Darren Aronofsky Shopping His Noah's Ark Tale

published: 2011-06-07 23:20:45 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Ever since Darren Aronofsky decided to pass on The Wolverine filmophiles everywhere have been curious as to what the filmmaker's next move will be. With multiple projects in the hopper, the director has many options, including The Tiger, Human Nature and Machine Man. Now it looks like he's decided on something a bit more...biblical.

Deadline reports that Aronofsky has begun shopping around Noah, the director's take on the Noah's Ark tale. The script was originally written by Aronofsky, but is currently being written by John Logan. The report says that Paramount, Fox, CBS Films [UPDATE: A representative from CBS has informed us that they will not be buying Aronofsky's new film] and Summit have all shown an interest in the project, and New Regency is open to co-financing. The director is asking for a $130 million budget and is apparently being seen as "a big fantasy epic." Before last year none of Aronofsky's films made more than $50 million at the worldwide box office, however Black Swan crossed the $300 million mark internationally last month.

Basically, Aronofsky sees an opportunity to get a passion project made and he's not going to let the opportunity slip through his fingers. I am, however, wondering how he will treat some of the gaping holes in the original story, specifically how a flood was meant to kill all of the fish and birds in the world in addition to every other living creature.

Set Photos From Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom

published: 2011-06-07 13:11:16 Author: Eric Eisenberg
I find it hard to imagine that any real film fan isn't over-the-moon excited for Wes Anderson's next project. The story of a young, in-love couple that runs away and causes everyone in their hometown to panic, the movie's helmer alone is more than enough to raise interest, but the cast also happens to be the filmmaker's most notable cast since The Royal Tenenbaums, including Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Harvey Keitel and Jason Schwartzman. Still don't think you're at the proper excitement level? Maybe this will help.

An IMDb Message Board user (via The Film Stage) has posted the first photos from the set and in addition to showcasing some of the set, the photographer was also able to capture a moment with Norton (who is apparently playing a Scout Leader) and Murray (who doesn't appear to be in costume). You can check out three of the photos below but be sure to head over to IMDb to see the rest!

A new batch of set photos have arrived from Wes Anderson's new drama Moonrise Kingdom, which is currently shooting in Rhode Island. Click on the photos below, which feature Bill Murray and Edward Norton, to access our gallery. Read on past the photos for more news regarding this project.
Actor Harvey Keitel has been confirmed as a cast member of Moonrise Kingdom, although his role is not known. There is also an unconfirmed report that Focus Features is eyeing a summer 2012 release date for the project. It would be Wes Anderson's first movie to receive a summer release, if the rumor is proven true.

Wes Anderson is directing Moonrise Kingdom from a script he co-wrote with Roman Coppola. The story, set in the 1960s, centers on two young teens who fall in love and run away from their sleepy New England town. Several factions of the town then unite to find the young runaways.

Kodi Smit-McPhee in Talks to Play Benvolio in ROMEO AND JULIET Opposite Hailee Steinfeld; Corbin Bernsen Joins LAY THE FAVORITE

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: June 7th, 2011

And the casting stories keep on coming. 14-year-old Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) is in early negotiations to join Carlo Carlei’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Variety reports that he’s being eyed for the role of Benvolio, Romeo’s cousin. Hailee Steinfeld is attached to star as Juliet, with Ed Westwick poised to play Tybalt and Holly Hunter set to take on the role of The Nurse. Italian director Carlei (Flight of the Innocent) will helm from a script by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park). The key roles of Romeo and Mercutio have yet to be cast, but production is set to begin this summer in Italy.
Additionally, Corbin Bernsen has joined the cast of the indie gambling comedy Lay the Favorite . Based on the memoir of Beth Raymer, the flick stars Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis, Vince Vaughn and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The story centers on Raymer’s rise from a Las Vegas cocktail waitress to one of the world’s best gamblers. Variety reports that Bernsen will play Hall’s father in the flick. Stephen Frears (High Fidelity) is directing from a sript by D.V. De Vincentis. I’m a big fan of Frears, and the cast he’s turning out is pretty impressive. Michael Pena Joins Sean Penn and Josh Brolin in GANGSTER SQUAD

by Jason Barr   Posted: June 7th, 2011

With their comedy 30 Minutes or Less set to hit theaters on August 12th, Michael Pena and director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) will now join forces once again in the crime/drama Gangster Squad. According to Heat Vision, Pena has been cast alongside Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, and Ryan Gosling, as an eager-to-please LAPD officer. For those unfamiliar with the project, Gangster Squad is based on an LA Times article by Paul Lieberman that focuses on corruption within LAPD ranks in the 1940s. The film will pit good cop John O’Mara (Brolin) against gangster Mickey Cohen (Penn) as the former attempts to keep East Coast mafia influences out of Los Angeles. Gangster Squad currently looks to be a 2013 release. In the meantime, Pena can also be seen alongside Eddie Murphy, Ben Stiller, and Casey Affleck in the action/comedy Tower Heist due out later this year on November 4th. http://collider.com/michael-pena-gangster-squad/95207/

