John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, Robert Patrick and Ray Stevenson Join Billy Bob Thornton’s JAYNE MANSFIELD’S CAR

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 14th, 2011

Billy Bob Thornton hasn’t directed a feature film since 2001’s Daddy and Them. Well, last November Thornton broke the news to us that he was once again stepping back into the director’s chair on a film he co-wrote with his writing partner Tom Epperson called Jayne Mansfield’s Car. Now it looks like Thornton is ready to start shooting on the project, as he’s secured funding and has filled out his cast with John Hurt, Kevin Bacon, Robert Patrick, Ray Stevenson (Thor) and John Patrick Amedori (The Butterfly Effect) joining previously announced Robert Duvall.
Deadline reports that AR Films is funding the project, which is set to start shooting on June 22nd in Georgia. The story revolves around a guy whose wife leaves him for an Englishman and moves away to England. 20 or 30 years later, in 1969, the wife dies but wishes to be returned to Alabama where she grew up, so the English family meets—and clashes with—the original family that she abandoned. While Thornton’s All the Pretty Horses left much to be desired, Sling Blade was a bit of a masterwork. Hopefully he can recapture that magic with this southern tale. http://collider.com/john-hurt-kevin-bacon-jayne-mansfields-car/96415/

Anna Kendrick and Natalie Martinez Join END OF WATCH Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 14th, 2011

Anna Kendrick (Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) and Natalie Martinez (Death Race) are in talks to star in the gritty cop drama End of Watch. Directed by David Ayers (Street Kings), the two will join a bald-headed Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. Ayers directs from a script that he wrote, which centers on the friendship between two seasoned police officers in Los Angeles. Variety reports that the actresses will play the love interests of Gyllenhaal and Peña, though doesn’t state which actress is paired up with which actor.
Ayer is no stranger to cop dramas, having made his directorial debut with 2005’s Harsh Times. He also penned the screenplays for The Fast and the Furious, Training Day and S.W.A.T. I’m a big fan of Kendrick’s, and Gyllenhaal can be great with good material, so hopefully everything comes together for End of Watch. http://collider.com/anna-kendrick-end-of-watch-natalie-martinez/96410/

Matthew Fox and Ed Harris Join WORLD WAR Z

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 14th, 2011

With production set to begin this month, Marc Forster’s adaptation of Max Brooks’ World War Z continues to fill out its cast.  Bloody Disgusting reports that Matthew Fox is now on board while Deadline adds that Ed Harris is in talks to join him.  The zombie-action flick also stars Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos (The Killing), Anthony Mackie, Julia Levy-Boeken, and James Badge Dale.  BD reports that Fox will play “Parajumper” while Harris role is currently unknown.  The book takes place ten years after a zombie apocalypse but since Paramount sees the property as a tentpole, it will be repurposed into a PG-13 action movie.
Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.  Fox is also attached to play the villain in Rob Cohen’s adaptation of I, Alex Cross starring Tyler Perry.  Harris is playing John McCain in Game Change and he’s attached to co-star with Aaron Eckhart in Neil Labute’s The Geography of Hope. http://collider.com/world-war-z-matthew-fox-ed-harris/96353/

Michelle Williams Covers 'Interview' May 2011
Michelle Williams graces the cover of Interview magazine’s May 2011 issue, on newsstands in New York and L.A. Tuesday (April 26) and nationwide on May 3.
Here’s what the 30-year-old Meek’s Cutoff actress, who wore a Celine sweater, had to share:
On shooting the film in Oregon in the heat and in heavy costumes:“I know! The dresses . . . I miss that. The only part of your body left exposed to the sun were your hands. My hands have aged at a rate disproportionate to the rest of my body because of being out there in the hot sun for two months. You couldn’t keep sunscreen on your hands; you were just sort of filthy all the time.”
On how she and Ryan Gosling prepared for the second half of Blue Valentine: “We spent the first couple of weeks in the house just doing the dishes and making meals, taking out the trash and balancing out the budget and making home movies. But that wasn’t getting us to the place that we needed to go, so [director Derek Cianfrance] had us step it up, and he would ask us to pick fights with each other….First he did this ceremony where he had wedding pictures taken of us, and he took a framed wedding picture and put it in a wheelbarrow with fireworks that we bought at the grocery store, and he doused it with kerosene and we lit it on fire and watched it burn. But the crazy thing is, it didn’t burn all the way—it burned into a heart around our faces, around our kiss. He couldn’t destroy it.”

Sam Raimi Fighting with Disney to Cast Hilary Swank in OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL

by Adam Chitwood   Posted: April 22nd, 2011

While he’s working on filling out the rest of his cast for Oz, the Great and Powerful, director Sam Raimi is having a little trouble getting Disney on the same page. James Franco is currently set to star as the Wizard in this prequel to 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, with Mila Kunis attached to play Theodora (the Wicked Witch of the West). Raimi wants Hilary Swank to join the cast as one of the elder witches in the film, but apparently Disney is none too keen on that casting choice. Vulture reports that the Mouse House is pushing Raimi to cast Michelle Williams in the role instead, but Raimi doesn’t seem eager to budge.
The report points out that the director ran into a similar problem on the first Spider-Man flick, when Sony wanted him to cast American Beauty star Wes Bentley as Peter Parker. Obviously Raimi won out on that film, but can he convince Disney otherwise this time? Hit the jump for more.

