As is tradition, The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation handed out its "best of the worst" Razzie Awards on Saturday, the night before the Oscars. You can read the press release followed by the "winners" below:
Voting members of The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation have sifted through the cinematic rubble of last year’s Berry Worst Achievements in Film, and come up with the “winners” for The 31st Annual RAZZIE® Awards. Results are announced in satirical ceremonies held at Hollywood’s Barnsdall Gallery Theatre at 7:30pm PST on Saturday, February 26, 2011 — the now traditional Night Before the Oscars®.

Not quite sweeping the ceremony, but still handily leading the pack among this year’s RAZZIE choices is RAZZIE Repeat Offender M. Night Shyamalan’s “re-imagining” of the faux-anime’ TV series THE LAST AIRBENDER into a jumbled, jump-cut mess of a movie that fans of the TV show hated even more than critics did (if that’s even possible!). In addition to Worst Director and Worst Picture, AIRBENDER also “won” Worst Screenplay, a brand-new RAZZIE category for 2010, Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D, and Worst Supporting Actor Jackson Rathbone (who had the misfortune to appear in both AIRBENDER and 2010’s other most-RAZZIE-nominated title, TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE).

The other big “winner” (if that’s the right term when speaking of these awards) was the bling-obsessed superslick chick flick SEX & THE CITY #2, which took gold-spray-painted statuettes for Worst Sequel, Worst Screen Ensemble (for its entire cast) and Worst Actress (presented jointly to the film’s four principles, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristen Davis).

Rounding out the field of this year’s sorriest cinematic losers were King of the Twittering Twits Ashton Kutcher as Worst Actor for both KILLERS and VALENTINE’S DAY, and Jessica Alba, finally “winning” a RAZZIE with her fifth nomination. Alba was named Worst Supporting Actress for her “performances” in four films, THE KILLER INSIDE ME, LITTLE FOCKERS, MACHETE and VALENTINE’S DAY. The RAZZIES® were created in 1980 as a logical antidote to Tinsel Town’s annual glut of self-congratulatory awards by John Wilson, author of The Official Razzie Movie Guide and Everything I Know I Learned at the Movies. “Winners” were determined by mailing ballots to 637 voters in 46 U.S. states and 17 foreign countries. Electronic voting and certification of this year’s Final RAZZIE® Ballot was handled by Vote-Now.com.

Blake Lively to Star in HICK with Chloe Moretz, Confirms She’s NOT in SEX AND THE CITY Prequel

Since her dark turn in Ben Affleck’s The Town, Hollywood has started to see Blake Lively as more than just a pretty face, and it looks like she’ll take on yet another dark role in Hick. Adapted from the Andrea Portes novel of the same name, Hick tells the story of young Nebraska girl who runs away to Las Vegas from her neglectful parents. Derrick Martini (Lymelife) is set to direct the coming-of-age drama, with Chloe Moretz attached to star as the young girl. Lively broke the news that she’ll portray the thirteen year-old’s meth-addicted mother. Kirsten Dunst recently signed on for the project, but it’s not yet known if Livley is replacing her or if Dunst is simply playing another role in the film.

In the same interview with ITN, Lively confirmed earlier reports that she will not be playing a young Carrie Bradshaw in a Sex and the City prequel, contrary to previous rumors. Hit the jump for the synopsis of Hick.

Juliette Binoche and Mathieu Amalric Join David Cronenberg’s COSMOPOLIS?

The revolving door that is David Cronenberg’s adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel Cosmopolis may once again be in motion. C7enma [via The Playlist] seems to think that both Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) and Mathieu Amalric (Quantum of Solace) have joined a cast that currently features Robert Pattinson and Paul Giamatti. Although details on their prospective roles are non-existant at this time, the report does confirm that Cosmopolis is set to commence its nine-week shoot in Toronto on May 24th of this year.

