David Strathairn, Molly Parker, Parker Posey, Rodrigo Santoro, Tony Shalhoub, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, Santiago Cabrera, Saverio Guerra, Peter Coyote, and Diane Baker have joined the cast of Hemingway & Gellhorn. The HBO film tells the story of Ernest Hemingway (played by Clive Owen) and Martha Gellhorn (Nicole Kidman), two literary minds who challenged each other throughout a “tumultuous romance and subsequent five-year marriage.” (Gellhorn reportedly inspired one of Hemingway’s most acclaimed novels, For Whom the Bell Tolls.) Philip Kaufman (Quills) is set to direct; James Gandolfini will executive produce.

THE SCIENCE OF COOL Films This Summer With Mischa Barton, Willa Holland, Steve Guttenberg, More
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 10th, 2011
Humanistic Films has announced a summer 2011 start date for the high school movie The Science of Cool. Steve Guttenberg, Kiowa Gordon (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), and Eden Sher (The Middle) have joined the cast, which includes The O.C. co-stars Mischa Barton and Willa Holland, Drew Van Acker (Tower Prep), Guy Kent (The Day the Music Died), Matt Dallas (Kyle XY), and Rumer Willis (Sorority Row). The plot centers on “two high school nerds who discover a secret chemical formula when a science experiment goes terribly wrong that transforms them into the coolest kids in school; but with greatness comes great consequences.”

The film has been in development for a few years now — Eric and Patricia Goren first wrote the script in 2008. At one point Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) and Jeremy Sumpter (Friday Night Lights) were attached, but sadly both dropped out due to prior commitments. William Zabka is on board to direct.

Robert Luketic to Direct Heist Film BRILLIANT
by Brendan Bettinger Posted: March 10th, 2011
Robert Luketic (Killers) has signed on to direct Brilliant, which tells the story of “a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist.” Variety reports that the script is by newbie screenwriters Elizabeth Shorten and Gillian Gorfil (produer on Blood Diamond), so it’s got that going for it; new female voices are always welcome in the trade. But based on past performance, the chances are slim to none that Luketic directs Brilliant brilliantly. Here’s hoping Luketic finds grace with Brilliant, because there’s nothing sweeter than a solid heist flick.

Gorfil will produce alongside Sidney Kimmel (Adventureland), Gary Lucchesi and Tom Rosenberg (Gamer). Casting is underway, but no start date has been set for the Lakeshore Entertainment film.
