New Images from TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON and THE THREE MUSKETEERS

Fans of big dopey 3D action movies can prepare to get giddy, because new images have been released for Transformers: Dark Of The Moon and The Three Musketeers, offering up tantalizing stills of their drug of choice. The films of course come from two of Hollywood’s living legends of dumb entertainment: directors Michael Bay (Bad Boys II) and Paul W.S. Anderson (Mortal Kombat). It’s unlikely that either of these movies will require any mental effort from their audiences, but it’s also very likely those audiences will be distracted by lots of flashing lights and pretty colors.
Hit the jump to thrill at the site of big CGI robots smashing things and pretty Hollywood actors fightin’ n’ posin’ in expensive period costumes. Transformers: Dark Of The Moon stars Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel, John Malkovich, Tyrese Gibson, Frances McDormand, Ken Jeong, Alan Tudyk, John Turturro, and a bunch of robots. The film opens in 3D on July 1st. The Three Musketeers stars Matthew Macfadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans, Logan Lerman, Orlando Bloom, and Christoph Waltz and will be released in 3D on October 14th.

Antje Traue to Play Female Villain Faora in MAN OF STEEL [Updated]

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 27th, 2011

Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, Man of Steel, may finally be zeroing in on an actress to play the film’s female villain.  There’s been some debate over whether or not the role is Ursa (played by Sarah Douglas in Superman and Superman II), the accomplice of General Zod (played in Man of Steel by Michael Shannon) comic book villain Faora (who was the inspiration for Ursa), or an entirely new character.  Deadline doesn’t have the answer, but they do say that whoever the female villain is, German actress Antje Traue (Pandorum) is the frontrunner for the part.  If she does get the role, she’ll be joining a cast that includes Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Kevin Costner.
[Update: Variety reports that Antje has the role and that role is Faora.  Variety also speculates that Man of Steel will use "the version of Faora that debuted in Action Comics #779 as a Pokolistanian aide of General Zod. That character was an orphan metahuman with the ability to disrupt molecular bonds, which allowed her to create a mutagenic virus that served as the linchpin of Zod's plan."]
Man of Steel is set to hit theaters December 2012.

New International Trailer for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 27th, 2011

On the heels of a new domestic trailer for Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class, Fox has also released an international version that sets a slightly different tone, and has some new footage including a first look at Oliver Platt and Ray Wise.  Again, there’s not of elaboration on the role the Hellfire Club will play, but the point of both trailers is clear: mutants prevented World War III.  Thanks, mutants!  Hit the jump to watch.

Helen Hunt Joins John Hawkes in THE SURROGATE

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: April 27th, 2011

Academy Award Winner Helen Hunt has joined the cast of the indie drama The Surrogate. Recent Oscar nominee John Hawkes is set to play the role of Mark O’Brien in the film based on a true story. O’Brien was “a paraplegic polio victim who lived most of his life in an iron lung, paralyzed from the neck down.” Hawkes’ character sets out to find a sex surrogate willing to take his virginity, and Variety reports that Hunt will take on the role of his surrogate. Rhea Pearlman also has a role in the film.
Hunt’s character struggles with her own life, coming to terms with explaining her profession to her 12-year-old son. Ben Lewin wrote and will direct the period flick set in the 1980’s. Lewin himself is a polio survivor.

Trailer for BEAUTIFUL BOY Starring Michael Sheen and Maria Bello

A trailer for the indie drama Beautiful Boy has gone online. The story takes the unique perspective of focusing on the parents (played by Michael Sheen and Maria Bello) of a young man who went on a shooting spree on his college campus and then killed himself. Usually, the approach to a senseless tragedy such as that is to blame the parents, and then the tragedy somehow makes sense: better parents means better kid means no shooting spree and we can go back to pretending that the world is not a random series of uncontrollable events. I have hope that Shawn Ku’s film, which played at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, will handle its subject matter with maturity and insight. Having Sheen and Bello as the leads is already a great sign.

New Trailer for BRIDESMAIDS Starring Kristen Wiig

I’m so happy that buzz I’m hearing on Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids out of SXSW is positive otherwise this trailer would have me mildly concerned about the film. Judging the film based solely on the new trailer, the humor mostly seems to revolve around Kristen Wiig being a neurotic single woman who drinks a lot. While I’m confident that Wiig has the charm and comic timing to carry a movie, this trailer doesn’t sell me on a film that my peers are celebrating.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Bridesmaids also stars Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm. The film opens May 13th.

John Hawkes to Star in Indie Drama SURROGATE
by Matt Goldberg Posted: March 15th, 2011
John Hawkes has been tapped to star in Ben Lewin’s indie drama Surrogate. Per Variety, the story “is based on the life of Mark O’Brien, a poet and journalist who, after spending most of his life with an iron lung as a result of polio, decides to explore his sexuality. He hires a sex surrogate and soon develops a relationship that changes both of their lives.” And this is an independent feature?! I can’t believe a studio wouldn’t want to make this.

I’ve been a big fan of Hawkes for a while and with his recent Oscar nomination for Winter’s Bone, I think he’s about to breakout in a big way. He’ll next be seen in supporting roles in Vera Farmiga’s Higher Ground, Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, and the excellent Martha Marcy May Marlene.

Alec Baldwin Leaves MEN IN BLACK III
by Jason Barr Posted: March 15th, 2011
If it weren’t for bad news, there would be no news emitting from Sony Pictures’ beleaguered Men in Black III production. In fact, director Barry Sonnenfeld’s third installment in the franchise has encountered so many problems since its production began last November that we were actually capable of putting together an article devoted entirely to discussing said issues. Ouch. True to form, MIB has now taken another hit as purported co-star Alec Baldwin has left the production altogether. In a recent interview with Vulture, Baldwin made quick work of his exit saying, “I’m not doing that. I’m out of it; the schedule didn’t work out.”

As for the role Baldwin leaves behind, the actor was slated to play the head of the “MIB” in 1969 during the portions of the film in which Will Smith travels to the era in an attempt to save the young Agent K (Josh Brolin). There is currently no word on who will replace Baldwin in the role. In spite of all of its hardships, the film is scheduled to resume production on March 28th and is still looking at a May 25, 2012 release. The release date for the Oscar-worthy, underdog tale that documents all of Men in Black III’s obstacles on the road to release has yet to be announced. That said, I hear its production is going splendidly.
