Johnny Talks to Vanity Fair About The Tourist and Angelina's "Perverse" Sense of Humor

Johnny Depp was interviewed by his friend and collaborator Patti Smith for the January 2011 issue of Vanity Fair, which is on newsstands Dec. 7. The actor spent much of the Summer and Fall filming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but is now busy promoting his holiday release, The Tourist. He opened up to Patti about starring alongside Angelina Jolie in the thriller, which is one of Buzz's most anticipated movies of the season, revealing that they avoided chatting in public during the shoot to avoid any misconceptions about their relationship. Johnny and Angelina play characters who strike up an unlikely romance in the steamy film, and he says that playing buttoned-down mathematician Frank was intriguing because of how oddly normal the character actually is. On working with Angelina: “Meeting her and getting to know her was a real pleasant surprise. You don’t know what she might be like—if she has any sense of humor at all. I was so pleased to find that she is incredibly normal, and has a wonderfully kind of dark, perverse sense of humor...I’ve had the honor and the pleasure and gift of having known Elizabeth Taylor for a number of years. You know, you sit down with her, she slings hash, she sits there and cusses like a sailor, and she’s hilarious. Angie’s got the same kind of thing, you know, the same approach.”

On his character in The Tourist: "I was always fascinated by people who are considered completely normal, because I find them the weirdest of all.”

On becoming an actor: “Going into acting was an odd deviation from a particular road that I was on in my late teens, early 20s, because I had no desire, no interest, really, in it at all. I was a musician and I was a guitarist, and that’s what I wanted to do.”

On the role he still wants to play: "[Marlon Brando said,] Why don’t you just take a year and go and study Shakespeare, or go and study Hamlet. Go and work on Hamlet and play that part. Play that part before you’re too old…. So what he was trying to tell me was: play that f*cking part, man. Play that part before you’re too long in the tooth. Play it. And I would like to. I’d really, really like to.”

Reese Gets Glamorous to Chat About More Kids, Feeling Sexy, and Finding Jim

Reese Witherspoon dressed up for the cover of Glamour's January issue, which hits newsstands on Dec. 7. She's also front and center in a spread shot by photographer Ellen von Unwerth — check out even more of the gorgeous pictures. Reese has a lot on her plate between filming This Means War and her upcoming promotional tour for How Do You Know, but she took time to open up to the magazine about the importance of family, the possibility of having more kids, and her love for romantic comedies. She said:

• On feeling sexy: "I think as a woman, you get older, you feel more confident in your sexuality. You’re not as intimidated by it, not as embarrassed by it. Sexuality and femininity is an accumulation of age and wisdom and comfort in your own skin. I feel better—so much better now than I ever did in my twenties. I am calmer; I know who I am. And as a result, I feel much sexier. There’s always going to be somebody younger or sexier. That’s why I like to say, and it’s become my famous line, ‘Funny doesn’t sag.'"
• On having more kids: "I would love to have more kids. Kids are the best part of my day. I don’t wake up to make movies. I wake up to hang out with my family."
• On making romantic comedies: "I love romantic comedies. I watch them all the time. I love all my fellow female romantic comedy queens, like Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner and Katie Heigl. I also think that the questions romantic comedies ask about men and women are universal."
• On dating a non-celebrity vs. a celebrity: "I have a little perspective on this. I wouldn’t say it’s easier. Every relationship has its own dynamic. And I don’t want to disparage any of the other relationships that I’ve had that were meaningful and wonderful. But what I’m finding out is that it’s very comfortable to be with somebody who understands my career, but doesn’t do what I do. He’s a great guy. He’s wonderful."
• On her blessed life: "I’m really, really lucky. I’ve got a lot of love in my life. I’ve got great friends. I have two great kids whom I make pancakes for every Sunday. I’m very blessed."
