First Good Look at Brad Pitt in Andrew Dominik’s COGAN’S TRADE

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 7th, 2011

cogans-trade-movie-image-brad-pitt-slice-01
At the beginning of March, some blurry set photos from Andrew Dominik’s adaptation of Cogan’s Trade leaked online.  Today, an official-looking image from the film has been released and it shows star Brad Pitt in all his slicked-hair, shotgun-wielding majesty.  Pitt plays Jackie Cogan, a mob enforcer who is tasked with investigating the heist of a high-stakes card game.  The movie has an impressive cast that includes Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom), Scott McNairy (Monsters), rising star Bella Heathcote (Now), and Sam Shepard.
Judging by the image, the film looks to have the grittier feel of Dominik’s debut film Chopper rather than the lyrical, haunting pace of his previous work, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The Weinstein Company picked up the rights to the film and will likely release the movie in 2012.  Hit the jump to check out the image.

Teaser Trailer for Pedro Almodovar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 8th, 2011

The Skin I Live In, the latest from writer/director Pedro Almodovar, is going to be weeeeeird.  I suppose we knew this from the logline: while plotting his revenge against the man who raped his daughter, a plastic surgeon (Antonio Banderas) imprisons and torments his partner (Elena Anaya) in an operating theater in his basement.  The new teaser trailer drives the point home, packing plenty of disturb into thirty seconds.  The Skin I Live In will premiere later this month at the Cannes Film Festival — where prior Almodovar movies All About My Mother and Volver have won awards — before a theatrical release in November.
Marisa Paredes, Jan Cornet, Roberto Alamo, Blanca Suárez, Eduard Fernández, José Luis Gómez, Bárbara Lennie, Susi Sánchez, Fernando Cayo, and Teresa Manresa also star in the film, based on the novel Tarantula by Thierry Jonquet.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

New Poster, Images, and Full Synopsis for DRIVE Starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 8th, 2011

Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson) has earned the status as an exciting filmmaker to look out for, and he rounded up a terrific cast for his Hollywood debut in Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Christina Hendricks, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman, Oscar Isaac, and Albert Brooks.  (I am encouraged that the script by Hossein Amini (Killshot) convinced Brooks to shoot his live-action feature since 2003.)  The logline is promising, too — a novel yet natural entry point into the action genre: a Hollywood stunt driver (Gosling) moonlights as a getaway driver.
Drive will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival later this month in advance of a September 16 release.  The Cannes promotional material gave us our first look at the film with a two-minute clip.  The new Drive press kit assembled for the festival provides a new poster, a longer synopsis, and a bunch of new images.  Look for the poster, synopsis, and images after the break.
Here’s the full synopsis:drive-image-ryan-gosling-03
Driver (RYAN GOSLING) is a stunt driver by day and a getaway driver by night. Doesn’t matter what job he does, Driver is most comfortable behind the wheel of a car. Shannon (BRYAN CRANSTON) is part mentor, part manager for Driver. Since he knows what a great talent Driver is behind the wheel, he either peddles him to film and television directors in the entertainment business or thieves who need an accomplished getaway driver, taking a cut for his own pockets. Always looking to make a buck, Shannon’s current plan is funding a stock car that Driver can race on the professional circuit. Since Bernie Rose (ALBERT BROOKS) is the wealthiest guy he knows, even if the sources of his money are questionable, Shannon proposes he be their investor. After seeing Driver in action at the speedway, Bernie Rose insists Nino (RON PERLMAN) partners with them as well. Primarily a loner and ambivalent about the deals Shannon makes for him, Driver’s world changes the day he shares an elevator ride at his apartment building with Irene (CAREY MULLIGAN). When he sees her again at the grocery store with her young son, Benicio (KADEN LEOS), he is transfixed, and willingly offers help when they are stranded in the parking lot because Irene’s car won’t start. Soon Driver settles into a routine of driving Irene to her waitress job and watching Benicio, entangled in their lives while her car is fixed. This interlude in Driver’s life abruptly stops when Standard (OSCAR ISAAC), Irene’s husband, is let out early from prison for good behavior. Even though nothing has happened between Driver and Irene, Standard is threatened by another man’s presence in his family’s life. Driver backs off, respectful of Irene’s desire to keep her family together, but when he finds Standard bloodied and lying in the garage with a scared Benicio standing next to his father, Driver is embroiled even further in Irene’s life. Then trouble begins…