First Look at Sacha Baron Cohen in THE DICTATOR

by Matt Goldberg   Posted: June 7th, 2011

The first set photo has leaked from Sacha Baron Cohen’s next film The Dictator.  It’s Cohen’s first film where he’s not playing a character from Da Ali G Show, but it looks like it has the best premise since Borat:
The film tells the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. It is inspired by the best selling novel, Zabibah and The King, by Saddam Hussein
Whether Cohen will be engaging in his candid camera antics or if this is a straight feature remains to be seen, but Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno) will once again be behind the camera.  The film is also set to star Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, and Jason Mantzoukas (The League).  Hit the jump to check out the photo of an All-American foreign dictator.  The Dictator is slated to open on May 11, 2012.

New Set Photos for Wes Anderson’s MOONRISE KINGDOM; Harvey Keitel Confirmed to Join Cast

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 7th, 2011

moonrise-kingdom-set-photo-slice-01
Wes Anderson may have gotten has filmography back on track with the charming Fantastic Mr. Fox but he’ll be headed back to live-action for his next feature, Moonrise Kingdom.  The film already has an impressive cast that includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, and now, according to The Film Stage, Harvey Keitel.  The story “follows a young boy and girl (Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward) falling in love. When they are moved to run away together, various factions of the town mobilize to search for them and the town is turned upside down – which might not be such a bad thing.”
Some set photos from the film have leaked online and one of them shows Norton as a scout leader and another has Murray out of costume but being awesome (which is innate to Bill Murray).  Due to the cast and the story, Focus Features may give Moonrise Kingdom a summer 2012 rather than Anderson’s typical awards season bow.

Will Ferrell on "Anchorman" and "Step Brothers" Sequels

Posted: May 3rd, 2011 by WorstPreviews.com Staff

Collider and CinemaBlend had the chance to speak to Will Ferrell about whether there are any plans to develop sequels to his "Anchorman" and "Step Brothers" comedies, which where both directed by Adam McKay.

"We just had a great meeting with John C. Reilly about maybe another 'Step Brothers,'" said the actor. "Because 'Anchorman' is a brick wall right now."

Ferrell went on to say that Paramount Pictures is simply not interested in "Anchorman 2." But believes there is a way to change the studio's mind. "You really have to assert some sort of email hate campaign to Paramount Pictures," he explained. "They've told us, 'We've run the numbers and it's not a good fit.' So that one is a no-go, sadly."

**Emma Roberts To Star In Coming Of Age Tale Adult World **Megan Fox's Passion Play To Be Released May 6 **Jason Schwartzman To Work With Wes Anderson Again In Moonrise Kingdom **Easy A Director Hired To Direct Sex On The Moon **Kirk Jones Will Tell You What To Expect When You're Expecting

Emma Roberts To Star In Coming Of Age Tale Adult World

published: 2011-03-24 01:07:12 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Now 20 years old, Emma Roberts is at a point in her career where she has to separate herself from the movies she did when she was younger - like Nancy Drew, Aquamarine and Hotel For Dogs - and start taking on more mature roles. She's already done a solid job of doing so, starring in the indie comedy It's Kind of A Funny Story and the upcoming Scream 4, but now she ready to enter the adult world by literally entering Adult World.

The Playlist reports that Roberts has signed on to star in the coming-of-age film, which will be directed by Scott Coffey. The actress will play a recent college grad who wants to become a poet, but is "stuck working in a mom-and-pop bookstore." The site also reports that the production is looking for a male lead and an "older character," though nobody has yet been cast.

Roberts has actually been building up some pretty strong indie cred recently, having also starred in What's Wrong With Virginia and Homework in addition to the aforementioned Funny Story, while also keeping her face in the mainstream as well. If she keeps this up, a transition into a legitimate adult acting career could easily be had.

