THE WOLF OF WALL STREET Starring Leonardo DiCaprio Lands at Red Granite Pictures, Martin Scorsese No Longer Directing

It’s been a very long road for the adaptation of Jordan Belfort’s 2008 memoir The Wolf of Wall Street. Originally, Leonardo DiCaprio was to produce and star in the film with Martin Scorsese directing. When production stalled, the two made Shutter Island instead. Then Ridley Scott came aboard the film as director last summer, only to be replaced by Scorsese again in February, when we learned that Warner Bros. had dropped the project and producers were now moving forward with independent financing. Now, The Playlist reports that indie Red Granite Pictures has picked up the rights to the project, with DiCaprio’s Appian Way still producing.
The report also states that Scorsese has moved on from the project. The director is expected to helm his long-in-gestation 17^th century Jesuit priest drama Silence after he finishes post production on Hugo Cabret. The script for Wolf of Wall Street was written by Sopranos writer (and Boardwalk Empire creator) Terrence Winter and tells the story of stockbroker excess in the 1990s. No word on when filming would begin, but with DiCaprio shooting The Great Gatsby later this year I wouldn’t expect any movement before sometime in 2012. First Clip from Lars Von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA

What better way could there be to celebrate a Wednesday than by watching a deeply depressing clip from an upcoming movie? And what filmmaker could fuel that mid-week depression better than Lars Von Trier? The eccentric Danish Dogme founder will be making his regular appearance at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival this year with his latest feature Melancholia, and will inevitably cause a media shitstorm of controversy as he does every time he walks the Croisette.
Today a new clip from the appropriately titled Melancholia has found its way to the internet, depicting a tearful Kristen Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg discussing the evil nature of earth. It should give you a sense of the tone of Von Trier’s impending apocalyptic tale and darken the mood of the rest of your day in less than a minute. In other words, it’s vintage Von Trier. The film will premiere in Cannes later this month with plans for a November North American release from Magnolia Pictures (expect it to make the summer/fall film festival run first). Melancholia stars Dunst, Gainsbourg, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgard, and Udo Kier. Hit the jump to check out the clip.

Katie Aselton to Direct and Star in BLACK ROCK Alongside Kate Bosworth and Lake Bell

Actress Katie Aselton is set to direct and star in the thriller Black Rock. Lake Bell and Kate Bosworth have signed on to co-star in the film which was conceived by Aselton and written by Mark Duplass (Cyrus). The story centers on “three childhood friends who embark on a weekend getaway to the isolated island of Black Rock, only to discover that they are not alone.” While that may sound like your standard thriller, with indie-staple Duplass writing the screenplay you can pretty much bet on it being something wholly original.
As an actress, Aselton has worked on FX’s The League and appears in the upcoming Paul Rudd indie comedy Our Idiot Brother. Submarine is handling U.S. and international sales at Cannes, with a portion of the film’s funding being crowd-sourced through Kickstarter. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Hugo Weaving and Ben Whishaw Join the Wachowskis’ CLOUD ATLAS, Halle Berry Confirmed to Star

As production nears closer for the big-budget adaptation of Cloud Atlas, the cast is starting to come together. Last month, Tom Hanks was confirmed to star in the adaptation that will be directed by the Wachowski siblings and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run). Now, THR reports that Hugo Weaving and Ben Whishaw (I’m Not There) have joined the cast. The report also confirms earlier rumors that Halle Berry will indeed appear in the film.
No word on which roles the actors will take on at the moment, but production is set to begin this fall. Warner Bros. is releasing the film in North America and Focus Features International is currently looking for buyers at Cannes. The Wachowskis and Twyker are writing the film as well as directing. Martin Scorsese to Direct Leonardo DiCaprio in THE WOLF OF WALL STREET; Filming Could Start in June [UPDATED]

It looks like director Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio will be re-teaming once more, this time on an indie film. The duo will tackle the adaptation of Jordan Belfort’s 2008 memoir The Wolf of Wall Street. Ridley Scott was previously set up to direct the film with DiCaprio for Warner Bros., but apparently DiCaprio’s manager was able to secure independent financing for the project and will now shoot the flick sans-studio.

Scorsese is currently busy finishing up his 3D family film Hugo Cabret, but Vulture reports that with financing secured, filming could commence on the 1990’s stockbroker success story as early as June. Terrence Winter, creator/executive producer of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire (for which Scorsese directed the pilot, and is also a producer), wrote the screenplay for Wall Street, so it looks to be a cracker-jack team lined up for the flick. Casting Call: Alice Eve Joins MIB III, Carla Gugino and Halle Berry Board NEW YEAR’S EVE

A couple of casting stories for you this evening. Following the news that Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black III won’t be resuming production for another month due to script issues, Alice Eve has been cast in the flick. Deadline reports that she will play the young version of Emma Thompson’s character. The plot of the film involves Will Smith’s character traveling back in time to team up with a young version of Tommy Lee Jones’ character (played by Josh Brolin) to, obviously, save the world. The 3D film is slated for May 25^th, 2012.

Just when you thought the cast of Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve, couldn’t get any bigger, two more names have been added to the mix. Carla Gugino stars as a doctor in the pseudo-sequel to last year’s Valentine’s Day, per THR, and Halle Berry is taking on an unspecified role. Berry was previously attached to the film, then dropped out, but now is back in again. The Wrap reports that she’s taking on a different role this time. The film features a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Zac Efron, etc. It hits theaters on December 9^th.

Martin Scorsese’s Next Film to be Jesuit Priest Drama SILENCE Possibly Starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro

Well, that was fast. We recently reported that director Martin Scorsese is attached to direct the stockbroker drama The Wolf of Wall Street with Leonardo DiCaprio set to star, with filming possibly starting as soon as June. It appears the presumption that Wall Street would be Scorsese’s next film was a bit premature. Now it looks like the director’s next project after he wraps his family film Hugo Cabret is the long-gestating drama Silence, about two 17^th century Jesuit priests facing persecution in Japan.

Daniel Day-Lewis, Benicio Del Toro and Gael Garcia Bernal have all previously been set to star in the film, but The Playlist reports that their status with the project ambiguous at the moment. They did, however, confirm that this will be Scorsese’s next film. This is one of those projects that Scorsese has been flirting with for a while, and I’m fairly certain the entire film community would love to see it finally get made, especially with that cast.