First Look at Rhys Ifans (Minus a Bag on His Head) from THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: May 8th, 2011

amazing-spider-man-set-photo-rhys-ifans-andrew-garfield-slice-01
Last week, we got our first look at Rhys Ifans in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man.  Kind of.  Ifans plays Dr. Curt Conners, a scientist who accidentally becomes The Lizard when he tries to regrow his lost arm.  Moral of the story: if you’ve lost an arm, take comfort in the fact that you’re not a man-reptile.  Anyway, while I imagine that the character will be mostly (if not entirely) CGI, the set photo from last week showed Ifans with a bag over his head presumably to hide some level of transformation.  Today, we now see Ifans in human-form and without the bag, but with a long green glove on one arm.  That’s so the animators can CGI out the actor’s arm, although if he were method, he would just chop it off.  Computer graphics ruin everything.
Hit the jump to check out the image.  The Amazing Spider-Man also stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.  The film opens in 3D on July 3, 2012.

RESIDENT EVIL 5 Set to Be Released in 3D on September 14, 2012

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 3rd, 2011

As audiences continue to disagree with my wishes and see Resident Evil movies, it only makes sense that Screen Gems will continue to make new ones.  The fourth installment in the series, Resident Evil: Afterlife grossed almost $300 million worldwide and last September, star Milla Jovovich said they were seeking fan input, which is always a good idea because producers need to know that @RE5NotRacist thinks the series needs “mur bewbs”.
Whether or not the film will in fact have “mur bewbs”, Exhibitor Relations’ Facebook page reports that Resident Evil 5 (tentative title) will be released in “eye-gouging 3D” on September 14, 2012.  The September box office has been kind to the Resident Evil franchise and clearly Screen Gems sees no reason to mess with a “good” thing.  There are currently no other films set for release that weekend.

Catherine Zeta-Jones Joins Rebecca Hall and Bruce Willis in LAY THE FAVORITE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 3rd, 2011

Catherine Zeta-Jones has been largely absent from cinemas for the past several years, choosing instead to focus on her family. Her last film to be released domestically was 2008’s Death Defying Acts and she hasn’t attached herself to any projects for years.  But it looks like she might be getting back in the game as Deadline is reporting that Zeta-Jones is in talks to join Rebecca Hall and Bruce Willis in Stephen Frears’ adaptation of Beth Raymer’s memoir Lay the Favorite.
Hall would play a young woman who learns the ins and outs of sports gambling from her “lovable, irascible, and big-bellied” mentor/boss Dink Heimowitz (Willis).  Zeta-Jones would play Heimowitz’ wife.  Filming was originally going to take place in New York and Las Vegas in April, but has now moved to New Orleans for Louisiana’s preferable financial incentives.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of Raymer’s memoir.

Rhys Ifans and Chris Pratt Join FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT

by Jason Barr    Posted: March 3rd, 2011

Rhys Ifans and Chris Pratt have joined director/co-writer Nicholas Stoller’s (Get Him to the Greek) Five Year Engagement. Pratt’s inclusion is confirmed while Ifans is still “in talks,” however, both are expected to partake in a cast that already includes co-writer Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, and Alison Brie. While you may have already gathered as much based upon its title alone, Five Year Engagement follows a young couple’s (Segel and Blunt) extended engagement and the bumps and bruises that they undergo along the way.
Although details regarding Ifans and Pratt’s roles are not divulged in the report, Variety does confirm that the project is scheduled to begin production “towards the end of next month.” Both Ifans and Pratt have been busy as of late, with the former currently shooting the role of Dr. Curt Connors in The Amazing Spider-Man and the latter appearing in this weekend’s Take Me Home Tonight as well as recently wrapping on Moneyball alongside Brad Pitt and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Julianne Hough Joins ROCK OF AGES

by Jason Barr    Posted: March 3rd, 2011

Julianne Hough is reportedly in final negotiations to join Tom Cruise in the film adaptation of Rock of Ages. Per Variety, Hough has earned the role of Sherrie Christian in director Adam Shankman’s (Hairspray) adaptation of the Chris D’Arienzo musical. D’Arienzo penned the script which focuses on a couple that falls in love against the musical backdrop of Bon Jovi, Journey, Styx, etc. and attempts to “stay together while living the rock life.” Shankman and Justin Theroux (Iron Man 2) are currently performing rewrites on the script.
While Variety stops just short of confirming Hough’s involvement, TheWrap claims that Shankman had no such reservation with them in claiming that Hough would play the female lead in the film. As of now, the only other cast member (outside of Cruise) confirmed for Rock of Ages is recording artist Mary J. Blige in the role of Justice Charlier. The project is schedule to begin shooting on May 19th in Florida. Hough and Shankman have a working relationship that predates Rock of Ages as the director helmed Hough’s music video for her 2010 song “Is That So Wrong?”

