Josh Hutcherson to Star in Benecio Del Toro-Directed Short MONDAY

Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are All Right) will star in Benecio Del Toro’s directorial debut, the short, fictionalized documentary Monday. The film will make up a segment of the omnibus feature 7 Days in Havana and, according to Deadline, will tell the story of a tourist (Hutcherson) who is taking in the city’s culture for the first time. Per the report, other segments within the omnibus (which I’m assuming will be similarly titled by days of the week) will feature recurring characters in the name of making 7 Days in Havana a cohesive whole.

Other directors contributing segments to 7 Days in Havana include Laurent Cantet, Julio Medem, Gaspar Noe, Elia Suleiman, Juan Carlos Tabio, and Pablo Trapero. Casting across the other segments includes work from Cuban actors such as Ana de Armas, Vladimir Cruz, Mirta Ibarra, Jorge Perugorria. As for Hutcherson, he recently finished up production on the follow up to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. That film is due out later this year on September 23.

Keira Knightley to Voice Tinker Bell in NEVERLAND
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 10th, 2011
Keira Knightley will provide the voice of Tinker Bell in Sky Movies HD and Syfy’s Live-Action Peter Pan prequel, Neverland. Knightley joins Rhys Ifans, Anna Friel, Bob Hoskins, Charles Dance, and Charlie Rowe in the two-part movie, which is scheduled to air this summer. The prequel re-imagines Peter Pan and his Lost Boys as a group of pickpockets who are transported to Neverland by a magical orb. It’s the second Peter Pan prequel we’ve heard of in recent weeks, joining Pan, which will star Channing Tatum and was picked up by Sony Pictures.

Hit the jump for the full press release. Knightley will be seen later this year in the dramas Last Night and A Dangerous Method. She’s also circling roles in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis and Joe Wright’s adaptation of Anna Karenina.

Matthew McConaughey to Star in THE DALLAS BUYER’S CLUB
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 10th, 2011
Matthew McConaughey has signed on to star in the drama The Dallas Buyer’s Club. 24 Frames reports that Jean Marc Vallee (The Young Victoria) will direct the film, which is based on the true story of Ron Woodroof, a heterosexual man who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986. Given only a few months to live, Woodroof began to smuggle alternative and illegal treatments into the US and into the hands of other AIDS patients. He ended up living six more years and prolonging the lives of countless others. Presumably, McConaughey will have to lose his signature physique as he wastes away, but isn’t it worth it just so we can all potentially hear the words: “Best Actor Nominee Matthew McConaughey”?

Hit the jump for more on the project and my thoughts on McConaughey landing the lead role.

Trent Reznor NOT Scoring or Acting in ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER
by Adam Chitwood Posted: March 10th, 2011
After his fantastic (and Oscar-winning) stab at feature film composing with The Social Network, it’s understandable that Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has been fielding a few offers to score more feature films. He’s currently working on David Fincher’s next film, the American adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and was recently rumored to be scoring and possibly acting in Timur Bekmambetov’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Well, now it turns out that Reznor won’t be scoring the Civil War-set vampire flick after all. He explains on the official NIN message boards (via Cinema Blend) that when news broke that he’d be working on the score for the film, he still hadn’t made up his mind as to whether or not he’d be taking the job. No word on why he turned it down, but he states that there’s “no juicy story here,” so presumably he just decided he’d rather focus his talents elsewhere for the time-being. Hit the jump to read what he had to say.

Josh Zetumer to Pen ROBOCOP Remake
by Jason Barr Posted: March 10th, 2011

A little over a week ago we let you know that Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) was in talks to helm MGM’s remake of Paul Verhoeven’s RoboCop. Tonight, we can bring you confirmation not only that Padilha is on board, but also that the studio has hired Josh Zetumer to script the remake. Per Deadline, the studio expects Zetumer and Padilha to work together closely in developing the film which will undoubtedly be under close scrutiny from the word “go” by people such as myself who believe the 1987 original to be a sci-fi classic.

While Zetumer currently lacks a completed name project on his resume, the scribe’s spy-thriller Infiltrator is a “Black List” alum and is currently set up at Warner Bros. with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star. Moreover, he also penned a draft of the currently defunct fourth installment in The Bourne Identity franchise. Perhaps most importantly, Zetumer has experience writing remakes as he scripted a draft of Dune back when Peter Berg was attached to direct the remake of David Lynch’s 1984 film at Paramount.

New Water For Elephants Trailer Proves Reese Witherspoon Belongs In A Circus

This is going to sound like an attack on Reese Witherspoon, but it’s not. Hear me out. While Hollywood often tries to cast her as the romantic lead in whatever generic, meet cute they’re cooking up, Reese Witherspoon will never belong in those films. It’s her look. It just isn’t Hollywood. She’s pretty, but not in the way most actresses are pretty. She’s pretty in the way the hottest girl in the Ozarks might be pretty. Her look isn’t glamour or glitz, maybe that’s why she’s done her best work playing the plainest of the plain, like Walk the Line’s June Carter Cash. What I’m getting at is that Reese Witherspoon belongs in a circus.