Megan Fox's Passion Play To Be Released May 6, Gets New Poster
published: 2011-03-24 00:42:36 Author: Eric Eisenberg
While covering the Toronto Film Festival last year, own our Katey Rich had the opportunity to see a film titled Passion Play, starring Mickey Rourke, Megan Fox and Bill Murray. To put it mildly, the whole thing sounds like a masterpiece of awful. The movie was so incredibly bad, in fact, that Katey actually decided not to write a standard review, and instead wrote up a list of 15 things you need to know about it, including the fact that a group of ninjas pop up at the beginning and are never explained and that Rourke and Fox "have fairly graphic sex." Needless to say, we watched in amazement as the film was actually picked up for distribution, and now Entertainment Weekly has learned that it will actually make its way to theaters.

According to the site, previous reports that the movie would go straight to DVD are incorrect, and that the film will be given a limited release in New York and Los Angeles - but it won't be around long. Set to hit theaters on May 6, the DVD release date (no word of a Blu-ray in the article) is May 31, which may very well set the record for fastest movie to go from first theatrical release to home video. To go with the news, EW also received the first one-sheet for the film which, surprise, surprise, isn't anything spectacular.

Check out the poster below and see it full size over at EW.

Jason Schwartzman To Work With Wes Anderson Again In Moonrise Kingdom
published: 2011-03-23 21:57:43 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Ever since making his first feature film, Bottle Rocket, back in 1996, Wes Anderson has made a habit of casting the same group of actors in all of his movies. Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston, and Jason Schwartzman have all appeared in no less than three of Anderson's six movies, and now the last name on that list is joining the cast of his newest.

The Examiner Providence is reporting via The Rhode Island Film & Television Office that Schwartzman has officially signed on to play a part in Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom. As reported back in November, the film already stars Murray (who has been in every one of the director's films since Rushmore), Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton. Set in the 1960s, the plot centers on a young couple who decide to run away together, but everyone in town is convinced that they require rescuing. The movie will shoot this spring in Rhode Island.

The pairing of Schwartzman and Anderson has yet to let me down, and I don't expect it will this time either. Now all we have to do is wait to see if the Wilsons and/or Huston want to join the party as well.

Easy A Director Hired To Direct Sex On The Moon
published: 2011-03-23 21:27:46 Author: Eric Eisenberg
Last year there was no film that surprised me more than the Will Gluck-directed Easy A. Though from the outside it looked like your typical dumb high school comedy, it actually had a lot of heart and was bolstered by a fantastic turn by Emma Stone. As a result, I've found myself interested in watching Gluck's career trajectory, and now I'm happy to report that he's landed one of the more odd-ball films I've reported on this year.

The LA Times is reporting that the director has been hired to helm Sex on the Moon, based on the book by Ben Mezrich. As reported back in January, the book was picked up after the massively successful adaptation of Mezrich's The Accidental Billionaires, also known as The Social Network. Based on a true story, the book tells the tale of a NASA employee who decides that the best way to impress a girl is by stealing moon rocks from the Johnson Space Center. Scott Rudin, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, the producers behind The Social Network, are also lined up behind this project.

Gluck's next film, Friends With Benefits, will be released on July 22, and it will be interesting to see if Easy A was just a fluke or the sign of something real. Can't be any worse than No Strings Attached, right?

Kirk Jones Will Tell You What To Expect When You're Expecting
published: 2011-03-23 13:45:32 Author: Katey Rich
It's one thing to base a movie on a novel that everybody loves-- people who read The Da Vinci Code knew exactly what to expect from the movie version, and as much as the Harry Potter movies may need to condense the lengthy books, they're still basically the same idea. But when it comes to adapting reference books, they're literally operating off nothing but name recognition. He's Just Not That Into You was a sprawling rom-com spinoff very loosely from the original advice book, and now the mini-trend is repeating itself for What To Expect When You're Expecting, the upcoming romantic comedy from Lionsgate.

Now Kirk Jones, the director behind Waking Ned Devine, Nanny McPhee and more recently the Robert De Niro family dramedy Everybody's Fine, will be tackled with turning the pregnancy reference book into a movie worth watching. Deadline reports he's been brought on direct the script adapted by Heather Hach and Whip It writer Shauna Cross; the story follows five different couples as they figure out, well, what to expect when expecting a baby. Cross's participation had been pretty much the only thing keeping me from dreading this project, but Jones doesn't seem like such a bad choice either. I'm not expecting the salvation of the romantic comedy genre here, but it if winds up being less irritating than He's Just Not That Into You, we're at least headed the right direction.