THE IDES OF MARCH Opens Earlier Than Expected on October 14

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: March 3rd, 2011

When Sony Pictures acquired the George Clooney-directed political thriller The Ides of March, it was suggested the studio planned for a platform release: limited opening in December, then expand in January 2012.  THR reports that Sony has instead scheduled the likely awards contender to open on October 14. I am very much looking forward to The Ides of March, so even though that particular October weekend is packed with wide releases — The Big Year, The Three Musketeers, The Thing, Footloose my choice is made.
Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, and Evan Rachel Wood star in The Ides of March.  Clooney and producing partner Grant Heslov (Good Night, and Good Luck) adapted the script from the Beau Willimon play Farragut North about “a young press secretary who falls prey to dirty backroom politics as he works to get his candidate elected in a tight race.”

New Images and Clip from Sky Movies HD’s NEVERLAND

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 6th, 2011

Sky Movies Premiere HD just sent over a clip and as well as a few images from their new film Neverland.  Featuring a solid cast that includes Rhys Ifans (upcoming Spider-Man reboot), Golden Globe-nominee Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies), Oscar-nominee Bob Hoskins (1986’s Mona Lisa), and Charlie Rowe (Never Let Me Go), Neverland is described as a “bold new take” on J.M. Barrie’s famous Peter Pan tale.  Nick Willing (Syfy’s Alice mini-series) pulls double duty, writing and directing the film.
Hit the jump to check out a behind-the-scenes clip as well as a couple of images from the film.  Look for Neverland to be released in two 90-minute parts later this year.  The film will air exclusively on Sky Movies Premiere HD.
Here’s the clip [via Sky Movies HD]:
Here’s the images which you can click to enlarge (photos by Patrick Redmond):

Finally, here’s the full press release:
SKY MOVIES HD RELEASE FIRST LOOK IMAGES AND FOOTAGE FROM NEVERLAND
The film – to be released in two 90-minute parts in 2011 appearing exclusively on Sky Movies Premiere HD – is a bold new take on the original mythology of JM Barrie’s famous story.
Featuring The Lost Boys, Captain Hook, The Indians, Croc and Neverland itself, the movie – written and directed by Nick Willing – marks the beginning of the classic yarn and marks the return of Bob Hoskins in the role of Mr Smee from Steven Spielberg’s Hook.
Raised on the streets of turn-of-the-century London, orphaned Peter (Charlie Rowe) and his pals survive by their fearless wits as cunning young pickpockets.
Now, they’ve been rounded up by their mentor Jimmy Hook (Rhys Ifans) to snatch a priceless treasure whose magical powers transports them to another world.
It’s here that the boys find themselves confronted by a band of 18th century pirates led by the power-mad Elizabeth Bonny (Anna Friel), and the Native American Kaw tribe led by a Holy Man (Danny Trujillo), which has protected the secret of the tree spirits from Bonny and her gang for ages.
As the fight to save this strange and beautiful world becomes vital, Hook, Peter, and the ragamuffin lost boys consider that growing old somewhere in time could be less important than growing up.
“The legend of Peter Pan spans generations, and never fails to delight and entertain,” said Ian Lewis, Director of Sky Movies.
“Despite many different interpretations, there’s never been a movie of how it all could have come to be – this is that story. Neverland is a fantastic coup for us and a landmark event for Sky Movies.”
Alan Moloney from Parallel Films said: “The story of Peter Pan is one that resonates for every generation.
Nick has brilliantly crafted something that makes sense of the story we all know and love. He takes us back in time and gives us the origins of Peter and Hook’s story in a way that will open this world up to everyone, no matter what their age.”
JM Barrie originally gave the rights to Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1929 and Neverland will subsequently be supporting the great work of the famous children’s hospital.
Christine De Poortere, Peter Pan Director at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity commented, “We’re delighted that Neverland will be benefiting Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity in the spirit of JM Barrie’s legacy.”