For those just tuning in, Cosmopolis tells the story of a newlywed billionaire (Pattinson) who loses his entire fortune (not to mention his blushing new bride) over the course of one really bad day. Prior to Pattinson’s involvement, Colin Farrell was set to star alongside the now happily pregnant Marion Cotillard in the film. As it stands, the role of Pattinson’s wife has yet to be filled (given her age, I would be surprised to see Binoche here) although previous rumors have placed Keira Knightley in that spot. Of course, we’ll keep you up to date with the latest Cosmopolis news as it becomes available.

Summit to Release Cancer Comedy 50/50 Starring Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt This September

The long talked about Seth Rogen-starred “cancer comedy”, previously called I’m With Cancer, finally has a title and a release date. Summit plans to release 50/50 on September 30^th of this year. This is fantastic news (via The Wrap) given the caliber of talent of the film’s cast which includes Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Angelica Huston and Phillip Baker Hall. Based on screenwriter Will Reiser’s own experiences getting cancer in his 20’s, the film was originally set to star James McAvoy in the lead role until the actor had to bow out for personal reasons. Gordon-Levitt stepped in to take on the lead after McAvoy left. Jonathan Levin (The Wackness) directed the dramedy.

Anton Yelchin to Star in ODD THOMAS

Anton Yelchin is set to star in the adaptation of Dean Koontz’ Odd Thomas.  Directed by Stephen Sommers (The Mummy), the book centers “Odd Thomas”, a young man who is able to see and partially communicate with the dead.  Thomas can speak to the ghosts but they can’t speak to him.  There have been four Odd Thomas books since 2003 plus a graphic novel prequel.  Bloody Disgusting doesn’t specify if Sommers’ adaptation will pull from all the novels or only from the first book.

First Look at Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher

Back in June, we reported that Meryl Streep had signed on to play influential and controversial British Primer Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.  We now have the first image of Streep as Thatcher and if you want to feel a cold chill run up your spine, I highly recommend checking it out.  The film, directed by Phyllida Law (Mamma Mia!), is set just before Thatcher took her country to war in the Falklands.  The Iron Lady also stars Jim Broadbent as Thatcher’s husband Denis, Anthony Head as her longest-serving cabinet member Geoffrey Howe, Richard E. Grant as conservative politician Michael Heseltine, and Roger Allam has political strategist Gordon Reece.

Dakota Fanning Signs on for GIRLS NIGHT OUT

Dakota Fanning has signed on to Girls Night Out.  The charming premise has Fanning playing the teenaged British Princess Margaret and going out on the town with her sister (and current Queen) Elizabeth on V.E. Day in 1945.  THR reports that Michael Hoffman (The Last Station) will direct after he finishes up work on the remake of Gambit starring Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz.  Trevor De Silva penned the script.

I’ve become a fan of Fanning now that she’s grown out of her precocious-child phase and into a mature actor.  Last October, Fanning was in talks to star in the drama If I Stay.  It’s also assumed that she’ll reprise her role as the evil vampire Jane in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

SEX AND THE CITY Prequel in the Works? Blake Lively to Play Young Carrie Bradshaw?

If you thought that the dismal response to Sex and the City 2 would kill the beast, you may have to think again.  MSN Australia’s blog Grazia [via /Film] reports that “studio bosses” are interested in adapting Candace Bushnell’s The Carrie Diaries, which centers on the teenage years of SATC protagonist Carrie Bradshaw.  Bushnell recently finished a second novel, Summer and the City, which follows 19-year-old Carrie from Connecticut to New York.  An insider says that there are no plans to bring back the original cast and that “the prequel is about breathing new life into the story and exploring Carrie’s first few months in NYC and the beginning of her relationship with an older man.”  Grazia also reports that Sex and the City producer Michael Patrick King has expressed interest in having Gossip Girl star Blake Lively play young Carrie.  Of course, none of this addresses the problems of Sex and the City 2, which made the characters come off like a bunch of shallow, entitled narcissists.
