also, going by the trailer, Kirsten Dunst might have super powers.  I have no idea what to make of Melancholia, and I can’t wait to see it.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

New HESHER Trailer Cut by Writer/Director Spencer Susser

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: April 8th, 2011

Most directors don’t cut trailers for their own movies.  They don’t have the time and studios pay millions of dollars to companies whose sole purpose is to cut a trailer that will appeal to the widest audience possible regardless of whether or not that trailer is an accurate representation of the movie it’s marketing.  But that is not so with the official trailer for Hesher that was cut by the film’s writer and director Spencer Susser.  If I can judge Hesher by its trailer, then I’ll have no idea what to make of Hesher but at least it’s an accurate misunderstanding.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer and a statement of support by star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  The film also stars Devin Brochu, Rainn Wilson, and Natalie Portman.  Hesher opens May 13th. .............more;

Dave Franco Joins 21 JUMP STREET; Plans Being Made for Johnny Depp Cameo

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 8th, 2011

Hot off the heels of the news that Rob Riggle is in talks to play a villain in the upcoming 21 Jump Street movie, Dave Franco has joined the cast as one of the villains as well. Deadline reports that Franco will star as Eric, “the most popular kid in school.” Eric is a drug dealer at the high school that the characters played by Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum infiltrate as undercover cops. Hill befriends Franco’s character in order to get close to the “cool kid” crowd. I’m not exactly sure how Riggle fits into the equation villain-wise, but it makes sense to have a more significant bad guy in the film in addition to the “douche high school drug dealer.”
Additionally, with production on the film fast approaching, serious plans are now being made for Johnny Depp to cameo in the film based on the TV show that launched his career. While it’s uncertain what role he would play, apparently producers are working on getting the actor on set to shoot a quick scene.  Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the film stars Hill, Tatum, Ice Cube and Brie Larson. 21 Jump Street hits theaters on March 16th, 2012.

ALL GOOD THINGS Blu-ray Review

by Harrison Pierce    Posted: April 8th, 2011

all_good_things_movie_poster_slice_01
All Good Things falls into the tricky subgenre of unsolved crime drama. Whether handled expertly, as in the case of David Fincher’s Zodiac, or sloppily, as in Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia, there’s something inherently dissatisfying about these films. Perhaps it’s because, on a primal level, we prefer our monsters caught and killed. Ancient myths were certainly never built on ambiguity and irresolution. Then again, ancient listeners never had the chance to watch a Blu-ray like Magnolia’s All Good Things, which not only includes the speculative story of a possibly monstrous human being, but also a fascinatingly bizarre audio commentary from the possible monster himself, Robert Durst. My review after the jump.

Tim Miller Set to Direct DEADPOOL

by Adam Chitwood  Posted: April 8th, 2011

The long-gestating film version of the comic-book Deadpool finally has a director in place. Deadline reports that visual effects guru Tim Miller has been tapped by 20th Century Fox to direct X-Men Origins: Deadpool. Miller will make his directorial debut on the film, having previously done visual-effects work on films like X-Men, X2 and Daredevil.
Ryan Reynolds has long been set to play the lead in the film, having portrayed the “Merc with a Mouth” in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, producer Lauren Shuler Donner recently stated that the Deadpool film will be a reboot and won’t acknowledge the events that took place in Wolverine. Hit the jump for more on Deadpool. http://collider.com/tim-miller-deadpool/85118/