In Water for Elephants she’ll play the hottest girl in a traveling circus sideshow, and in this new trailer for the film, I buy it. I wouldn’t buy it if this part were played by Rachel McAdams, or Scarlett Johansson, or just about anyone else except Salma Hayek who can do wonders while wearing facial hair. I buy it when it’s Reese Witherspoon.

I also buy Christoph Waltz as the man behind the circus tent. He’s playing another villain, clearly he’s typecast, but at least he’s really good at playing villains. Did you see Green Hornet? Waltz was better than average there.

Ryan Reynolds Says Deadpool Is Still In The Works

published: 2011-03-03 15:43:05 Author: Eric Eisenberg

This past summer you couldn't go a whole week without hearing something distressing about Deadpool, the 20th Century Fox movie based on the Marvel character that would serve as a spin-off of sorts from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Though Ryan Reynolds repeatedly mentioned how much love he has for the character, he kept adding more and more projects to his schedule, pushing Deadpool further away. Things were made even worse when the script by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese leaked online and it was said that the project "could turn Ryan Reynolds into an icon." Lucky for us, the dream isn't dead yet.

Empire recently had the chance to speak with the star about the future of the project, to which he said that it is "still in the works." Unfortunately, however, the problem that continues to rear its ugly head is scheduling, as Reynolds still isn't sure where he will find time to make the movie. Asked to compare the Merc With The Mouth with The Green Lantern, whom Reynolds will be seen playing this summer, the actor replied,

“Those two universes are completely different. Superhero movies are so pervasive in pop culture, I don’t look at the as superhero roles as much as just roles. They’re such different people. Deadpool is about a guy in a highly militarized shame spiral, Green Lantern is more universally themed"

If you were to go through the archives of Deadpool stories on this site and pick out the ones written by me you will discover that I desperately want to see this film made even if it takes another five years (though I really hope it doesn't take that long). Between The Change Up, Safe House, and R.I.P.D., all of which have directors and casts, it's unlikey that there will be any time for Deadpool to be made this year, but hopefully Reynolds will be willing to sacrifice some of his 2012 to get it made.

Weinstein Company Teams Up With Miley Cyrus To Distribute So Undercover
published: 2011-03-03 10:05:33 Author: Katey Rich
The Weinstein Company just walked away in triumph from the Oscars, with a Best Picture statue and three others for The King's Speech. So what are they going to do next? Team up with Miley Cyrus, of course! In a press release the studio announced they'll be distributing So Undercover, the action comedy starring Cyrus in a kind of 21 Jump Street situation, going undercover at a college sorority to protect the daughter of a former mobster.

Cyrus, known pretty much exclusively as Hannah Montana from her TV show and massive concert tour, made her first non-Hannah film last year with The Last Song, an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel that performed about as well as those things usually do. So Undercover actually sounds even more like the Hannah Montana series-- the dual identities, the flock of sorority girls who will likely surround her, even the notion of it being a caper. Cyrus is clearly trying to be considered as a serious actress beyond just her tween audience, but there seems to be plenty here for them too.

Tom Vaughn, who last made What Happens In Vegas, directed the film, which also stars Jeremy Piven, Mike O'Malley and Kelly Osbourne. Here's a few quotes from the press release in case you need to read about various Hollywood figures complimenting each other. So Undercover is set for release in October this year.
“We’re excited to be working with Miley Cyrus as she transitions from child phenomenon to grown-up star. She’s got charisma and talent to burn, and SO UNDERCOVER shows her to be a deft comedic actress,” said Glasser. “This deal is a testament to the savvy instincts of Peter Lawson and his acquisitions team in scouting and securing those projects that will enhance TWC’s release slate.”

“We are thrilled to know that the film is now in great hands with Harvey Weinstein and his amazingly talented team at The Weinstein Company,” said Sinclair and East. Exclusive Films International (EFI), the International sales and marketing arm of Exclusive, is handling worldwide sales of this title and has sold most major foreign territories prior to and while at the European Film Market in Berlin last week.

Danger Is Imminent In Four New Scream 4 Stills
published: 2011-03-03 09:52:33 Author: Katey Rich

Crammed with random celebrity cameos, a whole slew of up-and-coming actors and the promise of seemingly endless snark and gore, Scream 4 is looking like a major bright spot in the spring movie season as we get closer to its April 15 release date. Yes, the first two sequels proved the law of diminishing returns, and yes, it's going to be weird seeing Courteney Cox and David Arquette together when we know their marriage broke up not long after the movie finished shooting. But there will be plenty else to keep an eye on, including appearances from Kristen Bell and Anna Paquin (who seem to be doomed pretty early), Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere (ditto), and even the lovely Alison Brie, a.k.a. the girl from Community everyone you know has a crush on.

And speaking of Ms. Brie, she's at the center of one of the four new Scream 4 images released today by the Weinstein Company; you can see all of them in the gallery below. Ghostface doesn't appear in any of them, except for a projection in what looks like a slideshow presentation from Rory Culkin's smartass teenager character, but all of these people look like they could be in danger at any moment. Check out the new images and join me, won't you, in revising history to forget the first two sequels and look forward to this movie fully.