Awesome New Teaser Posters for 30 MINUTES OR LESS

by Adam Chitwood Posted: April 22nd, 2011

30-minutes-or-less-poster-slice
A couple of new teaser posters for Ruben Fleischer’s (Zombieland) heist comedy 30 Minutes or Less have been released and they’re absolutely fantastic. The red-band trailer for the film was released yesterday, and these posters echo the smart comedic draw that the trailer teased (ie. Wit in lieu of fatty-fall-down jokes). I really love how the posters hide the faces of the characters, but show just enough to get their personalities across.
The film stars Jesse Eisenberg as a hapless pizza delivery guy who is kidnapped by two wanna-be criminal masterminds (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) and forced to rob a bank. Aziz Ansari and Michael Peña also star. 30 Minutes or Less opens on August 12th. Hit the jump to check out the posters.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña have signed on to star as seasoned police partners in End of Watch, described as a “gritty cop drama.”  I’m not entirely sure when writer/director David Ayer (Street Kings) will shoot the movie: Gyllenhaal told Access Hollywood he’s “about to start” work; Movie Insider lists Los Angeles as a location scheduled for July 6.  But we have an early look at Peña and a very bald Gyllenhaal in uniform for a promotional photo shoot for End of Watch.  Hit the jump to see the images.

Kirsten Dunst and Sofia Coppola Reunite for SECRET DOOR

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: April 24th, 2011

Director Sofia Coppola is about to start work on her fifth feature film, titled Secret Door, which will establish a neat pattern: every other film stars Kirsten Dunst.  Dunst starred in Coppola’s debut The Virgin Suicides and movie three Marie Antoinette — American Zoetrope, the production company run by father Francis Ford Coppola, announced on Twitter [via The Playlist] that Dunst will join Secret Door:
Happy to announce that Kirsten Dunst has agreed to be in Sofia Coppola’s new film ‘Secret Door’. Script is still being finished. Stay tuned!
I enjoy all of Coppola’s previous films, though I think you could develop a Star Trek-style theory that the even ones are better, primarily because of the overwhelming quality of Bill Murray in Lost in Translation, secondarily because last year’s Somewhere > Marie Antoinette.  That silly combinatorics won’t keep me from being excited for Secret Door.  Hopefully, “Stay tuned!” means Zoetrope will reveal more on story or casting later in the week when Hollywood returns from Easter weekend.
Dunst will next be seen in Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia, which premieres at the Cannes Film Festival in May.  Recently, Dunst was part of the ensemble that adapted On the Road, and starred opposite Jim Sturgess in the romance Upside Down.

First Trailer for THE HELP Plus 3 New Images

Disney has released the first trailer for The Help, based on the bestselling book by Kathryn Stockett.  Set in Mississippi during the civil rights movement of the early 1960s, The Help tells the story of three women: recent college graduate Skeeter (Emma Stone), wise black maid Aibileen (Viola Davis), and Aibileen’s sassy best friend Minny (Ocatvia Spencer).  The threesome “come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk.”  Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Lowell, Anna Camp, Ahna O Reilly, and Allison Janney also star.  Tate Taylor wrote and directed the adaptation.
The Help opens August 12.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

New Image of Colin Farrell in FRIGHT NIGHT

DreamWorks has released a new image of Colin Farrell in director Craig Gillespie’s (who is now confirmed to helm Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies) 3D remake of Fright Night. In addition to Farrell, Fright Night also stars Anton Yelchin, David Tennant, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Imogen Poots, Toni Collette, and Dave Franco. Like the 1985 original, the film tells the story of a teen (Yelchin) who discovers that his neighbor (Farrell) is a vampire who, by the looks of this new image, is incredibly at ease with the idea of biting the necks of girls rocking hoop earrings. Fright Night hits theaters this summer on August 19th. Hit the jump to check out the new image.

Elizabeth Banks Negotiating THE HUNGER GAMES

by Jason Barr   Posted: April 18th, 2011

Elizabeth Banks is reportedly in talks to join Gary Ross’ adaptation of The Hunger Games. Per Variety, the actress is negotiating a deal that would see her play the role of Effie Trinket, a “flaky bureaucrat who escorts her district’s young death-match contestants to their fate.” If the deal goes through, Banks will join a cast that already includes Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth. Earlier today, Dayo Okeniyi and Amanda Stenberg became official members of Ross’ cast as well.
Based on the novel by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games is set in a dystopian “Capitol” that forces its districts to offer up teenage boys and girls as participants in a televised fight-to-the-death event known as “The Hunger Games.” Ross’ film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 23rd, 2012. Casting Call: Joshua Jackson to LAY THE FAVORITE; THE FIRST TIME for Victoria Justice, Craig Roberts, Dylan O’Brien; Michael Peña at END OF WATCH

