Aaron Johnson and Mia Wasikowska Join Glenn Close and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers for ALBERT NOBBS

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 6th, 2010

Once upon a time, Orlando Bloom and Amanda Seyfried were set to star opposite Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs.  Not so anymore, though Close is still in place as producer, co-writer, and star in the role that won her an Obie back in 1982.  ScreenTerrier [via The Playlist] reports Seyfried’s role has been filled by Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland); Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) will replace Bloom as it preps for shooting in the coming weeks.  I’d give the slight edge to Seyfried over Wasikowska here, but Johnson is a major upgrade from Mr. Bloom.  Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) also stars.
Rodrigo Garcia (In Treatment) directs from a script by Close and John Banville, based on the George Moore short story about a woman (Close) who has been disguising herself as a man to escape poverty.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis.

19th century Ireland: a woman with no husband or family and without work would face a bleak life of poverty and loneliness. Albert, a shy butler who keeps himself to himself, has been hiding a deep secret for years – ‘he’ is a woman who has had to dress and behave as a man all her life in order to escape this fate. When handsome painter Hubert Page arrives at the hotel, Albert is inspired to try and escape the false life she has created for herself. She gathers her nerves to court beautiful, saucy young maid Helen in whom she thinks she’s found a soul-mate – but Helen’s eye is on a new arrival: handsome, bad-boy Joe, the new handy-man! As Albert dares to hope that she might one day live a normal life, we catch a glimpse of a free-spirited woman who is caught in the wrong time… This humorous but ultimately poignant ensemble story about life ‘below-stairs’ is nothing less than Gosford Park meets Boys Don’t Cry.

New Trailer for VANISHING ON 7TH STREET

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: December 6th, 2010

Magnet has released a new trailer for Vanishing on 7th Street, with enough footage not found in the first to be worth a look.  Directed by Brad Anderson (The Machinist) follows a group of strangers who survived when “an unexplained blackout plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, and by the time the sun rises, only a few people remain.”  Hayden Christensen (Takers), John Leguizamo (Gamer),  Thandie Newton (2012), and newcomer Jacob Latimore star.
Hit the jump for the trailer and official synopsis.

Despite the generally unnerving on-screen presence of Christensen, the trailer almost had me.  I’m a sucker for post-apocalyptic imagery, and the production design team has made the most of their budget.
Yet the shadows which chase and engulf our protagonists look kinda… lame.  Could totally be saved by a strong story.  We’ll see.
Vanishing on 7th Street is available as video on demand starting January 7, 2011, with a limited theatrical release slated for February 18th.  Click to Yahoo! Movies for HD.
An unexplained blackout plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, and by the time the sun rises, only a few people remain — surrounded by heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. A small handful of strangers that have survived the night each find their way to a rundown bar, whose gasoline-powered generator and stockpile of food and drink make it the last refuge in a deserted city. With daylight beginning to disappear completely and whispering shadows surrounding the survivors, they soon discover that the enemy is the darkness itself, and only the few remaining light sources can keep them safe. As time begins to run out for them, darkness closes in and they must face the ultimate terror.http://www.collider.com/2010/12/06/vanishing-on-7th-street-trailer-hayden-christensen/