James Cameron Gives Update on Guillermo Del Toro’s AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 6th, 2011

When Guillermo Del Toro left The Hobbit, speculation was rampant regarding what the visionary director would choose as his next project. In July, he put the speculation to rest as he announced that he would next take on H.P. Lovecraft’s epic novella At The Mountains of Madness in 3D, with the help of James Cameron as a producer. In September we broke the news that Universal was looking to cast James McAvoy in the starring role, while Del Toro had his sights set on Tom Cruise instead. It appears that pre-production is rolling right along, as Cameron recently gave an update on the project:
We’re very, very actively pre-producing the film right now with Universal. The design work is phenomenal, both the three-dimensional and two-dimensional design work, the physical maquettes, the CG test scenes; the artwork is phenomenal. The fans certainly won’t want for a visual feast with this film. But there’s [still] a bunch of number-crunching and “How you gonna do it?” and “How you gonna make it?”; “Where you gonna do it?” All that stuff.
Hit the jump for more from Cameron, including why he got involved in the project in the first place.
In talking with FearNet (via SlashFilm), Cameron spoke about what first drew him to the project:
One word, one man – Guillermo. We’ve been friends for twenty years. We’ve been trying to work together, really, for that entire time. And it has never quite congealed. We’re both Lovecraft fans. Me from my college days, when I discovered Lovecraft. I think I read everything he wrote in about a month. I powered through it. And if anybody can bring Lovecraft to the screen it’s gonna be Del Toro.
He’s got a real vision for the film. It’s very, very well-developed in his mind. You know, I’m just there to facilitate his vision. I don’t have any strong sense of authorship; zero sense of authorship. I’m just there to try to get it made and help him do the movie that’s in his head.
When Del Toro spoke with Steve about the project at last year’s Saturn Awards, he explained how difficult it would be to get a studio to say yes to “an R-rated tentpole with a tough ending [and] no love story.” This is where Cameron comes in. With his muscle as a producer, it sounds like he’s acting as a safeguard for Del Toro’s vision, ensuring that his film doesn’t get watered down or converted into a more “family-friendly” flick.
Personally, I’m ecstatic to see what Del Toro and Cameron have in store here. While this update provides little in the way of details on the project, Cameron’s enthusiasm is infectious (say what you will about the man’s storytelling/screenwriting ability, but he’s got one of the best eyes for visuals in the business). I’m also quite fond of Cruise as the lead. I found Knight and Day to be a fantastically fun return to form for the actor, and could see this film as his comeback in more dramatic fare.
There’s no official start-date for production yet, but if Del Toro and Cameron can get the budgetary details hammered out, it seems feasible that they could begin rolling sometime later this year.
Here’s a brief synopsis of Lovecraft’s novella:
The story is written in first-person perspective by the geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. On a previous expedition there, a party of scholars from Miskatonic University, led by Dyer, discovered fantastic and horrific ruins and a dangerous secret beyond a range of mountains taller than the Himalayas. New Trailer for PAUL Starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost

by Jason Barr    Posted: January 6th, 2011

A new trailer for Greg Mottola’s (Superbad) Paul is now available online.  In case you’re new to the program, Paul stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (who also penned the script) as a couple of geeks who are road-tripping across the U.S. when they close encounter (3rd kind) a runaway alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen).  The unlikely heroes then begin an adventure to get Paul to his mother ship.
I have been looking forward Paul for quite some time and, in my opinion, this new trailer (which really showcases some sweet soundtrack material) is the best one released to date.  In addition to Pegg and Frost, Paul’s outstanding cast also includes Kristen Wiig, Jason Bateman, Bill Hader, Joe Lo Truglio, Jane Lynch, Jeffrey Tambor, and Sigourney Weaver.  Paul opens March 18, 2011.  Hit the jump for the trailer:
Here’s the trailer [click over to Apple to watch the trailer in HD].  You can also check out all our Paul coverage here.  It includes a set visit, posters, other trailers, on set interviews, and a lot more.
Here’s the official synopsis for Paul:
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for the comedy adventure Paul  as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland.  While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever.
For the past 60 years, an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) has been hanging out at a top-secret military base.  For reasons unknown, the space-traveling smart ass decides to escape the compound and hop on the first vehicle out of town—a rented RV containing Earthlings Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Collings (Frost).
Chased by federal agents and the fanatical father of a young woman that they accidentally kidnap, Graeme and Clive hatch a fumbling escape plan to return Paul to his mother ship.  And as two nerds struggle to help, one little green man might just take his fellow outcasts from misfits to intergalactic heroes.