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: April 18th, 2011

Joshua Jackson (Fringe) is in talks to star opposite Bruce Willis and Rebecca Hall in Lay the Favorite, based on the life of Beth Raymer.  Once a Las Vegas cocktail waitress, Raymer became an elite professional gambler: “After falling in love, Raymer soon begins to re-evaluate her life and the profession she has chosen.”  Hall will portray Raymer — Willis will play her gambling mentor Dink Heimowitz.  Last we checked, Catherine Zeta-Jones was in talks to play Willis’ wife in the film.  Variety doesn’t specify in their report, but my instinct says Jackson is up for the love interest.  Lay the Favorite reunites director Stephen Frears (Tamara Drewe) with his High Fidelity screenwriter D.V. DeVincentis.
Hit the jump for more casting news, wherein Victoria Jackson, James Frecheville, and Craig Roberts join The First Time, and Michael Peña enters negotiations for End of Watch.

Jennifer Lawrence and Hailee Steinfeld Up for Lead in THE HUNGER GAMES [UPDATED]
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 4:48 pm

To say that director Gary Ross’ (Pleasantville) adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games is being followed closely by fans is a bit of an understatement. Absolutely pivotal to the success of the film adaptation is the casting of the series’ lead role of Katniss. When describing what they were looking for in actresses for the role, Ross previously stated that what makes the character attractive is her strength, assuredness, defiance “and ultimately her compassion.”

The powers that be are currently searching for the right actress, and now word comes that two of this year’s Academy Award nominees, Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) are in the running. Speaking with MTV, Steinfeld confirmed that she’s met with Ross to discuss the role. For much more, including why Lawrence may be the frontrunner, hit the jump. [Update: Variety has confirmed that Lawrence and Steinfeld are vying for the role, with Lawrence generating the most interest. They also add 14-year-old Abigail Breslin to the list of actresses being considered for the part of Katniss.]

Warner Bros. Based Alcon Entertainment Eyes Rights to BLADE RUNNER Prequels and Sequels
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 5:05 pm

Alcon Entertainment, the Warner Bros. based financing and production company is now in final negotiations to acquire the rights to “film, television and ancillary” rights to produced sequels to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner. Though the deal prevents them from directly remaking the original film, Alcon would be free to produce as many sequels and prequels involving the film’s universe as they like. Alcon co-founders/co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove had this to say:

“We are honored and excited to be in business with Bud Yorkin. This is a major acquisition for our company, and a personal favorite film for both of us. We recognize the responsibility we have to do justice to the memory of the original with any prequel or sequel we produce. We have long-term goals for the franchise, and are exploring multi-platform concepts, not just limiting ourselves to one medium only.”

If Alcon is spending all that money to nab the rights, you can bet that they definitely have a sequel/prequel story in mind. Only time will tell what it will involve/how closely related it will be to Scott’s original. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Possible Titles for Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT Revealed
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 7:10 pm

Director Peter Jackson is finally returning to Middle Earth later this month when filming begins on the two-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit. While most assumed that the two-parter would simply be titled “The Hobbit”, it looks like there may in fact be a subtitle. TheOneRing.net was hipped to the fact that New Line Cinema recently registered two film titles: The Hobbit: There and Back Again and The Hobbit: An/The Unexpected Journey.

These sound about right. Though, when you tack on the Part One and Part Two, the titles become rather long (I guess Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring isn’t exactly curt). Nevertheless, Peter Jackson is directing The Hobbit, Howard Shore is returning for the score, and the cast includes Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis, Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood, and many more. Shot in 3D, the first part of The Hobbit is slated for a December 2012 release, with the second part following a year later in December 2013.

Jake Gyllenhaal in Talks to Headline David Ayer Cop Drama END OF WATCH
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 7:27 pm

Jake Gyllenhaal is in early discussions to star in End of Watch, a gritty cop drama written and directed by David Ayer (Street Kings). Details are scarce, but Variety reports the story centers on the friendship between seasoned partners. Ayer will produce End of Watch with John Lesher; they’re currently putting together financing for the film. No word yet on a potential production date, nor who might play the other partner. The report descri

Gyllenhaal was recently mentioned as one of fifteen candidates for the lead role in The Bourne Legacy. Assuming Universal restricts their consideration to those 15 (they won’t), Gyllenhaal only has a 7% chance at the role. Apart from the generic title, End of Watch sounds like a fine backup plan, and there’s even a role set aside for a fellow Bourne reject. Gyllenhaal will next be seen in Source Code, which opens April 1.

Diane Lane Will Play Martha Kent in SUPERMAN
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 2nd, 2011 at 8:24 pm

Diane Lane has signed on to play Martha Kent in the Zack Snyder-directed Superman movie. Snyder said in a statement:

“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

Henry Cavill (The Tudors) will star as Clark Kent/Superman. Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are producers on the film. David S. Goyer is writing the screenplay based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. The untitled Superman film is scheduled for a December 2012 release. Hit the jump for more on possible stars/characters.
